Debugging The Myth and Getting Aware of Colorectal Cancer

11:27:00 PM
In history, myths does have its origin, but in medicine, myths are beliefs that need to be debug because if not life may lead to terminal illnesses or even death. We, Filipinos have so many beliefs that more often we tend to take it lightly and not considers any preventive measures. Sometimes we shrug our shoulders and says 'it was nothing'. Yes, that was nothing for now but eventually will grow something that is irreversible.

One of today's feared life taker is cancer and one of the fast growing in number is the persons with what you call of a terminal cancer, Colon Cancer. In a more scientific term it is called the colorectal disease or commonly known as Colon Cancer. Silent as they are with the symptoms type of cancer is also a silent killer.

A few days ago, the Philippine Society of Enterologist with their sponsor Westmont, a division of Unilab, conducted a media briefing regarding their advocacy, which is the Colon Cancer Awareness and also the upcoming Cancer Awareness month.
The main thrust of the organization is to make a noise regarding Colon Cancer, the myths people believed about it, and the initiative in calling the attention of the government to have every Filipino citizens above 50 years old to be screened. According to DR. FREDERICK DY, Gastronintestinal oncologist and a leading expert in endoscopy, "Colorectal cancer has certainly become a real concern in the Philippines. The growing number of incidence and mortality worldwide have put the disease as the third most common type of cancer for both men and women, after lung and breast cancers."

According to the recent statistics of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) foremost cancer research and statistics project, GLOBOCAN, there were 4,901 deaths of the 8,553 incidences of colorectal cancer in the Philippines in 2012, which means that more than half of those diagnosed have died from the disease.

It is unfortunate that the level of awareness about colorectal cancer here in the Philippines is much lower than that for other types of cancer such as breasts or lungs. Doctors also find difficulty in urging patients to adopt lifestyle changes for the prevention if colorectal cancer. The earlier the better it is prevented.
“Colorectal cancer us influenced by both modifiable and non-modifiable risks, one of which is lifestyle and diet. But as a lifestyle illness, it is also asymptomatic (displaying no symptoms) is the initial stage,” Dr. Dy says.

As what Dr. Dy mentioned, modifiable risk factors are those that can be changed like obesity, cigarette smoking, alcoholic beverage intake, physical inactivity and increased consumption of red meat. A diet rich in animal fat generally increases risk, while eating food rich in fiber and calcium may possible reduce the risk.

Aside from the modifiable risk factors there are also the non-modifiable risks factor in colorectal cancer. Some of these non-modifiable are the gender, age, and family history. According to Dr. Dy these are factors that cannot be altered. These factors are inherent in a person like the family history of the disease and gender.

With the increase in incidences, colon cancer is now among the deadliest, and recent data show that it's not slowing down either.

"Colon cancer doesn't begin as cancer immediately; it starts with pre-malignant precursors called polyps. If left attended, these polyps grow over time, eventually becoming cancer. For young people, the risk is low, but they are not immune to it. We have young adults developing colorectal cancer. The occurrence is generally uncommon, but if someone has symptoms referable to colorectal cancer, no matter the age, they need to see their doctor or better if they consult a gastroenterologist. Most of colorectal cancer occurs sporadically but some have a strong genetic background. There are also genetic syndromes that also develop a significant number of polyps at a younger age," said Dy.
As to what is always said "prevention is the best medicine" and for the Philippine Society of Gastroenterology, they are aiming to inform every Filipino about colon cancer and encourages everyone to have themselves be screened, most especially and a must are those people ages 50 and up. It is preventable all is needed is the cooperation of every Filipino and of course through the help of the government and every individual.

So, for the Colon Cancer Awareness month which will happen this March, let us all be aware and be responsive to the call.

Taco Bell's Twist of Burrito, the Cheesy Core Burrito,

9:14:00 PM

The thought of having cheese in your burrito is awesome and that's what I thought when Taco Bell made their announcement about their latest food offering for their loyal foodie fan. An inventive twist created for the Burrito itself, the Cheesy Core Burrito.

If you think it's not good well, your lost, because this Cheesy Core Burrito really made a craving out of me. I'm not a huge fan of Burrito but I like eating it but of course having your usual burrito would definitely give you a food fatigue. And perhaps that's what Taco Bell thought about it and made a twist of their Burrito, the Cheesy Core Burrito.

Taco Bell might want to claim that their Burrito or their food establishment is very first store to offer and come up with this kind of twist with the Burrito. It is the firs burrito with a melted cheese center. It features a "core" of red nacho strips sauce wrapped in a flour tortilla surrounded by seasoned beef, Mexican rice, cool sour cream, and red sauce wrapped into a burrito. Imagine a mini cheese burrito stuffed inside a classic Taco Bell Burrito.

If you're convinced and satisfied of what I've said about the Cheesy Core Burrito then you might want to satisfy yourself more by having the Cheesy Core Burrito that is available at a price of Php139 ala carte and P179 for the set meal that comes with nachos and soda.

So, any mommies out there who's brave enough to take on the offering of Shakeys.

Coffee Party at Bo's Coffee During the Opening at Ayala Terraces Fairview

7:53:00 AM

An all Filipino coffee in a cup with a rich flavor and an enticing aroma, would definitely make me more relaxed. That's what I usually feel whenever I get to taste a real coffee. It was like a soothing taste that calms every nerves of my body. Not really sure if it's a good thing but I enjoy having great coffee, I'm a coffee lover but not a frequent drinker of coffee.

The different kinds of coffee is not new to me as I have been tasting and filling my nerves with rich aromas of these coffee beans. Bo's Coffee, an all-Filipino cafe enticed me even more with coffee during the opening of one of their branches located in Ayala Terraces in Fairview, Quezon City. The branch did a coffee party where attendees learn more of the types of coffees they are serving. Another thing is that participants get to experience the step by step procedure of brewing a rich, strong and flavorful coffee. I was one of the lucky attendees to experience it personally. The measurement, the right way of placing the grind coffee on the filter, and the proper way of pouring hot water into the coffee.
To strengthen the vision of spreading the good all-Filipino coffee to more clientele, Bo's Coffee opens 2 more branches in Metro Manila. One in SM Light Mall just near the Boni MRT Station, which is by the way the 90th outlet of the cafe and the other one is the one I was able to attend to in Ayala Terraces in Fairview, Quezon.

"There has been a growing demand in the metropolis to open more cafes so we selected these two prominent locations to address those needs," expressed by Mr. Coochy Mamaclay, Bo's Coffee VP for Brand & Marketing.

"We want everyone to feel the Bo's Coffee experience as they look for a nook and haven where students, friends, and families can study, bond, and share stories in a cozy and feel-at-home atmosphere over their favorite local brew," Mamaclay noted.

According to Ms. Mamaclay, Bo's Coffee workers attest their loyalty to the brand by taking an oath or panata to give the best to their csutomers. They are all called partners and they make sure that once orders are made it is served with a smile. "This is how we Filipinos take care of our guests," according to her.

The brand, Bo's Coffee, does not only stays with their all-Filipino coffee but also to some other things that helps in uplifting the works of other Filipinos. Some good examples are the chandeliers conceived by world-famous designer Kenneth Cobonpue and the chairs upholstered by ANTHILL Fabric Gallery.

Ms. Mamaclay explained, "In our vow to share the great Philippines coffee experience, every cup you sip also nurtures and cultivates social enterprises and builds communities, a commitment and advocacy we take seriously."

True to their tagline "Your Homegrown Brew", Bo's Coffee sourced their coffee beans locally from the areas of the highland farmers in Sagada and Benguet in Mountain Provicne, the Mount Kitanglad in Bukidnon, Mount Apo in Davao, and Mount Matutum in Tupi, South Cotabato.

Bo's Coffee official shared that "We serve coffee-to-cup freshness using only quality coffee beans from these local and sustainable sources."

Bo's Coffee's expansion plan is off to a red-hot start and is showing no signs of stopping. She disclosed that there are plans to roll out more branches and that Bo's Coffee was eyeing to have its 100th store in the 1st quarter of 2017 and that the brand's 362 first international outlet will open its doors within the year.
