Puerto Princesa: Beyond Beauty, into Athletic Excitement

8:45:00 PM

Puerto Princesa City, situated in the renowned Last Frontier of the Philippines, is topping the charts as a preferred destination for travelers, adventure enthusiasts, and nature lovers. The city's growing popularity is further boosted by hosting numerous sports tournaments, establishing itself as the recognized "Sports Capital of the Philippines."

Relentless. Exceptional. Indomitable. That's the spirit of Puerto Princesa, showcasing top-notch sports events including marine activities such as kite-boarding, wakeboarding, water skiing, banana-boat rides, tube riding, and hookah diving. The city is also a consistent host of the "Motocross Masters of Asia," featuring the Philippine leg of the FIM UAM Asian Motocross Series, Puerto Princesa International Motocross Grand Prix, Thai Riders, Pinoy Riders, Mountain Bike XC Challenge, and Boxing Eve "Hamon sa Puerto Princesa."

Puerto Princesa understands that sports and tourism are interrelated and complementary driving forces for the promotion and sustainable economic development of the city as an attractive tourism destination. It continues to boost its tourist arrivals by hosting and organizing more sporting events.

Gathering strength, determination, and a sea of endurance: Participants unite for the Ironman 70.3 Puerto Princesa 2023, capturing the essence of the long-distance triathlon journey in a single frame.

The city is blessed with natural resources and landscape to hold excellent mass-participation events such as triathlons and marathons, mountain bike and motor cross races, beach volleyball, and other water sports competitions.

“Talagang naka-project na ang Puerto Princesa sa sports tourism. Syempre yung hinahabol nating sports tourism yung mayroong international flavor,” City Mayor Lucilo Rodriguez Bayron said. Mega sports events such as Ironman and dragon boat festival can be catalysts for tourism development in Puerto Princesa if successfully leveraged in terms of destination branding, infrastructure development and other economic, cultural, and social benefits.

IRONMAN 70.3 PUERTO PRINCESA-ASIA TRI-CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

The second year of the IRONMAN 70.3 Puerto Princesa - Asia Tri-Club Championship, the ultimate test of endurance, strategy, and strength, capped off the Philippines' triathlon season. It was successfully held in Puerto Princesa on November 12.

A total of 523 foreign and Filipino triathletes from 38 countries participated in the amazing race. Satar Salem (4 hours, 22 minutes, and 25 seconds) and Leyann Ramo (5 hours, 2 minutes, and 56 seconds) both of Tri SND Barracuda dominated the top overall age group for the male and female categories, respectively.

China’s Junyu Cao finished the race in second place at 4:23.13 while Dutch Olympian Eric Van der Linden rounded off the top three finishers in the male category with 4:24.41. Ramo’s teammate Lyllian Grace Banzon trailed her at second place in 5:29.23 while American Catherine Wood completed the top three in the women’s side with the time of 5:36.26.

Tri SND Barracuda of Lanao del Norte netted the country’s top triathlon squad a whopping P500,000 purse put up by Puerto Princesa Mayor Lucilo Bayron.

The competition was divided into three segments: a 1.9-kilometer swim in Puerto Princesa Baywalk, a 90-kilometer bike ride through the city’s southern part, and a 21.1-kilometer run. The grueling course covered 113.0 kilometers, or 70.3 miles.

City Mayor Lucilo Rodriguez Bayron expressed his gratitude to the organizers, participants, and spectators for their support for Ironman 70.3. He also showed confidence that the competition will be successfully held again in the city next year as more local and foreign delegates are expected to attend.

THIRD LEGENDS RIDE 2023

The city understands that one of the most popular ways to experience a destination is through a sports event. It allows sports enthusiasts as well as tourists to better engage with local people, nature, and culture.

That happened when about 200 local and visiting riders participated in the 3rd Legends Ride 2023 held on November 18 in Puerto Princesa. The sports activity is part of the successful Subaraw Biodiversity Festival 2023.

From the starting point at Caltex Junction 3, the riders of different groups from all over the country, led by the Tamilok Motorcycle Group, marched together. The other participants were the Big Bikes, Palawan Street Monkeys, Himass Motorcycle Group/Hijos, United Sports Bike of Palawan (USP) and others on small bikes.

The route took the legend riders to Puerto Princesa landmarks such as the Montible Junction, Napsan at the Villa Francesca Resort in Simpocan, the Tala Beach Resort and straight to the Tennis Covered Court of the Ramon V. Mitra Sports Complex, inside Balayong People’s Park.

“Thank you very much for bringing the Legends Ride to our city. Because you enjoyed it, you will definitely come back here. You are always welcome here in Puerto Princesa City,” said City Mayor Bayron at the fellowship dinner at the Tennis Covered Court as he congratulated the organizers, riders, guests, and sponsors for the successful holding of the Legends Ride 2023.

Jun Diagono, president of the National Federation of Motorcycles said they are very happy with the success of Legends Ride 2023. He set two goals in going to Puerto Princesa City: first was to unite all the big bikes clubs in the Philippines; and second, to invite various groups to the National Motorcycle Convention on April 26-27, 2024, at the Subic Bay Convention Center.

Diagono also convinced Puerto Princesa City bike legend Edward Butch Chase to hold the national convention in the city next year. He also promised to bring LMFI’s 54-member bike clubs to participate in the upcoming event, including the Federation of Bikes Club based in Mindanao.

At the awarding, the youngest rider was Blu Andre Rausa, 19 years old; and the oldest rider was Bob Del Rosario, 74 years old. The Most Organized Group is Evo Riders Club Philippines and Biggest Group is Palawan Street Monkeys. A Special Citation was given to Philip Dulatas as the overall chair of the event, and a Certificate of Greatest Appreciation for the support of William Genato, Naj Abdul, and Elroy John “Clink: Hagedorn. The Living legend award was given to Edward Butch Chase.

The other participating groups were the Legends Ride are Binuang, GBC, Bandits, Baghawi Rider Club, Bundakan Motorcycle Club and Widows Son Masonic Riders Association. 2ND INTERNATIONAL DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL 2023

The 2nd International Dragon Boat Festival 2023, held on November 19, attracted teams from Chinese Taipei, Manila, Cebu and Siargao which competed in the just-concluded 200-meter event. From this series of international activities, it has been proven that it is possible to raise the level of programs and activities in Puerto Princesa.

Strength, strategy, paddling speed, and teamwork were the advantages of the 'paddlers' who won the championship in the final competition. They showed the audience a breath-taking fight. Everyone wants to get away and no one wants to be left behind. So even on a sunny day, the applause and screams from the audience were loud and clear.

In the Women’s Category, the Alliance of Masters from Manila won the championship; 1st runner-up is the Philippine Titans – Manila; Fire Dragons A is 2nd runner-up – Manila; and Rampage is 3rd runner-up – Manila.

In the Men’s Category, Mr. Canoe from Chinese Taipei won the championship. Followed by Philippine Titans in second place, Dagun Pilipinas A in third place and Alliance of Masters in fourth place. The battle in the Mixed Category was also uneventful where the Siargao Dragons from Surigao del Norte proved that they deserve to be champions. The Alliance of Masters placed second; Hongkong China Canoe took third place followed by SAG-1 from Manila in fourth place.

In the Masters Category where those aged 40 and above were given the opportunity to show their skills, the Sugbo Mighty Dragons from Cebu became champions; followed in second place by the Alliance of Masters; Rampage in third place; and Blue Phoenix from Manila in fourth place.

Praise and admiration were showered on the leadership of the Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragon Boat Federation, or PCKDF, for taking the lead in organizing the international sports event in the city. Also heavily praised were the efforts shown by Mayor Lucilo Rodriguez Bayron in the tremendous success achieved by the municipal government for the competition.

“It was not easy but we know that we can win these big international events of ours. Of course with the support of department heads, city hall employees and the citizens who are there to support what we do. And even the organizations that trust us for big events. I am very grateful,” said City Mayor Bayron. “Please also expect that there are many more activities to look forward to that will definitely make the city recognized by the whole world not only for its eco-tourism wealth but also to become famous as the Sports Tourism Capital of the Philippines!”

A Cycle of Missed Moments

8:29:00 AM

It’s Monday, another start of the week. Though my body urges me to go back to bed my mind is telling me to wake up or I’ll be late for work. That’s what I feel every Monday whenever I get up and prepare for work. My morning starts around quarter or few minutes before 5 am, preparing myself and getting ready to go to work. I leave the house at around quarter to six.

Before moving out of the house I make sure to have a last peek of the kids. It is a little keepsake for the whole week that I’ll not be around with them. I would be missing them for some time and it breaks my heart leaving the kids and my wife. They are Daddyless for the week but I have to because it’s for them.

Kraft Eden Sarap Ng Pasko, Featuring Moms

5:45:00 PM

Mommies! What would be Christmas without them? Back when I was still young, I would always look at my Mom when she's cooking all the foods that I love to eat during Christmas. It was a great holiday that I've been looking forward every year. For us children they are our heroes, though they may be silent in what they are doing but still they are our saviour when its Christmas. They always save the day.

Running Man: Serious Run, Serious Fun

6:14:00 AM

A few weeks ago I've received an invite with the term Running Man which reminds me of the movie in the 80's entitled Running Man.  I got curious about it so I said yes to the event that I'll be there.  Unfortunately, I was a bit preoccupied in my work that I wasn't able to ask for a leave that day.  So, I requested one of my correspondent to be there in behalf of me.

So, she was there and met with the organizers and other bloggers.  Here's what it is all about and what it is all about.

Are you the Running Man?  Futuretainment Inc. redefines running at Venice Piazza Mckinley Hill, Bonifacio Global City Taguig City on November 17, 2012.  The event will be a sunset run that will start at 4PM and will continue until the evening.  Imagine traversing the rolling terrain of Mckinley Hill then hurdling a thrilling 6 stage obstacle course located in a dedicated lot within Mckinley Hill and designed by only the most exacting adventure enthusiasts. The Peak Attack is sure to give you a kick-start, quite literally, as you scale a mound of earth.  If it isn't a strong grip, leg strength should get you to the next challenge.

Next you have to lift yourself enough to grab the Monkey Bars, all the while keeping a firm hold to keep you from falling into muddy water.  This should take you back to your childhood days at the playground, though the feat is far more than child's play.  If you survive the Monkey Bars, you'll feel the thrill to the finish drawing closer at the Tunnel Crawl.  Conquer your claustrophobia and try to get ahead of the game.  The fun trail continues to the Wall Balance, where your balance will be put to the test as you'll find yourself negotiating a perilous edge, towards the Log Hurdles.  Simulating military boot camp, this obstacle should reveal how much time you've spent working on your legs at the gym, more than just biceps and chest.  Your agility and flexibility are also put to the test.  For the finale, the Net Crawl shall get you inching your way through, between an unwieldy net.

Runners will be grouped in waves to ensure that everyone will be able to comfortably experience the obstacles.  All participants who finish the race receive finisher's medals, but only the three fastest per wave will receive a gold medal.  Your race bib also entitles you to raffle prizes, with one lucky winner receiving the GRAND PRIZE of fifty thousand pesos (Php50,000.00) cash.  And as the event draws to its peak compliment it with the perfect music for that, with the console concoctions of Deuce Manila's Dj's Patty Tiu and Kat De Jesus and the mash up mixes of DJ Funk Avy.

Be 13 years old at least to register at www.futuretainmentinc.com, and www.runnersrunner.com, from now until November 10.  Secure a medical clearance from your doctor if you have serious medical condition, and submit a proof of parental consent if you are below 18 years old upon registration.  Then you can run until you've had the most fun of all on November 17, 2012.

For more information, log on to www.futuretainmentinc.com or visit Chris Sports SM North, SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia, Glorietta, Bonifacio high Street, and Festival Mall in Alabang for a registration form.  Like our Official FB Page www.facebook.com/runningmanthepartyrun, and get FREE, week to week training from our race director, Reijo del Prado.  Prepare to get fit, and have the best time yet!

5:07:00 AM

How many people do you think knows how to organize?  Actually, I'm not sure also but as far as I know most organized persons are the Moms.  No offense to the Dads but if I'm going to have a ratio of its 1:5.  One Dad out of Five Moms knows their stuff in the house.  Hopefully, especially now that the number of Stay At Home Dads are increasing.

TOFARM, An Award Giving Body for Pinoy Farmers

10:33:00 PM

Have you been to a Farm? Have you tried working in a Farm? Well, I'm sure lots of the present generation would scratch their heads and wonder what's a farm really looks like. Perhaps most of the present generation have seen farms in online games like Farmville, in which at least helped in informing the young ones of how Farms works. In my part, though born and raised in a city life, I get to experienced living in the province with my grandparents. Getting your hands and feet dirty when farming.

A few weeks ago my correspondent Jefferson Montas was able to attend and witness the media launch of TOFARM, it is the search for THE OUTSTANDING FARMERS of the Philippines. An award giving body that recognizes the hard work of Filipino farmers, men and women. Today's farmers or the modern farmers includes those in the agri-business, fisher folk, animal raisers, co-ops, farm communities, scientists, the academe, Gus, both urban and rural.

Junior Chamber International, Philippines and Universal Harvester, Inc. joins together in a dream of reviving the glory of Philippine agriculture by promoting farming as noble, lucrative profession, especially for the youth. This is because the agricultural sector plays the most crucial part in our survival as a people.

According to them, most of today's generation are no longer interested in tilling their fathers land and they prefer to pursue city jobs or become doctors, lawyers and engineers. Just like our National hero Jose Rizal said, not all can be doctors. Some will have to stay and cultivate the land. That is why the JCI and Universal Harvester's mission and vision is to make agriculture attractive for the next generations and for the entire country once again. And for a long term goal JCI and Universal Harvester, Inc. wants the Philippines to excel in farming, to be competitive on the world stage, to produce more so that we can feed our own and not to rely on importing crops and produce.

According to TOFARM Project Chairman Rommel Cunanan they will give out 11 awards for this year, six for the individual category and five for the group category. They'll be looking for the awardee from Farmer, Fisherfolk, Livestock, Agri-Entrepreneur, young Farmer, Agricultural Innovator and Urban/City Farmer for the individual category while on the group category will be from Agriculture Cooperative, Family Farmer, Local Government unit, Agricuture Initiatives and People's Choice.

The nomination period for Outstanding Farmer candidates begins August 1 and will end on September 30. Validation and Judging of nominees will take place in October and November, while the Awarding takes place in December.

Nominations may be submitted as hard copy or sent online to www.tofarm.org. Nomination forms may be downloaded from the website.

For more information, call the TOFARM Hotline 709-5001 to 54, fax 709-5006 or email info.tofarm@gmail.com.

Las Piñas Water Lily Festival on Its 7th Year

11:17:00 PM

Event covered by Angelyn Demo

It was a Thursday Morning and thank God it wasn't raining. The day was just right for the event and for travel but as usual traffic has always been there that caused me to be late on the designated meeting place! Then were off to the festival.

It was the celebration of Las Piñas' 7th Water Lily Festival. A celebration that has become more popular every year because of the livelihood products produced out of Water Hyacinth led by the Managing Director of the the Villar Foundation, Cynthia Villar.

We arrived early but it seems that the celebration started much earlier. The festivity commenced already and people are in tune with the celebration. People were pretty eager to watch the pageant perhaps because of their bet candidates and of course most of them are really lovely. Many people were present during the festivity and the only thing that is not pleasant was the weather. Though it was not raining it made a not so good condition because it made us look tired and haggard because of that hot weather. Perhaps the heat also flared up because of the number of guests and participants present.

I did try to ask people around to know what they think of the celebration and one of the person I've interviewed was a “kagawad” (councilor) of the barangay. She said that they were lucky that projects like these were conceptualized and helped the communities a lot. After the interview she even introduced me to their barangay captain.

The Water Lily Festival was conceptualized in order to promote the water hyacinth-based livelihood products made by the residents of Las Piñas living along the river. Before these water lilies or water hyacints were treated as aquatic pests that clog the river but now are useful raw materials. Products made from these water lilies are baskets, trays, slippers and other functional and ornamental items.

The festival highlighted for this year the Miss Las Piñas Water Lily which was a pre-pageant that was held on Tuesday (July 17) and last Thursday (July 19) the winner was crowned as this year's Miss Las Piñas Water Lily. Since the water lily is the highlighted ingredient of this festival, gowns made of this material were created by known designers like Noli Hans and as well the barangay residents themeselves. Other highlights of the 7th Water Lily Festival are the fluvial parade, street dancing, musical performances from Manunugtog Kawayan and other local bands, water lily weaving demonstrations and of course, a display exhibit of various handicrafts made out of water lilies.

According to Mrs. Villar “We can do it if we want to”, she also explained that there are lots of improvements needed for next year's festival like the cheering squads should train hard and they were also planning to conceptualize a river cruise in Las Piñas. Mrs. Villar also mentioned that “cleaning a river is really a challenge and the Las Piñas was praised for cleaning the river.” It is indeed one of the good efforts that the Villar Foundation have done to Las Piñas and to its communities.

This festivity is really good in promoting local tourism and locally made products. Other places should also strive to do the same for the future generation. Just what Mrs. Villar said “we can do it if we want to”.

Do you want to visit this festivity next year? If you're planning to, just visit the Villar Foundation website to see the details of their programs and activities.

Run For the Pasig River 2012 Invades QC

11:29:00 PM

Event covered by Jefferson Montas aka Justin.

The ABS-CBN Foundation's Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig (KBPIP) will be staging it s fourth advocacy run to clamor for cleaner rivers and esteros in Metro Manila via "09,30.2012 Run for the Pasig River" to be held in Quezon City on September 30, 2012.

After the success of last year's 11.20.2011 Run for the Pasig River, KBPIP is again urging groups and individuals to join the eco foot-race, which will help raise awareness and funds for the rehabilitation of the waterways of Quezon City-San Juan-Mandaluyong-Makati.

There will be three major event categories for the advocacy run: the 15K Ride & Roll with 4:00 a.m. gunstart; the 15K Commonwealth Challenge Run with 4:10 a.m. gunstart; and the 5K Morning Madness Run with 6:00 a.m. gunstart.  This time, there will be one starting line in the Quezon City Memorial Circle (QCMC) going straight to Commonwealth Avenue then back again to QCMC for the finish.

ABS-CBN Foundation's Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig has a track-record of organizing three successful runs for the Pasig River.  The 2009 Philippine International Marathon: A Run for the Pasig River, which had an estimated 23,000 participants, helped fund the inital phase of rehabilitation of Estero de Paco, a 2.9-kilometer tributary of the Pasig River in Manila.

The historic 10.10.10 Run for the Pasig River, meanwhile, broke the Guinness World Record for the "most participants in a racing event" with 116,087 runners.  It helped rehabilitate the second phase of the Estero de Paco clean-up.

Last year's 11.20.2011 Run for the Pasig River was the largest foot race joined by 86,547 runners, are currently being used to rehabilitate Estero de San Miguel and foru other esteros behind the Malacanang Palace.

KBPIP's seven-year rehabilitation program involves cleaning up all the esteros that drain into the Pasig River in order to thoroughly clean it.  To date, the project has resettled 1,216 families to Calauan, Laguna, introduced remediation technologies for water quality improvement, trained community volunteers for the River Warriors program and shared sound waste management practices with communities.

The 10.10.10 Run for the Pasig River won a Bronze anvil and an Award of Excellence at the 45th Anvil Awards given by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines, while the Estero de Paco clean-up earned an Award of Merit from the 2012 Philippine Quill Awards given by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Philippines.

Registration for the 09.30.2012 Run for the Pasig River opened on July 16, 2012 in SM North EDSA, 2nd Floor Cinema C Lobby (near IMAX Theater) and on July 20 in SM Megamall, Lower Ground Level, Building A (near The Event Center and Food Court) and SM Mall of Asia, Ground Floor Main Mall (near Music hall and SM Bowling Center).  Aside from the registration, there will also be merchandise available in the booths, in which part of the proceeds will also go to river rehab.  For updates on this advocacy run, visit www.runforthepasigriver.com.

Despite gaining the highest percentage of 'vote to evict' votes, the 17-year old "Cosplay Cutie of Iloilo" garnered a massive 33.92% of net votes and triumphed over Karen (11.91%), Roy (9.38%), and twins Jai and Joj (9.26%).

A few week ago PBB Teen Big Winners held a press conference meeting most of the media people.  One of my correspondent, Jefferson Montas aka Justin was thrilled enough to meet the Teen Big Winners.  According to him or her or whatever, they were really great, joyful, accommodating and lovely.  He event got some cool pictures with them.  Also, Myrtle commented on his hat.  He was wearing a character hat during that time.  I'm sure my son was looking for that hat.  Hahaha!

Anyway the successful Big Night was heavily discussed on micro-blogging site Twitter with hashtag #PBBTeensBigNight which topped the list of worldwide trending topics.

The "BFF at the Big Night" was held at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center looked back on the camaraderie formed and nurtured inside the walls of the famous house by gathering former housemates Kim Chiu, Gerald Anderson, Melai Cantiveros, Jason Francisco, Beauty Gonzalez, Yayo Aguila, Ryan Bang, and many more.  It was also marked with appearances from Kapamilya celebrities Iza Calzado, Kathryn Bernardo, Matteo Guidicelli, JM de Guzman, Jessy Mendiola, and "PBB Unlimited" Big Winner Slater Young.

"PBB Teen Edition 4," the fourth teen edition of the local version of the international TV franchise from Endemol, made 15 housemates live inside the PBB house to spend the summer of their lives carrying out tasks from Big Brother for 13 weeks.  The program also took on hosting duties from former PBB housemate and actor John Prats, who headlined the program with Toni Gonzaga, Bianca Gonzales, and Robi Domingo.
