Zia Quizon ‘Favorite New Artist’ at MYX Music Awards 2012

7:12:00 PM

Round ups for the local music industry!

In her few months in showbiz, Zia has already proven that she is more than just the daughter of King of Comedy Dolphy and Divine Diva Zsa Zsa Padilla’s daughter. She has recently been named as 2012 MYX Music Awards’ Favorite New Artist.

Zia’s music, which fused pop, soul, jazz, and retro R&B, has been widely-accepted by the public yielding the hit song Ako Na Lang. She recently launched her new single Dear Lonely, lifted from her debut album Zia. The album has recently been awarded a Gold Record Award.

Simple Girl is also available for download at www.mymusicstore.com.ph. It also boasts of having more than 160,000 songs making it the country’s biggest music download site, where one can get tracks as low as P20.

“I’m proud to say that all the songs in the album were arranged to my style of singing. My producers made sure I was comfortable with singing the songs in the album,” Zia says. “I am happy that people appreciate my music.”

It was no surprise then when Zia chose to cover her mom Zsa Zsa Padilla’s ‘80s hit ‘Mambobola’. “We were throwing some ideas around and I think I actually suggested the song myself. I felt that it would be very nice to have one of my mom’s songs on the album as a kind of tribute to her for all of the things she has done for me.”

Zia also covered Sheena Easton’s ‘So Much In Love’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘Smile’, dedicated to her comedian father Dolphy. “Aside from my mom, I would say that my dad’s taste in music really shaped mine. He influenced me to appreciate the classics—from standards to classical to world music and even oldies.”

MyMusicStore, created to support OPM artists and to cater to Pinoy music lovers, is the ultimate one-stop shop for those who can’t wait to have their music downloads right here, right now!

SABRINA's “MOVES LIKE JAGGER”, “I LOVE ACOUSTIC 4” NOW PLATINUM IN INDONESIA

11:23:00 PM

Asia’s acoustic sweetheart Sabrina releases her follow-up single from her highly successful “I Love Acoustic 4” album—her version of the hit “Moves Like Jagger”.

This Maroon5 & Christina Aguilera single which became a staple song of 2011 will be infused with Sabrina’s own sweet acoustic flavor that listeners will love. Its music video directed by Daphne Oliveros recently premiered at MYX and entered the Top 20 of Pinoy MYX Countdown after only 1 week of airplay.

“I’m so excited about this second single as it is such a fun track,” Sabrina said. “Also watch the music video of the song as it will be different from my previous videos”.

And to add to the good news--- “I Love Acoustic 4” is now certified PLATINUM in Indonesia (the album turned GOLD November of 2011). This makes Sabrina one of the few Filipino singers to have multi-platinum success in Indonesia which other singers have tried but failed to penetrate. “I Love Acoustic 4” was also released in Thailand and soon in Singapore and Malaysia. Her previous albums “I Love Acoustic”, “I Love Acoustic Too and “I Love Acoustic 3” were multi-platinum success in those countries- the only Filipino female singer to break in successfully in the South East Asian market. Her huge following abroad is now translating locally as the album is still in retail charts where it debuted at #1 at Astroplus and #9 at Odyssey upon its first week of release. Because of her success abroad, she became a recipient of the “International Achievement Award at the recent Awit Awards where she also took home the I-Gateway Mobile Philippines, Inc.'s Most Downloaded Artist for 2010.

The album also includes the tracks “Price Tag,” “Who Says”, “Edge of Glory”, “On The Floor”, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”, “California King Bed”, “Hold It Against Me”, “Rolling In The Deep”, “The Lazy Song”, “Back To December”, “That Should Be Me”, “Marry Me”, “Rocketeer”, “Just The Way You Are” featuring Indonesian singer Calvin Jeremy and “Lucky” featuring multi-platinum crooner Richard Poon.

Asia’s Acoustic Sweetheart Sabrina returns to Indonesia this March 24 for a show at Supermal Karawaci in the capital city of Jakarta. You may also catch Sabrina here on March 31 (Saturday), 5pm at SM Molino. Those who will buy her album “I Love Acoustic 4” will get to have their CDs autographed by Sabrina herself after the show.

“I Love Acosutic 4” by Sabrina is now out in CDs under MCA Music (Universal Music Philippines) and available for download at mymusicstore.com.ph. To download Sabrina’s single “Moves Like Jagger” text JGR and send to 2728 for Smart and Talk N Text subscribers, text KL343 and send to 2332 for Globe/ TM or text 5493161 and send to 2300 for Sun Cellular subscribers. What Well-Known Composers Say About PhilPop

8:59:00 PM

Excited with the upcoming PhilPop Music Festival? Well, if you are, these people are much more excited than you are. Here are what they say about this upcoming PhilPop Music Festival.

“The Philippine Popular Music Festival should offer what we all have been missing – a worthy venue to showcase the best and the brightest in OPM,” - Ely Buendia, songwriter/ musician

“Sobrang nakaka-excite ‘tong Philippine Popular Music Festival! More than a performer, a musician or anything else, I consider myself as a songwriter, and this makes it exciting for me…an event which will showcase the talent of my fellow Filipino songwriters. I honestly believe that this is what the music industry needs now: more original material. We have a deep bench of talented singers and musicians and we have to have a bigger pool of fresh new original songs to give them something new to sing. Revivals are okay but we need to come up with new songs to add to our piggy bank of classic Pinoy pop songs…and this Philippine Popular Music Festival will surely help our local music scene. Mabuhay ang original Pinoy music!,” - Chito Miranda, songwriter/performing and recording artist, Parokya ni Edgar

“It’s more fun in the Philippines! The 1st Philippine Popular Music Festival is an awaited competition that will draw the creativity of Filipino composers, old and new. This competition is a welcome endeavor to propel original Pilipino music to be known and recognized globally,” - Noel Cabangon, songwriter

“I'm so happy that a prestigious songwriting competition such as the Philippine Popular Music Festival is being launched! We in the OPM are supporting this show 100%! Mabuhay ang musikang Pilipino!,” - Ogie Alcasid, songwriter/multi-media artist/president of OPM

“Finally a song writing festival where both young and old songwriters can share their creation. This will truly inspire everyone and give a new, fresh and dynamic meaning to OPM,” - Louie Ocampo, songwriter/producer/music director

“I'm glad we're bringing back the SONG FESTIVAL. We need to encourage the young songwriters to write original music to express our own sentiments, tell our own story and re-awaken our natural gift for MELODY,” - Jose Mari Chan, songwriter/businessman

“A free people must sing and dance to its own songs. Let our soul be expressed through its original musical expressions. Mabuhay ang Philippine Popular Music Festival!,” - Jim Paredes, songwriter/artist/teacher

So music lovers better watch out for the Philippine Popular Music Festival!  Coming very soon!

PhilPop Music Festival, A Venue For Songwriters

5:46:00 PM

I forgot when was the last time that there was a music festival showcasing the imaginative notes and flowery words of a songwriter.  I may not be a good songwriter but I definitely write quite a bit, it just need more practice and more learning.  Perhaps I do that before the deadline of the submission.

Anyway, so much with reminiscing.  If you know what I am writing about, well, good because the competition for songwriter will be starting very soon.  Amateur and professional Filipino composer will have a chance to prove that Original Pilipino Music are still alive and kicking all it needs is venue like this, the Philippine Popular Music Festival.

To know more about the Philippine Popular Music Festival or PhilPop read the details of the press release below...

There are competitions for aspiring singers, dancers, actors, models, bands, chefs, even children wanting to be chefs but what about for songwriters?

With a local music scene widely dominated by imported music, the Filipino songwriter has become a stranger in his own land.

With this in mind, prominent names from various industries have come together to spearhead the creation of the Philippine Popular Music Festival.

PhilPOP is a songwriting competition open to all amateur and professional Filipino composers. By March 1, 2012, interested composers can start submitting their entries online at PhilPOP.com.ph. The deadline of submission is on May 10, 2012. Song entries must be in MP3 format and can be in any popular music genre or a fusion of known genres, in any form or structure. Each entry must not exceed four minutes. Contestants can submit a maximum of two songs, either as a sole composer or as a collaborator. Song lyrics may be in Filipino, English, any Filipino dialect or a combination thereof.

There will be three levels of screenings and during the semi-finals, the judges will choose the top 14 finalists. The final performance and competition night will be held on July 14, 2012 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC). The grand prize winner will receive P1 million in cash and a trophy. The second and third runners up will each receive a trophy and P500,000 and P250,000 in cash respectively. All non-winning finalists will receive P50,000. A People’s Choice award will also be given to the entry with the most number of online and text votes. The winner will receive P200,000 and a trophy.

The competition hopes to provide a channel through which Filipino songwriters can create new songs and discover new expressions or genres in popular music. The organizers of PhilPOP also hope to start spark renewed enthusiasm and pride in Filipino music by starting a brand new collection of freshly produced Original Pilipino Music (OPM).

“Filipinos, in general, are musically gifted,” music maestro and PhilPOP executive director Ryan Cayabyab said. “We are well-known the world over simply because of our immense talent. But we are not just a country of talented singers, dancers and actors. With PhilPOP, I also want to shine the spotlight on our world-class composers and songwriters,” he added. The renowned musician also noted that this songwriting event is not a “revival” of another popular songwriting competition in the past decade.

Maynilad president and chief executive Ricky Vargas, who is also the event’s organizing committee chairman, further noted the significance of PhilPOP. “It’s high time we celebrate the artistry of the Filipino songwriter. What better way to do that than by giving them an avenue to showcase home grown talent and shine on a stage of their own.”

Meanwhile, business icon and PhilPOP chairman, Manny Pangilinan, also shared his motivation for lending support to the competition. “There are two reasons why I'm back in the Philippines after living in Hong Kong for so many years. I miss our religion and our music. You hear God’s voice in music,” he said.

The Philippine Popular Music Festival is jointly presented by Maynilad, Meralco, PLDT, Smart Communications, Sun Cellular, PICC, TV5, DDB Philippines and official press launch food provider, Via Mare.

Dream With SomedayDream's Bloggers Night

1:52:00 PM
If dreaming is what this guy did before he became famous then I think it's not too late for us to dream big and reach that dream someday.

To be honest, I don't have any idea who was the man behind Somedaydream.  No clue at all about his real name.  Then came the Selecta Cornetto disc commercial which makes me familiar with the portion of the song.  I thought it was sung by a foreign artist and realized later when Orange Magazine TV posted an invitation for the 1st Bloggers Meet-Up  with the man behind Somedaydream.  That's the time that I was able to look and check who this singer was.  His real name was Rez Toledo.

He was born under the zodiac sign of Sagittarius in 1990 and was born in Metro Manila.  Spent his high school days in Ateneo De Manila University and I'm not really much sure if his band before were created in this school.  Yup!  He did have a band before and they did gigs around the Metro but the best of all is that he is also an internet sensation.

Having one of his song used in a commercial did flared up his career and his presence in the music industry.  The idea of his song being played manually like a vinyl record did burst out the curiosity of most TV viewers.  After a few months of airing the commercial it became the song of the town.  Even kids do know that commercial and the song.

As the commercial fired up in 2011, so did  his career and his song "Hey Daydreamer" that really made a hit.  He was awarded by Yahoo Philippines as Breakthrough Artist and Icon of the Year, got the #1 spot of both Pinoy MYX countdown and MYX Hit Charts year-ender edition, RX 93.1's "Song of the Year" and also made him "OPM Artist of the Year" plus he performed at the prestigious 2011 MYX Music Awards.  A full blast of blessings for him and also a prestige for his mentor and manager ex-Hale vocalist Champ Lui Pio.

Recently, Somedaydream's self-titled debut album was released under MCA Music Inc. and it features two of his hit singles "Hey Daydreamer" and "Delivery Boys" plus four more tracks like "Prelude", "Do-do With You", "Sing This Song" and "Break".  The album also includes an acoustic version of "Hey Daydreamer".

If you want a fresh new type of sound, grab a copy of Somedaydream and feel the beat of this electropop music.

Somedaydream’s 1st Bloggers’ Meetup is brought to you by MCA Music, Mecca Music and Pinoy Magazine in cooperation with official online partner Orange Magazine TV and Blue Onion Bar and Restaurant. Special thanks to Bose, Terranova, Keds and Selecta Cornetto.

9:46:00 PM

Yes you've heard it right people our very own Asia's Acoustic Sweetheart has already on the top 2 of the TOP 5 BEST SELLING ALBUMS CHART IN ASIA for the week #4 January 27, 2012.  It was astonishing that of our OPM Artist was able to top the chart.

Her latest Album "I Love Acoustic 4" has indeed hypnotized lots of listeners.  I think  more Asians are preferring the sweet lovely voice of a Filipino Artist.  Congratulation to SABRINA!

How can the back crawl?

A Blogger's Night with Sabrina

8:21:00 PM

It was one of those nights where I enjoyed having time with some of the OPM Artists.  One, it's because it gives me a little rejuvenation after a whole day work at the office and two, hey it's our OPM artist getting to know them more, the better.  Since one of our advocacy is to support OPM Artist, this is really a good event to enjoy their music and know more of their craft.

Last Monday, for this specific night, I get a chance to be part of a pool of bloggers who get a chance for a greet and meet of one of the bubbliest female acoustic artist that I know, her screen name is SABRINA.   Beautiful, sweet and the most part "Kalog".  It's very rare to meet an artist like her.  Just what I have wrote on one of my tweets that "It was really great knowing a singer like you who praises God above all."

The evening was great for a much more intimate and interactive chat with Sabrina plus the place at Red Box: Rock, Dine, Roll was much comfy and private, so we get more chance to hear about Sabrina's background and her lovely voice.

For those who doesn't know who Sabrina was, well here's a little background about her.  Her real name is Roli Alexandra Ngo Orial or known as Xanxan.  Born in 1989 under the zodiac sign Capricorn.  Hey here's something that I'm sure everybody would normally ask why SABRINA when her name is Roli Alexandra, well according to her it was given by the previous management and since her voice were inline with bossa nova songs.  A latin feel for the voice and for the name.

Here are a portion of the video during the chat with Sabrina.

Well for the benefit other readers who doesn't know Sabrina, she's an acoustic sweetheart in Asia and Sabrina releases her follow-up single from her highly successful "I Love Acoustic 4" album her own version of the hit "Moves Like Jagger".

Another news is that last November the "I Love Acoustic 4" turned GOLD in Indonesia and this month, it is certified PLATINUM in that country.  This makes Sabrina one of the few Filipino singers to have multi-platinum success in Indonesia which other singers have tried but failed to penetrate.  The "I Love Acoustic 4" was also released in Thailand and soon in Singapore and Malaysia.  Her previous albums "I Love Acoustic", "I Love Acoustic Too" and "I Love Acoustic 3" were multi-platinum success in those countries.  She's the only Filipino female singer to break in successfully in the South East Asian market,  Her huge following abroad is now translating locally as the album is still in retail charts where it debuted at #1 at Astroplus and #9 at Odyssey upon its first week of release.  Because of her success abroad, she became a recipient of the "International Achievement Award at the recent Awit Awards where she also took home the I-Geteway Mobile Philippines, Inc.'s Most Downloaded Artist for 2010.

The album also includes the tracks "Price Tag", "Who Says", "Edge of Glory", "On the Floor", "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)", "California King Bed", "Hold It Against Me", "Rolling In The Deep", "The Lazy Song", "Back To December", "that should Be Me", "Marry Me", "Rockeeter", "Just The Way You Are" featuring Indonesian singer Calvin Jeremy and "Lucky" featuring multi-platinum crooner Richard Poon.

Catch Sabrina as she serenades SM Pasig on February 17 (Friday) at 4 pm.  those who will buy her album "I Love Acoustic 4" will get to have their CDs autographed by Sabrina herself after the show.

SUNUGAN: Rap Battle

10:57:00 PM
During my teenage life I was really into raps. Thanks to Francis M. for the introduction of Philippine rap and later on with Andrew E. whom both I look onto with regards to that craft. I remember also that I did try to do some rap lyrics during my free time before. I think rap doesn't look into what age you are but how you love the style and the craft. So for now, since I really like different kind of music, I will take the chance of hearing a rap battle. Here's what it is all about...

“Whoever loses resigns from rap – for good.” That spells the inevitable doom of whoever loses in the rap battle aptly called SUNUGAN: Unfinished Business. This Filipino rap battle is the much-awaited conclusion to previous rap battles between Abra and Batas, Shehyee and Melvin the Devil, and many other masters of rap. Too many loose ends… but wait until January 28, 2011, when the SUNUGAN: Unfinished Business shall commence.

Mortal enemies in rap battle finally get to the conclusion of their rap drama as they put their careers on the line. The losing party shall never rap again! Loonie versus Zaito, Apekz versus Harlem, Shehyee versus Melvin the Devil, and Abra versus Batas. For this historic event, Guijo Street in Makati shall be closed off. SUNUGAN: Unfinished Business will be the event to go to this January as rap masters engage in a word fight that millions of rap fans from all over the world will want to witness. Live streaming shall be available via PinoyTuner. And if you want a preview of what’s to come, watch Shehyee and Abra as they engage in a battle rap with comedian-host Stanley Chi on Dig Radio’s Suplado Show. That’s this Monday, January 23, 2012, 9 to 11 p.m.

Also, get the chance to ask Shehyee and Abra any question by calling the Suplado Show during the preview rap battle. Winning caller wins gift certificates from UniSilver Time. Sunugan: Unfinished Business starts at 8 p.m. at Guijo Street, in front of Dig Radio Studios (7615 Guijo Street, San Antonio Village, Makati) and Saguijo. Come and witness the war. It has been brewing ever since – and we all hold our breaths for the finale.

You may also text JOIN (space) SUNUGAN and send to 2948 to get updates on Sunugan: Unfinished Business.
