A few days right before the finals night, in most online and offline news tells that Maxine Medina will be having an interpreter on standby. So it is.
On the day of the Miss Universe, when all other ladies where eliminated and is down to just 6 of the lovely ladies namely Miss France, Miss Kenya, Miss Colombia, Miss Philippines, Miss Thailand, and Miss Haiti, Steve Harvey announced that Miss Colombia, Miss France, Miss Thailand and Miss Haiti will be using an interpreter. Pinoy crowds made a sound reaction, not sure if it is a reaction of support or not for Maxine Medina not using an interpreter. Nonetheless it was announced and Miss Philippines is the first to answer a question.
Hey and ho what is an interpreter doing there and interpreted the question for Maxine? Yes it was a standby but aren't there any signal or coordination whether for Maxine to use the interpreter or not? What made it even worse is that the question is interpreted wrongly. This is the question as Steve Harvey read.
What is the most significant change you’ve seen in the world in the last 10 years?and this is what the interpreter made out of the question.
Ano ang pinakamakabuluhang naganap na pangyayaring nakita mo sa mundo sa loob ng sampung taon?and this is what Miss Philippines, Maxine Medina's answer to the question.
In the last 10 years of being here in the world is that I saw all of the people bringing in one event like this in Miss Universe... and is something big to us that we are one, as one nation we are all together. Thank you. Maraming salamat po.The interpretation clearly blew it all up and made the Philippines lose it's chance of making at least to the top 3. Perhaps the question and the interpretation made Maxine lose her trail of thought and confidence in answering the question.
In my opinion the interpretation should at least be like this
Ano ang pinakamahalagang pagbabago ang nakita mo sa mundo sa loob ng sampung taon? Not sure whether the interpreter is more nervous than Maxine that he made a wrong interpretation of the question. CHANGE has never been interpreted or translated as PANGYAYARI but more of PAGBABAGO. Like what the current president would always say on his speech "Change is coming".
So, in my own opinion if the question was interpreted correctly we might have ended up on the top 3 of 65th Miss Universe Beauty Pageant. But then again everything happens for a reason and Maxine Medina did her best. Congratulations Miss Philippines, Maxine Medina!
