JM Ibarra and Fyang Smith React to Their Acting Debut in iWant's “Ghosting”

7/29/2025 07:26:00 PM

For first-time actors JM Ibarra and Fyang Smith, stepping into their roles in the iWant Originals series Ghosting felt like stepping into another world—literally and emotionally.

Fresh off their Pinoy Big Brother Gen 11 stint, the two now find themselves as the lead pair in a romantic supernatural series that blurs the lines between life, death, and love. But for JM and Fyang, the real challenge wasn’t just acting as a restless spirit or a heartbroken girl trying to heal—it was watching themselves not as JM and Fyang, but as Wilberto and Jaja.

“It’s different when you're just being yourself on reality TV,” JM shared with a nervous laugh during a behind-the-scenes interview. “But when I watched myself in the series for the first time, ang dami kong napansin. Am I moving my hands too much? Am I saying this right? Nakakahiya.”

Fyang echoed the feeling. “There were moments I had to look away from the screen! Sobrang conscious ako. Pero at the same time, I was proud. We did it. We really acted.”

This raw honesty adds another layer of charm to Ghosting, a series that doesn't just tell a story about moving on from love and life—it’s also about stepping into the unknown, much like JM and Fyang are doing with their acting careers.

More Than Just One Kind of Ghosting

The series takes its name from two meanings of the word "ghosting"—the popular millennial term for being suddenly ignored or left without closure, and the literal sense of encountering ghosts.

In the story, Fyang’s character, Jaja, escapes to her lola’s quiet provincial home after being ghosted by a guy she cared about. But instead of finding peace, she meets Wilberto (played by JM), a charming—but very much dead—local. What follows is a strange, slow-burn romance between the living and the spirit world.

But if you ask the cast, some scenes hit a little too close to reality.

A Fresh Start in a New Light

While the supernatural elements hook the audience in, it's the emotional honesty that grounds Ghosting. Directed by romcom veteran Ted Boborol (Vince & Kath & James, Finally Found Someone), the series delicately weaves grief, love, and letting go into eight binge-worthy episodes.

And at the center of it all are JM and Fyang, navigating unfamiliar territory both as actors and as onscreen lovers—awkward, uncertain, and completely relatable.

They may be haunted by nerves now, but their chemistry is anything but lifeless.

Catch the Premiere

Ghosting streams exclusively on the newly revamped iWant starting Saturday, July 19 at 8PM (PHT). Catch JM and Fyang's hauntingly awkward but heartfelt acting debut—and maybe discover that ghost stories, like love, aren’t always what they seem.

Unlock iWant Originals for just ₱35 per month. Stream the feels, the frights, and the firsts—only on iWant.

Hulk Hogan: The Hero Who Shaped a Childhood Generation

7/25/2025 07:52:00 AM

On July 24, 2025, wrestling legend Hulk Hogan passed away at age 71. But for millions of children who grew up in the 1980s and ’90s, he was far more than a champion, he was a hero who shaped their childhoods.

In his red-and-yellow outfit, handlebar mustache and bandanna, Hogan wasn’t just a wrestler. He was “The Hulkster,” a symbol of strength, optimism and good overcoming evil. Every time he raised his arms, flexed his muscles and prepared for that signature leg drop, kids across not only in America but the whole world, echoed his words: “Say your prayers, eat your vitamins, and believe in yourself”.

From Living Rooms to Backyards

Saturday mornings meant gathering in living rooms to watch “Rock ’n’ Wrestling” cartoons, and Sunday afternoons were for WWF Superstars. On playgrounds and backyards, kids reenacted the Hulkster’s dramatic poses and moves. One recalled trying the leg drop and leg-wrapped body slam, playing for hours until dinnertime drew them in.

Hogan gave children a hero they could emulate, someone who always seemed to win. “Hulkamania was more than entertainment; it was a promise of excitement and hope,” wrote a fan nostalgic for the era.

Nickelodeon’s Rare Moment

In 1991, Hogan appeared on Nickelodeon’s “Stories from Growing Up,” sharing his childhood struggles with weight and confidence. The special offered a glimpse behind the persona: a young boy learning to overcome challenges, to transform himself, just as he encouraged his young fans to do.

A Cultural Phenomenon

Hogan’s influence reached far beyond wrestling. He starred as Thunderlips in Rocky III and led an exercise tape and toy workout kit that inspired kids to get moving.

The Real American Hero

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described Hogan as “a superhero to a generation,” recalling how children in Tampa Bay saw him as a local icon, a man they felt they knew. Fans on social media echoed the sentiment: “To kids of the ’80s and ’90s, Hulk Hogan was a real‑life superhero”.

Enduring Echoes

Even years later, adults remember the surge of energy at the mention of Hogan’s catchphrases. One teacher shared a cherished memory of a 6-year-old who mimicked Hogan, “Ocelot859” on Reddit said the child’s “moxy and charisma” reminded them of the power of unfiltered childhood joy.

Today, those childhood memories remain vivid. Parents who once donned blond wigs and bandannas as childhood fans now share videos of their own children imitating his drills, proof that Hogan’s influence spans generations.

A Hero’s Lasting Legacy

Hogan’s passing leaves a void in the wrestling world. But for legions of fans, now parents themselves, his spirit endures in their homes and hearts. The memories he created were simple but profound: a strong hero, a clear message, and boundless childhood imagination.

In a world of changing heroes, Hulk Hogan remains timeless. His life reflected the power of storytelling and the magic of belief. And for many, that made growing up a little brighter, a bit stronger, and full of Hulkamania.

Why This Pinoy “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay” Feels Closer to Home

7/22/2025 07:08:00 PM

A Familiar Story, Told the Filipino Way: Inside the Local Adaptation of It’s Okay to Not Be Okay

When a beloved Korean drama lands in the Philippines, it comes with big expectations, and even bigger emotions. But in the Philippine adaptation of It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, viewers are getting more than just a retelling. They’re getting a story reshaped with Filipino soul, one that hits closer to home, both in heart and in truth.

Premiered yesterday, July 21 on Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live, A2Z, and TV5, that is while everyone is busy clearing water and carrying their belongings on higher grounds because of the flood. It was also early streamed on Netflix (July 18) and iWant (July 19). This highly anticipated teleserye is led by powerhouse stars Anne Curtis, Joshua Garcia, and Carlo Aquino. But beyond the casting, this reimagining stands out for one reason: it was built with the Filipino viewer in mind, every step of the way.

More Than a Remake: A Cultural Rebirth

Director Mae Cruz-Alviar and the creative team behind the show didn’t simply copy the Korean original, they transformed it. The story’s core remained: a guarded caregiver named Patpat (played by Joshua Garcia), his brother Matmat (Carlo Aquino), who lives with autism, and a successful yet emotionally scarred children’s book author Mia (Anne Curtis). Together, they wrestle with the ghosts of their past, uncovering old wounds and learning how to heal.

But this version unfolds with a uniquely Pinoy flavor. From the characters’ personalities to the backdrop of familiar landscapes, every detail was chosen to reflect how Filipinos experience pain, connection, and healing.

Instead of cherry blossoms and Korean winters, we see lush local scenery and sunlit countrysides. Filipino homes replace glass-walled hospitals. And yes, even the language shifts the tone. Where the Korean version may have leaned into restraint, the Filipino version isn’t afraid to show vulnerability, the kind that comes out during family dinners, late-night confessions, or quiet moments of prayer.

Scenes Rewritten for the Filipino Heart

Some of the Korean drama’s iconic scenes were respectfully adapted, or entirely reimagined, to match the Philippine setting and emotional rhythm. Supporting characters were restructured to reflect Filipino family dynamics, while scenes around mental health were softened and localized to better match the nation’s current awareness and openness.

“Kailangan namin i-handle na ‘wag biglaan ‘yung audience, na ‘wag sila ma-overwhelm,” said Director Cruz-Alviar. “So there is careful handling in telling the story but also staying true to the core of the show.”

Mental health isn’t an easy topic in any culture, but in the Philippines, where stigma and silence still surround conditions like depression and autism, telling this story required deep sensitivity and care. The production team partnered with advocates, therapists, and even visited special schools to portray the characters truthfully and respectfully.

A Personal Story for the Actors, Too

For Joshua Garcia, the role of Patpat hit close to home. “Nakaka-relate ako sa kanya kasi parehas kaming mapagmahal na kapatid at nangungulila sa nanay,” he shared. “Pati ‘yung pagka-burned out ng character ko, naramdaman ko rin.”

Meanwhile, Carlo Aquino underwent immersion sessions and intensive workshops to authentically portray Matmat, a person on the autism spectrum. The result? A performance that’s grounded, moving, and rooted in real-life experiences.

Anne Curtis, returning to teleseryes after years, gives life to Mia Hernandez, a role she describes as complex but ultimately healing. “It’s a healing story and it’s a beautiful journey of love,” Anne said. “Every Filipino… will be able to relate to the story of healing, pain, and love.”

An Advocacy, Not Just a Show

Beyond being a primetime teleserye, It’s Okay to Not Be Okay serves a bigger purpose. It’s an advocacy to understand and destigmatize depression, trauma, and the struggles of individuals with special needs.

At a time when many still whisper about mental health, this show speaks boldly, yet gently. It reminds viewers that it’s okay to feel broken. It’s okay to seek help. And it’s okay to not be okay.

And in true Filipino fashion, the story doesn’t end in sorrow, it ends in connection, healing, and hope.

Star-Studded Support Cast

The series also brings together a strong ensemble cast that includes Rio Locsin, Bobot Mortiz, Michael De Mesa, Maricel Laxa, Agot Isidro, Enchong Dee, Kaori Oinuma, Bodjie Pascua, Ana Abad Santos, Sharmaine Suarez, Xyriel Manabat, Louise Abuel, Francis Magundayao, Alora Sasam, Alyssa Muhlach, Bianca De Vera, Aljon Mendoza, and Mark Oblea.

With direction by Mae Cruz-Alviar and Raymond Ocampo, and creative leadership from Henry Quitain and Star Creatives’ Des M. De Guzman, the show is backed by a team that knows how to tell a powerful story with heart.

Watch and Feel the Difference

Catch It’s Okay to Not Be Okay starting July 21 on Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live, A2Z, and TV5 at 8:45 PM.

This isn’t just a remake, it’s a mirror for Filipino viewers, showing that healing is possible, love is powerful, and no one has to go through pain alone.

Can Fiction Shape Perception? ‘Sins of the Father’ and the Rise of Ascendra International

7/16/2025 07:14:00 AM

A Teleserye, a Scandal, and a Startup—What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Every now and then, a primetime drama mirrors real-life issues so closely that it doesn’t just entertain, it influences how people think and feel about certain industries. This is what ABS-CBN’s new teleserye Sins of the Father is beginning to stir up in the minds of Filipino audiences. The gripping series, which revolves around investment fraud, networking schemes, and the dark side of quick wealth, comes at an interesting time—just as a new network marketing company, Ascendra International, is beginning to take root in the Philippines.

With its official soft launch on June 30 in Mandaluyong City, Ascendra introduced itself as a new breed of network marketing firm: one that prioritizes financial empowerment, affordable non-life insurance, and ethical entrepreneurship. But as viewers binge through the dramatic unraveling of Sins of the Father, some can't help but draw parallels, or worse, suspicions, between the show’s fictional "Yayaman Tayo Investment Fund" and real-world networking ventures, especially those that are just starting out.

When Fiction Casts a Shadow on Fact

In Sins of the Father, Gerald Anderson plays Samuel Trinidad, a principled man who becomes the unwilling heir to a financial scam masterminded by his estranged father, portrayed by John Arcilla. The narrative is filled with common red flags of fraudulent schemes: charismatic leaders, too-good-to-be-true promises, and investors left with empty pockets.

This portrayal, while fictional, can unintentionally cast a long shadow on real businesses operating in similar industries. And that’s where Ascendra International finds itself at a crossroads.

A Fresh Start That Risks Being Misread

Ascendra is no stranger to the skepticism often associated with network marketing. Despite having respected and experienced leaders like CEO Engr. Jurgen Daniel Gonzales and CSO Joseph Lim, the company’s entry into the financial services sector arrives during a time when public trust is fragile.

The popularity of Sins of the Father could magnify that fragility. The teleserye may lead some to conflate Ascendra’s legitimate business model with the very scams the show warns against. After all, the buzzwords, “networking,” “financial freedom,” “passive income”, are shared across both narratives, albeit in very different contexts.

The Positive Side: Awareness and Opportunity

On the flip side, the spotlight from Sins of the Father might actually help Ascendra, if navigated carefully. The show is raising public awareness about red flags in financial dealings. This gives Ascendra a unique opportunity to differentiate itself from scam-laden models by highlighting its transparency, AI-driven tools, and insurance-focused platform.

Ascendra’s emphasis on low-cost, need-based insurance products and structured mentorship for its agents sets it apart from the hype-driven, recruit-heavy strategies portrayed in the show. Its business model leans toward product-first, not recruit-first, and that may resonate more deeply now that audiences are more critical and cautious.

The Risk: Guilt by Association

Still, perception is a powerful thing. Even the most well-intentioned startups can fall victim to public misjudgment, especially in a culture shaped by teleseryes, viral news, and internet speculation. With Sins of the Father painting a dramatic picture of financial betrayal under the guise of investment brilliance, Ascendra may find itself needing to clarify that it is not part of a get-rich-quick narrative.

The company must work twice as hard to emphasize the difference between ethical network marketing and deceptive financial schemes. Consistent messaging, transparent operations, and community engagement will be critical in building trust, especially among Filipinos who have seen friends or relatives fall victim to investment fraud in the past.

Why Reputation Management Matters More Than Ever

As the drama unfolds in the teleserye, complete with crypto wallets, sudden deaths, and billions in stolen funds, real companies like Ascendra are left to manage the aftermath in public perception. The responsibility lies in proving through action that not all networking companies are the same.

CEO Engr. Gonzales and his team must continue to educate the public about how Ascendra’s model works, what safeguards are in place, and how individuals can truly benefit from entrepreneurship grounded in real value, not promises.

Truth Over Drama

The timing may be challenging, but it also presents a chance for real change. If Ascendra can rise above the noise and prove itself through transparency, education, and results, it won’t just weather the teleserye storm, it may lead the industry toward a new era of ethical, purpose-driven network marketing.

If you’re curious about how network marketing can empower, not exploit, Filipinos, now’s the time to ask questions, seek transparency, and choose wisely. Visit Ascendra International’s official platforms, attend a training session, or talk to a partner to see the difference for yourself. In an age of information and imagination, it's truth, and not just television, that should guide your financial future.

Anne, Joshua, and Carlo Star in PH Remake of ‘It’s Okay to Not Be Okay’

7/15/2025 09:13:00 PM

Anne Curtis, Joshua Garcia, and Carlo Aquino headline the Philippine adaptation of the award-winning Korean drama It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, set to premiere July 21 on Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live, A2Z, and TV5. The series will stream in advance on Netflix starting July 18, and on iWant on July 19.

The local remake centers on Patpat (Garcia), a psychiatric ward caregiver who has spent most of his life looking after his older brother Matmat (Aquino), a man living with autism. Their routine is disrupted when they meet Mia (Curtis), a successful yet emotionally distant children’s book author known for her cold and eccentric demeanor.

As their lives intertwine, the three confront childhood trauma and emotional wounds, setting them on a path toward healing, self-discovery, and love.

Reimagined through a Filipino lens, the series aims to deliver a heartfelt exploration of mental health, emotional resilience, and the enduring strength of love.

“This is a universal story that everyone would be able to relate to. It’s a healing story and it’s a beautiful journey of love. And at the end of the day, every Filipino, whether it’s family or friends, will be able to relate to the story of healing, pain, and love,” said Anne, who plays the lead character Mia Hernandez, during the series’ mediacon last Monday (June 30).

Director Mae Cruz-Alviar also explained the show's approach in tackling mental health issues for Filipino audiences.

“Kailangan natin i-ayon sa pagtanggap ng audience sa ganitong talakayan tungkol sa mental health. Kasi hindi ganun kalaki ang awareness, so kailangan namin i-handle na ‘wag biglaan ‘yung audience, na ‘wag sila ma-overwhelm. So there is careful handling in telling the story but also staying true to the core of the show,” she shared.

Joshua related how he identified with his character in the series. “Nakaka-relate ako sa kanya kasi parehas kaming mapagmahal na kapatid at nangungulila sa nanay. Pati ‘yung pagka-burned out ng character ko, naramdaman ko rin.”

Meanwhile, Carlo, who plays the character of Matmat Gonzales, underwent immersions in special schools for persons with different levels of autism and several intensive workshops.

Completing the stellar cast are Rio Locsin, Bobot Mortiz, Michael De Mesa, Maricel Laxa, Agot Isidro, Enchong Dee, Kaori Oinuma, Bodjie Pascua, Ana Abad Santos, Sharmaine Suarez, Xyriel Manabat, Louise Abuel, Francis Magundayao, Alora Sasam, Alyssa Muhlach, Bianca De Vera, Aljon Mendoza, and Mark Oblea. “It’s Okay To Not Be Okay” is led by directors Mae Cruz-Alviar and Raymond Ocampo, creative producer Henry Quitain, and Star Creatives business unit head Des M. De Guzman.

Catch the most-awaited Philippine adaptation of “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay,” starting July 21 on Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live, A2Z, and TV5, weeknights at 8:45 PM. Watch it in advance on Netflix (July 18) and iWant (July 19).

Charo Santos and Dingdong Dantes Explore a Love Beyond Labels in “Only We Know”

6/07/2025 05:50:00 AM

Two people. One connection. A story only they understand.

That’s the central thread in the upcoming romantic drama Only We Know, starring screen veterans Charo Santos and Dingdong Dantes. The film opens in cinemas nationwide on June 11, bringing with it a quietly powerful tale that navigates the undefined spaces of human relationships.

Directed and written by Irene Emma Villamor, known for hits like Meet Me in St. Gallen and Sid and Aya, the film dissects labels, age gaps, and expectations. In Only We Know, the connection between Betty and Ryan doesn’t need to be named but only understood.

The title draws from a moment captured on the film’s poster: Betty and Ryan in a quiet, intense conversation, smiling as if sharing an inside joke. It’s that kind of bond, intimate, undefined, and deeply personal, that shapes the film’s core message.

Betty, played by Charo Santos, is a retired English teacher finding her rhythm in life after work. Ryan, portrayed by Dingdong Dantes, is a grieving engineer still haunted by the sudden loss of his wife. They meet by chance and, through shared moments and emotional healing, form a connection neither of them expected.

“It is a story about love, however you want to define it,” Santos shared during a press event. “It’s only Betty and Ryan who can define the beautiful kind of relationship that they have.”

The film steers clear of conventional romance formulas. While early thought and buzz focused on the “older woman, younger man” pairing, both the stars and the director insist the story digs deeper than stereotypes. “Ang interesting sa pelikula na ito ay babasagin nito ang kahulugan ng label,” Dantes said.

Villamor revealed the idea of the pairing surfaced seven years ago and took shape through multiple rewrites. The pandemic reshaped not just the storyline but the perspective from which the narrative is told. “The good thing was that the script was distilled to its very essence,” she said.

Shot in just 13 days, the film benefited from a chronological shooting schedule, allowing the chemistry between the leads to grow naturally. Despite being first-time co-stars, Santos and Dantes built a rapport on and off camera that director Villamor described as “10 out of 10.”

Their chemistry is visible in the trailer’s now-viral “great love” moment, where Betty wonders if we only ever get one true love in a lifetime. It's a question that lingers throughout the film, challenging both characters, and viewers, to think about how they define love and companionship.

In one scene, Betty muses on the beauty of routine, a detail that anchors the emotional realism of their relationship. They shop for groceries, drink together, and swap stories, are just some of the ordinary moments made extraordinary by the intimacy they build.

The supporting cast includes Shamaine Buencamino, Joel Saracho, Max Collins, Al Tantay, and Soliman Cruz, adding depth to Betty and Ryan’s world. One dinner scene sees Tantay’s character question Ryan’s intentions, a reminder that not everyone understands a bond that exists outside the lines.

In a world full of noise, Only We Know offers a soft yet resounding reminder: sometimes, the most meaningful relationships are the ones that don’t need explanation. Just understanding.

Catch Only We Know in cinemas starting June 11 and witness a love story that’s as thoughtful as it is tender, one that invites you to feel, not define.

The Living Tombstone to Perform Live in Manila

4/30/2025 09:58:00 PM

Electronic music duo The Living Tombstone is set to perform in Manila on July 8, 2025, at the New Frontier Theater. The show is presented by Ovation Productions, with Blast TV serving as the official media partner.

The act, composed of Yoav Landau and Sam Haft, has become a major name in online music and geek culture, thanks to its signature blend of electronic beats, catchy hooks, and genre-defying compositions. The group boasts more than 8 million subscribers on YouTube and over 70 billion streams across digital platforms.

The upcoming Manila concert follows a successful, sold-out North American tour in 2024.

Best known for their viral track Five Nights at Freddy’s, which reached No. 4 on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic chart and was featured in the credits of a Blumhouse and NBC Universal film adaptation, The Living Tombstone has built a loyal fanbase in the intersection of gaming, animation, and music.

Landau, who performs as the character “zero_one” onstage, founded the project over a decade ago while growing up in Israel, using music as a creative outlet and a way to connect with global fandom communities. Haft, a former TV and film writer, joined as vocalist and lyricist in 2017.

“They disproved the rule that you can’t just put your music out there and expect people to find it,” said the group’s manager, David Boxenbaum, co-founder of Octone Records. “They did exactly that—and millions did.”

Boxenbaum discovered the duo during his time at Avex, a Japanese entertainment company, where they collaborated on a TV project. He later encouraged the team to develop their debut album zero_one, which was met with critical and fan acclaim.

The duo has since expanded into gaming and animation projects, including the indie horror game In Sound Mind, which received positive reviews and a “overwhelmingly positive” rating on Steam. They also developed an animated series pilot, Rock N Rumble, and a companion video game, AudioClash: Battle of the Bands, currently in beta.

Now signed to 10K Projects, The Living Tombstone is preparing to release its sophomore album, Rust, in 2025, produced by CJ Baran (Panic! At the Disco, COIN, One OK Rock). Haft describes the new album as “an exploration of rebellion, dystopia, and the hope of building a better future.”

Tickets for the Manila concert are priced at PHP5,000 for VIP, PHP3,500 for Loge, and PHP2,500 for Balcony, excluding ticketing charges. Tickets will be available at ticketnet.com.ph, with artist presale starting April 30 and general sales beginning May 2.

Channeling the spirit of '70s punk bands like Ramones and The Clash, this track screams rebellion and the untamed life of youth with no rules.
2.Lonely
A melancholic yet danceable tune, reflecting fear of loneliness with emotionally rich lyrics over upbeat instrumentation.
3.Lancang
A sharp critique of opportunistic individuals with no backbone, served with bold riffs and biting lyrics.
4.Jeruji
A tale of false freedom and wild living, told through catchy rock n roll grooves and stylish flair.
5.Mana yang Katanya Merdeka
The EP's final track delivers a powerful social-political message about inequality and hypocrisy in a country that calls itself "free." A true punk anthem for the disillusioned.

Vic Sotto's Legal Battle with Director Darryl Yap

In January 2025, veteran actor Vic Sotto filed 19 counts of cyberlibel against filmmaker Darryl Yap. The controversy erupted after Yap released a teaser for his upcoming film, "The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma," which mentioned Sotto's name in connection with the late actress Pepsi Paloma. Sotto sought a writ of habeas data, leading the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court to order the removal of the teaser. Yap defended his work, stating that the film aimed to shed light on Paloma's story and was not intended to defame Sotto.

Rufa Mae Quinto's Arrest Warrant Over Fraud Charges

Comedian and actress Rufa Mae Quinto faced legal troubles when an arrest warrant was issued against her in December 2024 for violations of the Securities Regulation Code. The case also involved actress Neri Naig, who was arrested for fraud charges. Upon returning to the Philippines in January 2025, Quinto voluntarily surrendered to the National Bureau of Investigation and was released after posting bail.

Neri Naig's Fraud Case Dismissed

Neri Naig, who was arrested in November 2024 for 14 counts of fraud, saw her legal woes come to an end when the charges were dismissed on February 12, 2025. Naig had been detained in Pasay but was released on December 4, 2024, following a court order.

Baron Geisler's Public Drunkenness Incident

Actor Baron Geisler found himself in trouble once again when he was briefly detained and fined by police in Mandaue for public drunkenness on February 22, 2025. Geisler's history of controversies has kept him in the public eye, and this incident added to his list of legal entanglements. Wikipedia

‘The Kingdom’: A Metro Manila Film Festival Entry That Reimagines Philippine History

3/15/2025 11:05:00 PM

Here's my late review of the MMFF entry "The Kingdom"

What If History Took a Different Turn?

The Kingdom, one of this year’s standout entries in the Metro Manila Film Festival, dares to explore an intriguing question: What if the Philippines had never been colonized? The film presents an alternative reality where the country remained under the rule of pre-colonial leaders—Lakans and Rajahs—across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

With a powerhouse cast led by Vic Sotto, The Kingdom transports audiences into a visually striking world that reimagines the nation’s cultural roots. It breathes life into long-forgotten traditions—gestures like pagmamano (a sign of respect for elders), ritual handwashing before meals, the influential role of babaylan (spiritual leaders), and pagtutunggali, a form of combat used to settle disputes.

The Cast and their Roles

The movie is indeed a powerhouse cast, with each actor bringing their character to life in an interesting way. Here are the actors and their played characters. In addition is some of their quotable lines.

Vic Sotto - Lakan Makisig Nandula
"Sa tanda kong ito, hindi pa rin ako sanay sa bigat ng ginto sa'king ulo."

Piolo Pascual - Sulo/ Sulayman Tagum
"Mahirap makita ang katotohanan kapag nasa itaas."

Sue Ramirez - Dayang Lualhati Nandula
"Ngiti ang kabilang mukha ng pighati."

Sid Lucero - Magat Bagwis Nandula
"Magkabangga man tayo ng paniniwala, lahat tayo kung hindi man kapatid, anak."

Cristine Reyes - Dayang Matimyas Nandula
"Balang araw, ipapahamak ka ng bulag mong katapatan."

Nico Antonio - Tarek
Iza Calzado - Rosa
arthur acuña - Carpio
Ruby Ruiz - Silayan Hil-um
Zion cruz - Felipe

The Portrayal, the Picture, and What Stands Out

Throughout past Metro Manila Film Festivals, Vic Sotto has been a staple in the comedy genre, rarely venturing into other territories. This time, however, he takes on a different challenge. Despite aging gracefully, his performance remains top-notch, bringing depth to his character. Of course, true to form, he still manages to slip in a few well-timed comedic lines—effortlessly and naturally.

Sue Ramirez delivers a convincing portrayal of a Dayang betrothed to a foreign prince. Her performance, much like her previous roles, is simple, sincere, and engaging. She brings an air of authenticity that makes her character believable and relatable.

Piolo Pascual steps into the role of Sulo (Sulayman Tagum), a character shrouded in mystery and consumed by deep-seated rage. He embodies the role with intensity, reminiscent of his performances in Dekada ‘70 and other films that explore similar themes of anger and inner turmoil. His presence alone adds weight to the film’s narrative.

Cristine Reyes takes on a particularly challenging role, balancing two contrasting personalities—an angelic, dutiful daughter seeking her father’s approval and an ambitious, power-hungry woman who believes she is destined for the throne. Her performance keeps the audience intrigued, making us wonder what more she has to offer in future roles.

The supporting cast also deserves recognition, as each actor brings authenticity and energy to their respective characters, contributing to the film’s immersive atmosphere.

If there’s one aspect where the film could have done more, it’s in executing large-scale battle scenes. The grandeur of war sequences could have been better managed, with more dynamic camera angles and choreography to elevate the intensity of these moments.

A Deep Dive into Forgotten Traditions

One of the film’s greatest strengths is its dedication to reviving ancient Filipino customs. It reminds viewers how deeply our ancestors valued respect, honor, and community. Even the intricacies of royal succession and burial rites are carefully depicted, offering a glimpse of a heritage that could have evolved differently without foreign intervention.

However, while The Kingdom excels in storytelling and cultural representation, its fight choreography could have been more gripping. The action sequences, though pivotal to the plot, sometimes lack the intensity expected of epic battle scenes. Despite this, the film’s exploration of socio-political themes remains its strongest asset.

Themes That Resonate Today

Although set in a fictional pre-colonial era, The Kingdom subtly mirrors modern Philippine society. The film tackles themes that remain relevant today:

Power Struggles – The battle for control among leaders reflects the political rivalries that still shape the nation.
Sibling Rivalry – The tension between royal heirs vying for power is a reminder of family disputes over authority and inheritance.
Class Divide – The stark contrast between the elite and the common folk highlights social inequalities that persist to this day.
Corruption – Even in an imagined ancient society, the ruling class struggles with corruption, making the story feel all too familiar.
Tradition vs. Reform – The Lakan’s internal battle between upholding traditions and embracing change echoes today’s cultural debates.
Family and Honor – At its core, the film underscores the Filipino values of dignity, honor, and loyalty to family, even in the face of adversity.

A Reflection on What Could Have Been

The Kingdom challenges audiences to consider an alternate history. How would the Philippines have developed without colonization? Would its people have forged a stronger, uninterrupted cultural identity? The film doesn’t provide definitive answers, but it sparks meaningful reflection.

Thoughts About the Whole Film

The film may not be as perfect as most of us expects based on western big film companies, The Kingdom is a compelling blend of historical speculation and cultural appreciation. It doesn’t just entertain—it educates and inspires. By reimagining the country’s past, the film offers a fresh perspective on what it means to be Filipino.

For those eager to explore an alternate history of the Philippines, The Kingdom is a must-watch. It reignites pride in pre-colonial traditions and reminds us that our identity is shaped as much by what we have lost as by what we still hold dear.

Catch The Kingdom in theaters during the Metro Manila Film Festival, and immerse yourself in a world of what-ifs and what-could-have-beens.
