‘Shake, Rattle & Roll’ Brings Childhood Scares to a New Generation of Digital Games and Entertainment

10/29/2026 11:12:00 PM

A refrigerator that seems to hold more than leftovers, a creature waiting where no one expects it, and a train ride that turns into a nightmare: the scares of Shake, Rattle & Roll often began in familiar places. For Filipino children who grew up watching the anthology, the films could make a dark hallway feel dangerous, a bathroom seem suspicious and an ordinary commute feel less ordinary. The fear did not always end when the credits rolled; it followed audiences home, becoming part of the stories friends retold and the childhood memories they carried into adulthood.

More than four decades after the franchise began, its monsters are moving from the cinema screen to digital games. Regal Entertainment and BingoPlus are bringing Shake, Rattle & Roll into a new format, giving longtime fans a chance to revisit familiar fears while introducing the franchise to players who may know its creatures before they know the films.

The partnership brings together Regal’s history in Filipino filmmaking and BingoPlus’ digital entertainment platform through five games inspired by the franchise: Manananggal, Reyna Ahas, Triple Terror, LRT Monster and Aswang. Each title draws on the series’ mix of supernatural threats, urban unease and creatures rooted in Filipino imagination.

First released in 1984, Shake, Rattle & Roll established a lasting place in Filipino horror by bringing together three stories in one film and returning with new tales across successive installments. The anthology format meant the fear could take different forms: one episode might draw on the manananggal, a creature from local folklore; another could turn a familiar public place or everyday object into a source of dread; and another might explore the danger lurking within a family or community. The changing stories gave the franchise room to revisit old superstitions, reflect contemporary anxieties and introduce new generations to the country’s supernatural lore. For many viewers, its signature scare was not only the monster itself, but the thought that something unnatural could be hiding just beyond the edge of the familiar.

For Regal Entertainment, the move into gaming offers a way to introduce the franchise to a new generation while retaining the Filipino folklore, mythology and cultural references that distinguish its stories. The digital format changes how audiences encounter the monsters, but the source of the fascination remains familiar: the uneasy space between what people can explain and what they fear might exist in the dark.

“For more than four decades, Shake, Rattle & Roll has remained part of Philippine popular culture through stories that are distinctly Filipino,” said Roselle Monteverde, president of Regal Entertainment. “Our collaboration with DigiPlus opens a new chapter for the franchise, bringing its creative legacy into digital entertainment while preserving the storytelling and cultural identity that have made it enduring.”

The partnership pairs two local entertainment companies with different strengths: Regal brings decades of film storytelling, while DigiPlus extends those stories into digital play.

Regal contributes the characters and creative legacy audiences have known for years, while BingoPlus, under DigiPlus Interactive Corp., gives players a new way to encounter these horror properties. The shift from watching a story unfold to engaging with a game can bring a different kind of tension, even when the creatures themselves are already familiar.

Beyond the games, the partnership points to the staying power of stories shaped by Filipino culture. Folklore survives through retelling — around family tables, in neighborhood tales, in films and now through digital entertainment. Bringing these creatures into games may offer a new kind of scare, but it also keeps their names and the stories behind them in circulation. The fascination with the dark and the unnatural can change with each generation without losing its cultural roots.

“Our goal is to give our players premium entertainment. This partnership is also an example of how we work: We put our customers first. We listen to what our players enjoy, and we keep working to give them something fresh, engaging and made for them. The Shake, Rattle & Roll games are part of that commitment,” said DigiPlus Chairman Eusebio Tanco.

He added, “Our goal is to give our players premium entertainment. That means high-quality games, thoughtful design and worthwhile experiences. Partnering with Regal, one of the country's most respected names in storytelling, helps us deliver that.”

The five Shake, Rattle & Roll-inspired games are available on the BingoPlus app, with a phased rollout planned for ArenaPlus and GameZone, extending the collection to more of DigiPlus’ digital entertainment platforms. For viewers who remember the films, the games offer a digital return to the monsters that once made ordinary places feel frightening. For younger audiences, they can serve as an introduction to characters and beliefs that have long shaped Filipino horror storytelling. The format is different, but the cultural thread remains: these are stories about the things people fear, the folklore they inherit and the mysteries they continue to imagine. The monsters may be familiar, but the ways Filipinos encounter them continue to evolve. And even in a new digital form, the old thrill remains — a reminder that some childhood fears never quite leave us.
