Movie Review: Bwakaw, A Drama-Comedy Film

Bwakaw is a critically-acclaimed first independent film by Jun Robles Lana which have recently won awards in the 8th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. Some of the awards are the Best Actor award which was bagged by actor-director Eddie Garcia, Audience Choice, and Netpac Awards in the Director’s Showcase Category.

Bwakaw is a drama-comedy film which tells a story about growing old and everyone’s fear of growing old alone. It is about an old man named Rene who just lately realized that he is gay. He thinks that it is too late for him to feel love and all that is to look forward to is death. Rene has a dog named Bwakaw, who follows him wherever he goes. Bwakaw is Filipino slang for greedy, at first I thought the movie was something harsh because of the title but it was used as the name of the dog.

The film touched different issues in the society, old-age, animal rights, and gender sensitivity. It has depicted these issues in a very simple manner that viewers wouldn’t notice it at all perhaps except for the gender sensitivity. Not really sure if it was intentionally created or just accidentally materialized in the story.

My rating for this film is a thumb up for good story and acting. What I’m worry about is will it be viewed by teenagers and yuppies? Let us see.

Aside from Garcia and Princess, the dog, Bwakaw also stars Rez Cortez, Gardo Versoza, Bibeth Orteza, Soxie Topacio, Allan Paule, Joey Paras, Beverly Salviejo, Soliman Cruz, Bibeth Orteza, Luz Valdez, Jonathan Neri, May-I Fabros, and Ms. Armida Siguion-Reyna. “Bwakaw” hits cinemas nationwide on September 5, 2012.
