This is actually my second year to cover the Yoshinoya Gyudon Eating Contest. Last year was my first which I was able to witness the winner Douglas James Candano, not actually just eat but gobbled up more than 6 bowls of gyudon. Also one of the bloggers, Florencio Jusay, Jr. won in the media category. It was indeed a day of gyudon. Imagine the look of these contestants eyeing to finish more bowls of gyudon than the other and also imagine the number of gyudon that Yoshinoya have to prepare. Well, it’s more than imagine but it happened last year.
So this year, for the last several weeks of getting qualifiers from different branches of Yoshinoya, they finally completed the list of individuals eager and hungry to take on the challenge and finish a number of gyudon. As Yoshinoya’s Gyudon Eating Contest marks its 4th year, many hungry Filipinos are in to test their mettle to gastronomic challenges. If Coney Island in New York, USA has the world-famous Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, then the Philippines definitely has Yoshinoya. And just like in the previous editions, the Yoshinoya Gyudon Eating Contest promises to be nothing short of excitement.During the selection period several customers dared to consume the most number of gyudon in 5 minutes and after several weeks each branches was able to get the names of the individuals that head on to the Grand Finals. All these weekly winners are then called to face off each other and out-eat one other and be crowned as this year’s champion at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati City.
The final match at the Glorietta Activity Center only proves who eats more than anyone else. As safety precautions and procedures all finalists undergone medical check up to ensure their health conditions are okay. All finalists will compete by eating the most number of bowls in 15 minutes. The Top Three (3) Finalists with the most number of bowls consumed and the least weight of food left after 15 minutes will be declared winners of the Yoshinoya Gyudon Eating Contest 2014.
This year’s eating contest catches most of the media’s attention as one of the participants who joined is a she. Yes, among the 46 participants there’s a rose among these torns. Not a typical chubby looking girl but she sure deceives everyone on her look. She’s an average looking girl but a big eater.
For the media category, the bloggers’ representative, Ruel Umali, who’s all hyped up to win this year’s crown unfortunately lost a little less than half of a bowl. But then again it was a good food fight.
After the 15 minute time mark and after checking their consumed gyudons three winner stands out and are declared winner.
Of course non-winners received consolation prizes worth Php2,000 worth of Yoshinoya gift certificates.
It was indeed a tremendous and awesome day of fun and excitement as the whole activity center made every one sniff the smell of the Gyudon, which is a great Japanese meal composed of steaming white rice topped with sumptuous beef and onion stirred in a mild sweet sauce.
