Muslim Community Furious Over FPJ's Batang Quiapo Episode?

9:36:00 PM

The new TV series, FPJ's Batang Quiapo, received a warm reception from fans and viewers after its first episode aired. The show features talented actress Miles Ocampo and is produced by popular actor Coco Martin. However, the show recently faced criticism from the Muslim community due to an episode that portrayed the community in a negative light.

Fernando Poe Jr., or FPJ, is a beloved figure in the Muslim community, not just for his films, but also for the respect and recognition he gave to the community in his work. It was disappointing that the Batang Quiapo series offended the Muslim community, even though the episode in question was fictional. The scene depicted a Muslim character tolerating theft, which many viewers found offensive and inaccurate.

Many people expressed their disappointment with the episode and criticized the Batang Quiapo team for stereotyping Muslims. In response to the criticism, Coco Martin personally went to the office of Senator Robin Padilla, a prominent Muslim figure in government, to apologize for any offense caused by the episode. He admitted that he didn't know much about Muslim culture and assured the senator that he and the team would work to learn and understand more about it.

Here's some part of the public statement made by Senator Robin Padilla.

[(translation) "I want to inform everyone that Director Coco Martin personally came to my office to explain the controversial part of his teleserye. I personally heard, saw, and felt the sincere apology of my fellow actor and director to all those who were hurt by the said portrayal. My dear brothers and sisters, I guarantee the good intentions of Mr. Coco Martin and I am sure that he has no ill intentions towards anyone. He admits that he lacks knowledge of Islam, so instead of criticizing his shortcomings, I appeal to you to help us build a better understanding together.

The members of Batang Quiapo, in cooperation, promise to be more careful and sensitive in depicting sectors, especially when the image of culture, tradition, and religion is at stake.

The Muslim community in Ka-Maynilaan (Manila), particularly in Quiapo, is truly rich and colorful, which runs through thousands of pages of our history."]

This incident is an opportunity to learn more about the Muslim culture and stop judging people based on appearances or stereotypes. Coco Martin and the Batang Quiapo team have committed to doing better in the future and promoting more accurate and respectful representations of the Muslim community.

“FPJ’s Batang Quiapo,” which is inspired by the original story of Regal Films, on weeknights at 8 PM on Kapamilya Channel, A2Z, TV5, iWantTFC, and Kapamilya Online Live on ABS-CBN Entertainment’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.
