LG OLED Evo TVs Achieve Eco-Friendly Certification for Fourth Year in a Row

LG Electronics (LG) is once again in the spotlight for its unwavering dedication to sustainability and eco-friendly practices. The latest LG 2024 OLED evo TVs have been recognized with Reducing CO2 and Measured CO2 certifications from the Carbon Trust and Environmentally Evaluated Mark from Société Générale de Surveillance SA (SGS), marking the fourth consecutive year of recognition for LG's environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives. Additionally, LG’s newest OLED TVs have earned their second successive Recycled Content certification, underscoring the company's commitment to environmental responsibility.

The Carbon Trust, an organization working towards a future of zero carbon emissions, evaluates the environmental impact of products throughout their entire life cycle. SGS certification focuses on resource efficiency and the presence of hazardous substances, while Intertek measures the percentage of recycled materials used. These certifications emphasize responsible consumption practices across industries and contribute to global sustainability efforts.

One notable aspect of LG OLED TVs is their self-lit nature, which stands out in sustainability evaluations. Unlike LCD TVs, LG OLED TVs do not require a backlight, leading to a simpler structure and fewer components. For example, LG’s 65-inch OLED evo, constructed with ultra-light composite fiber, uses only 40 percent of the plastic typically found in an LCD TV of the same size and weighs 20 percent less.

Considering the expected sales of LG OLED TVs this year, the total plastic usage from 2022 to 2024 is projected to be 45,000 tons lower than that of LCD TVs sold during the same period. This reduction will result in a decrease in carbon emissions of approximately 234,000 tons annually, equivalent to the carbon dioxide absorbed by a 30-year-old pine forest. To put it in perspective, this reduction is about one-third of the area of Seoul or roughly 31,000 soccer fields.

Approximately 20% of the plastic used in manufacturing all LG TVs, including OLED TVs, consists of recycled plastics, amounting to around 4,000 tons of recycled waste plastic annually.

In addition to its environmental endeavors, LG has received accolades from both domestic and international organizations for its ESG initiatives. In 2023, LG was listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) for the twelfth consecutive year, ranking in the top ten percent of the largest 2,500 global companies based on long-term economic, environmental, social, and governance practices. Notably, LG is the sole South Korean company in the Leisure Equipment & Products and Consumer Electronics industry category to achieve this recognition.

Furthermore, LG has consistently received the highest 'Comprehensive A grade' from the ESG Evaluation and Rating Announcement of Korea ESG Standards Institute (KCGS) for three years, and it earned its fourth consecutive 'A' rating from the Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) ESG Rating last year.

Baik Seon-pill, leader of LG Home Entertainment Company’s Product Planning Division, emphasized, “LG OLED TVs not only lead the market as the ultimate choice for premium viewing experiences but also set the bar for ESG standards. LG remains dedicated to ongoing efforts to create a better planet for all.”
