Ten Filipino Actors Who Captivated Audiences as Vampires

10/25/2025 11:23:00 PM

Okay, so it’s Halloween! When it comes to costumes, one classic always stands out — the vampire.

No one really knows why, but vampires have a strange way of captivating people everywhere. Their charm and mystery never seem to fade, making them one of the most recognizable figures during the spooky season.

In Philippine cinema, vampires have taken on many forms — some terrifying, others tragic, but always fascinating. Filipino actors, known for their emotional depth and powerful screen presence, have brought these creatures to life with unforgettable performances.

Here’s a look at some of the Filipino actors who sank their teeth into vampire roles that continue to haunt, thrill, and entertain audiences, along with the stories and films that made them legends of the night.

1. Richard Gutierrez in La Vendetta and La Luna Sangre

Richard Gutierrez took on a dark transformation in La Vendetta, a horror-thriller series that aired on GMA Network in 2007. Portraying the elusive and brooding vampire character, he captures the essence of revenge with a deadly allure, driven by a bloodline curse that drags him into the underworld. This haunting storyline revolves around family secrets and brutal betrayals, with Gutierrez’s intense performance adding to the chills. Directed by Gil Tejada Jr., the series achieved success with its mix of horror and suspense, leaving viewers captivated by Gutierrez’s spine-chilling portrayal.

Also, in the 2017 ABS-CBN fantasy series La Luna Sangre, Richard Gutierrez played Sandrino Villalobo, also known as Supremo, the powerful and ruthless leader of the vampires. As the main antagonist, his character sought to dominate both humans and supernatural beings, driven by vengeance and a twisted sense of destiny. Gutierrez’s portrayal of Sandrino was both menacing and magnetic — a villain with depth, pain, and humanity buried beneath his monstrous nature. His commanding presence, cold demeanor, and emotional intensity made him one of Philippine television’s most memorable vampire characters, embodying the eternal struggle between power, revenge, and redemption.

2. Angel Locsin – La Luna Sangrea

That’s absolutely correct — Angel Locsin played the mysterious and powerful Jacintha Magsaysay in La Luna Sangre (ABS-CBN, 2017–2018), a continuation of the Lobo and Imortal saga. Angel Locsin’s portrayal of Jacintha captured both mystery and strength. Dressed in striking red gowns and speaking with calm authority, she carried an aura of elegance and danger reminiscent of a vampire queen. Her presence added depth to the story’s supernatural politics, symbolizing balance and destiny in the war between vampires and werewolves.

3. Eddie Garcia in Batuta Ni Drakula

Eddie Garcia did, in fact, play a vampire — specifically Dracula himself — in the 1971 film Batuta ni Drakula. Garcia’s performance as Drakula stood out because of his commanding screen presence and impeccable timing. Even in a comedic setting, he gave the character a sophisticated menace — blending elegance, fear, and laughter in one act. Batuta ni Drakula (1971) remains a rare gem in Philippine cinema, highlighting Garcia’s incredible versatility as an actor who could jump from serious drama to dark comedy — even while playing the most iconic vampire of all time.

4. John Lloyd Cruz in Imortal

ABS-CBN’s fantasy-drama series Imortal (2010) stars John Lloyd Cruz as Mateo, a vampire born into a fated war between werewolves and vampires. As he meets Lia, a werewolf, love complicates their worlds even further. Directed by Chito S. Roño, Imortal showcases Cruz’s impressive ability to bring depth to the vampire character, torn between duty and desire. His journey in the series is packed with thrilling battles and haunting moments, leaving audiences mesmerized by his dark, conflicted portrayal.

5. Anjanette Abayari in Halik ng Vampira

Anjanette Abayari famously played the lead role in the 1997 Viva Films horror-fantasy movie Halik ng Vampira (translated as Kiss of the Vampire), directed by Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes, known for their mastery in gothic and fantasy storytelling.

Abayari’s portrayal brought a mix of sensuality, sadness, and fear — she embodied the archetype of the tragic Filipina vampire, both victim and predator. Her character was haunted by her curse, often expressing deep emotion and loneliness, themes that made the movie stand out from typical horror flicks of the era.

Halik ng Vampira became one of the most memorable Filipino vampire films of the 1990s, thanks to Abayari’s commanding presence, stunning visuals, and the film’s gothic atmosphere. It showcased her versatility as an actress — blending beauty, horror, and drama in a single, unforgettable role.

6. Gloria Romero in Takot Ako sa Darling Ko

Gloria Romero appeared in the 1997 horror-comedy film Takot Ako sa Darling Ko. While Romero’s role wasn’t the central vampire character, she added her signature elegance and humor to the movie, grounding the film’s fantasy elements with warmth and wit.

7. Jomari Yllana in Imortal

Jomari Yllana played a vampire role in the ABS-CBN fantasy series Imortal (2010–2011).

He plays Mateo's father. He is the founder of the community of righteous vampires, who only drink animal blood. He attempts to reach out to Lyka to begin peace talks between vampires and werewolves as he believes they can peacefully coexist. He believes vampires don't need human blood to survive and his community proves this possible.

8. Vic Sotto in Vampire ang Daddy Ko

In this fantasy-comedy series, Vic portrayed Count Victor Ventura, half-human, half-vampire, a vampire trying to live a normal life with his family in modern-day Manila. His character was both funny and fatherly — a vampire dad dealing with ordinary household problems while hiding his supernatural identity.

The show gave a lighthearted twist to the vampire myth, showing that even creatures of the night can have family issues, quirky neighbors, and comic misunderstandings. Vic Sotto’s comedic timing and charm made the role entertaining and relatable, especially for younger viewers.

Vampire ang Daddy Ko became one of GMA’s most popular fantasy-comedy series during its run, proving that Filipino audiences enjoy both the spooky and the silly sides of vampire stories.

9. Maricar Reyes in Imortal and La Luna Sangre

Maricar Reyes (now Maricar Reyes-Poon) played the vampire Samantha "Sam" Imperial in the teleseryes Imortal and La Luna Sangre. Her character is the adopted daughter of the vampire leader Magnus and the adopted sister of Sandrino. She is a powerful vampire who is in love with Mateo, the father of the protagonist Malia.

10. Rod Navarro in Drakula Goes to RP

od Navarro was an actor in the 1973 Filipino horror-comedy film "Drakula Goes to R.P.". In the movie, he played the role of the vampire Drakula, which is noted for a scene transitioning from comedy to horror.

The Legacy of Filipino Vampires

From the cursed lovers to vengeful spirits, Filipino actors have embraced the vampire character with distinct takes that keep audiences enchanted and spooked. Their performances delve deep into the complexities of these creatures, merging myth and human experience to deliver unforgettable, spine-tingling portrayals. As Philippine cinema continues to evolve, the vampire legend endures, breathing life into new stories that will surely keep viewers captivated by the thrill of the undead.

Janella, Sue, Kaila, and Charlie Lead ABS-CBN’s New Thriller What Lies Beneath

10/16/2025 11:14:00 PM

ABS-CBN has unveiled its latest suspense thriller series, What Lies Beneath, a gripping tale of friendship, betrayal, and secrets that refuse to stay buried. The series stars Janella Salvador, Sue Ramirez, Kaila Estrada, and Charlie Dizon.

The story centers on four women — Alice (Salvador), Mel (Ramirez), Erica (Estrada), and Beth (Dizon) — whose lives unravel after a single lie and an irreversible act. As hidden truths resurface, trust begins to crumble, alliances break, and survival becomes a test against both danger and guilt.

During the media launch, creative producer Arah Badayos and head writer Benson Logronio shared that the series explores the moral gray areas of injustice, delving into how choices made in desperation can change lives forever.

“It’s clear in the trailer that there was an injustice done,” Arah shared. “Pero mapapakita rin na it was not simple — the people who caused the injustice are victims of injustice themselves.”

The lead stars also opened up about portraying emotionally demanding roles that balance fragility and resilience. Janella, Sue, Kaila, and Charlie revealed how their characters are pushed to their limits as they confront both external threats and their own inner demons.

Joining the ensemble are Jake Cuenca and JM de Guzman, who expressed excitement over portraying roles that challenge their previous screen personas, alongside Yves Flores, Race Matthias, and Jameson Blake. The series is directed by Froy Allan Leonardo and Dado Lumibao.

"What Lies Beneath" premieres October 17 on Netflix, followed by October 18 on iWantTFC, and October 20 on Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live, A2Z, and TV5.

All of Us Are Dead' Season 2 Officially in Production — 3 Years After the Initial Announcement

8/13/2025 09:43:00 PM

After more than three years of silence, Netflix has officially confirmed that Season 2 of All of Us Are Dead is finally in production.

The long-awaited update was revealed through a special behind-the-scenes video showing the cast at a table read — both the familiar faces from Season 1 and new actors joining the highly anticipated second installment. Returning stars include Park Ji-hu, Yoon Chan-young, Cho Yi-hyun, and Lomon. New cast members such as Lee Min-jae, Kim Si-eun, Roh Jae-won, and Yoon Ga-i are also set to breathe fresh life — and likely more chaos — into the zombie-infested world.

Originally released on January 28, 2022, All of Us Are Dead quickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched Korean dramas, following the global phenomenon Squid Game. The show combined teenage drama, survival horror, and emotional storytelling, earning a massive fanbase. It left viewers with a cliffhanger that hinted the zombie outbreak might be far from over.

Fans React: “Still in Production?”

Despite the hype, many fans online weren’t exactly cheering — at least not right away.

“Wait, wasn’t this announced three years ago?” one comment read on X (formerly Twitter). Others chimed in, echoing the sentiment that Netflix had already said the second season was “in production” as early as 2022, only for nothing to come out years later.

“Three and a half years and it’s still a table read?” another fan joked.

But not all reactions were negative. Some netizens expressed renewed excitement after seeing the returning cast and learning about the newcomers. “The wait might just be worth it,” one fan posted. “The new cast looks solid — can’t wait to see what kind of characters they’ll bring.”

Why Season 2 Could Be Even Better

While plot details are still under wraps, there are plenty of reasons to be excited. For one, the surviving characters are expected to return to a world still grappling with the aftermath of the outbreak. Season 1 ended with some of the infected developing unusual abilities — a hint that the zombie virus might have evolved.

With a bigger budget, a fresh storyline, and new characters, fans are hoping for more action, suspense, and perhaps even a deeper dive into the origins of the virus. Rumors suggest that Season 2 may explore how the government handles the outbreak long-term — and what happens when the infection spreads beyond Hyosan.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Lee Jae-kyoo hinted that the next season would focus more on the “survivors and the evolved zombies,” giving the story a darker and more action-packed tone.

A Korean ‘High School of the Dead’?

All of Us Are Dead has often been compared to the Japanese anime High School of the Dead — and for good reason. Both series revolve around high school students trying to survive a zombie apocalypse while society collapses around them. The similarities in tone, pacing, and setting have led some fans to call the Korean series a live-action, spiritual cousin of the anime.

In a feature by Collider, critics noted that while All of Us Are Dead drew inspiration from its anime predecessor, it brought a uniquely Korean perspective — one focused more on social dynamics, bullying, and youth resilience.

Sure, it’s been a long wait — and yes, fans have every right to be skeptical after three and a half years of anticipation. But with Netflix officially confirming production and teasing a fresh batch of chaos, Season 2 is shaping up to be one worth waiting for.

Whether you're in it for the thrills, the emotional drama, or just the zombies, it looks like All of Us Are Dead is finally coming back from the dead — and this time, it’s going to bite even harder.

Challenges Faced by Teens Across Generations: A Universally Shared Experience

9/04/2023 10:05:00 PM

In the tapestry of teenage life, bad habits, bullying, and family issues have always been part of the story, no matter which generation we're talking about. Whether it's the older generation (baby boomers) or the younger one (Gen Z), it seems like these problems always show up. What makes them different is how they happen, how people deal with them, and how much they affect us. And this is just my thoughts and my observation, I'm not a guru or an expert but probably thoughts of me being once a teenager.

For people who love movies and books, these things are like the essential ingredients in a recipe. Just like a dish isn't tasty without the right spices, growing up isn't complete without these challenges. People often say, and it's somewhat true, that these difficulties are a normal part of growing up. At some point in your life, there's always someone who makes things tough for you. What matters is how you handle it and how it affects you.

Recently, during a press event for the TV show "Senior High," one of the main actresses, Andrea Brillantes, talked about being bullied. She explained how her experience was very similar to what happens to some characters in the show.

If we look back at the time when the baby boomers were young, there were movies with actors like Dolphy who often played characters dealing with bullying or family problems. Some famous examples are Facifica Falaypay, Captain Barbell, Bondying, and others.

Similarly, in Herbert Bautista's movies, his characters were usually bullied, as seen in films like "Puto" and "Captain Barbell."

Even though these challenges are a natural part of growing up and life's journey, we still need to find the courage to tell others how we feel. While these problems may not be a big deal for some, they have become serious issues for today's generation that require attention and help.

The "Senior High" series isn't just showing us what today's young people are going through; it aims to make us aware of what might happen and how it affects them.

The series is sure to spark discussions as it unfolds its story in each episode. According to the actors in the series, viewers will easily connect with the characters, their challenges, and their narratives. While the show addresses some prominent themes, it also delves into the hidden problems within each individual and family, offering opportunities for exploration.

Talking openly and honestly is the best way to deal with these issues. If you feel like you need to talk, don't hesitate to confide in someone close to you, like a friend or a family member.

It was asked in the presscon why Arci Muñoz? According to Ms. Glenda, she (Arci) was the first choice for the role since most people always say that she looks like Arci.

Arci on the other hand was very grateful and blessed that she learned a lot from Glenda and that her story, as young as she is, is indeed very inspiring because she has experienced a lot of ups and downs in her life and she kept moving forward. Glenda said that the people who work for her are her moving force because she knows that she is not only working for herself but a lot of people are counting on her.

JM De Guzman is also part of this heart-warming story as "Mac", the husband of Ms. Glenda.

"Ang Babae sa Likod ng Face Mask" is Puregold Channel's First Romantic Comedy Digital Series

Comedy despite the quarantine and lockdowns, is probably the genuine attitude of Pinoys, knowing when it is time to laugh after the hardships and tragedies.

The kilig-tawa story of Malta, played by Herlene Budol, and her sweet but quirky romance with the incredibly handsome Sieg, portrayed by Joseph Marco, sent romcom fans in frenzy throughout the series. Many could relate to the twists and turns a woman’s heart goes through in learning to love herself and be open to the love of another.

“Ang Babae” increasingly appealed to young and young-at-heart viewers and morphed into a massive online sensation. After all, it was a feel-good series with cliffhanger moments, racking up more views and leaving heady fans wanting more after each exciting episode.

On top of their effusive support gleaned from each episode’s comments, fans also drove “Ang Babae” content to hit status on TikTok. As seen in all the videos labeled under the #angbabaesalikodngfacemask hashtag, followers expressed their own creativity and enthusiasm on TikTok.

Fan edits of lead characters Malta and Sieg, as well as clips of their favorite scenes garnered over 11 million views on TikTok, spreading the kilig and laughter to more enthusiastic fans and potential viewers who eventually latched on to the show.

The TikTok trend backs up the numbers as it shows the amazing dedication “Ang Babae” fans display. They might as well brace for a second season, considering the finale’s last scene: just when Sieg proposed marriage to Malta, her childhood ‘crush’ pops up in her life.

Vincent Co, President of Puregold Price Club, Inc., is justifiably proud of the company’s unique retailtainment initiative. “We are very happy with the success of ‘Ang Babae sa Likod ng Face Mask,’ ” says Co.

“We could not have done this without the wonderful cast as led by Herlene Budol and Joseph Marco; the entire production crew; and the followers that viewed ‘Ang Babae’ week after week and spread the word about this mini series,” he affirms. “We hope to bring more panalo stories and entertainment to all our viewers and customers in the future.”
