The Itchyworms release second installment of holiday-themed album,Christmas Starts When The Bers Begin

11:03:00 AM

More story or kwento from one of our favorite bands, the Itchyworms. As they continue to celebrate their 25th anniversary, they just release the second installment of their holiday-themed album, Christmas Starts When The Bers Begin—out today, December 8, 2021 (Wednesday) on all digital music platforms via Sony Music Philippines.

Capturing the spirit of Pinoy Christmas with songs that will surely make its way into classic status, Christmas Starts When The Bers Begin contains two new tracks, “Halo-Halo” and “Meri Xmas 2 U,” and last year’s “Have A Merry Christmas” and “Maligayang Pasko.”

Written and produced by drummer and lead vocalist Jazz Nicolas, “Halo-Halo” is a festive reinforcement of the classic tradition with characteristically Pinoy sensibilities. It’s an upbeat tune that celebrates the Yuletide season in a way that feels home.

According to Jazz, “Halo-Halo” is a metaphorical reference to the various beliefs and traditions of Filipinos about Christmas. “There are people who believe in God, there are people who just shop, and there are people who consider it as a perfect time for receiving gifts. It all happens during Christmas, and it’s a magical feeling for everyone.”

Another new offering, “Meri Xmas 2 U” is a fun and sparkly reimagining of the Pinoy Christmas carols in one rocking shimmy treat. Complete with kundiman-charged guitars, raw percussions and tambourine sounds, and infectious vocal harmonies, the track pays tribute to the street caroling traditions in the country during the pre-pandemic times.

“This is an ode to the kids who knock on doors to sing Christmas songs,” lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jugs Jugueta shares. “They rarely have real instruments with them, but sometimes when they’re lucky, they bring acoustic guitars or makeshift tools. They use cans with stretched plastic on top for the ‘drums’ and flattened tansan as tambourines. While they don’t sing in perfect tune, the happy Christmas vibe that they bring is what gets you and tugs your heartstrings.”

“Meri Xmas 2 U” is written by Jugs Jugueta, and performed by the alt-rock band with their families and friends who sang and played makeshift instruments: Jug’s wife Andie, Chino’s brother Echo, Jazz’s brother Peavey and his fiancé Antonette, and their road manager Gabs.

The 2021 AWIT Awards Winner for Best Musical Arrangement also plans to add more songs every year to complete the Yuletide-themed album. This well-curated process gives them the opportunity to create music at their own pace, while giving casual listeners something to uplift their spirits before the year ends.

As Jugs put it, “It is an ever-growing Christmas album. We released two Christmas songs last year, then we added two more this year, and we plan on releasing more Christmas songs every year! And every time we add songs, we also add elements to the album cover. It’s now streaming on Spotify and other digital platforms, but once we have enough Christmas songs, we hope to release it as a physical album on vinyl.”

Christmas Starts When The Bers Begin is part of the band’s celebration of their 25th year in the Philippine music industry, which follows the release of their original track “Eto Na (Ang Maliligayang Araw)” and the six-part series, Worms Upon A Time: An Itchyworms Podcast.

The year-long musical treat commenced with the vinyl pressing of their album, Waiting For The End To Start, which immediately sold out upon its release, the launch of “The Life I Know,” the first of its kind in the Philippine stop-motion animation music video, and the release of “Waiting For The End To Start” music video, which serves as an artistic take on the ‘dystopian future post-pandemic’ life in the Philippines.

The Itchyworms are also set to drop a mockumentary that chronicles their 25 years in the music industry at the end of the year.

“Halo-Halo” and “Meri Xmas 2 U” are out now on all digital music platforms via Sony Music Philippines. Listen to the partial batch of ‘Christmas Starts When The Bers Begin’ here.

The track is produced by Rob Bisel, Carter Lang, thankgod4cody, and Dylan Patrice. With her soulful vocals enveloping a minimalist sonic backdrop and laid-back synths, SZA reflects on a rocky romantic relationship that seemed to have taken a toll on her emotional health.

Upon its release, the mesmerizing urban track received positive response from various music critics all around the world, with Brooklyn Vegan calling an “airy R&B” in “fine form.” It also marked an impressive performance on its first day as it debuted at No. 1 on both Spotify US and Apple Music US charts despite the surge of holiday-inspired tracks, and is predicted to place high on the Billboard Hot 100 charts next week.

DJ and Singer, Papa Obet of Barangay LS 97.1’s unveils “Papa Obet Sessions EP”

11:03:00 PM

DJs or Disc Jocks are the voice behind our favorite radio stations and our story or our kwento for now is about one of your favorite disc jocks in Barangay LS 97.1 none other Papa Obet. Yes, Papa Obet is now and officially a recording artist as he releases “Papa Obet Sessions,” it's an EP under GMA Music released last December 10, on-air and on digital streaming platforms worldwide.

Containing four tracks: "Ikaw Lang At Ako," (composed and originally performed by Janno Gibbs), "Kung Mababalik Ko Lang," by 604, "Kung Malaya Lang Ako," by Kris Lawrence and Papa Obet’s original composition "Ang Una Kong Pasko," this EP is a dream come true for him who shared during his interview that the ambition written in his high school yearbook was “to be a successful recording artist.”

“The EP was inspired by the Spotlight Music Sessions, an online music channel which showcases the talent of Pinoy artists through live performances,” he says.

“Ang Una Kong Pasko” is dedicated to the OFWs who are spending their Christmas away from their loved ones. “It was inspired by my experience when I had to spend Christmas on my own for the first time. And I dedicate this to the OFWs who are miles away from their families and are celebrating Christmas far from home for the first time,” shares Papa Obet.

Before becoming a Barangay LS disc jock, Papa Obet used to join various singing contests including GMA’s talent competition Protégé. He is also the songwriter behind Barangay LS’ theme song "Tayo Ay Forever" sang by Kapuso artists Ken Chan and Rita Daniela.

“I still can’t believe that my singing career could actually get this far. I’ve always wanted to be a radio DJ, but I’ve been singing since I was a child. I would join singing contests in Bataan and sometimes win. Then, I became a DJ here at Barangay LS and I’ve been here for 10 years. And now, GMA Music has given me an opportunity to be an official and legit recording artist and it has been really fun working with them,” says Papa Obet.

So, does a talented DJ receives weird requests on his show during the pandemic? Well, according to Papa Obet there are no weird requests but he mentioned that his show in Barangay LS 97.1 sure made a number of listeners and followers. That was probably the weirdest thing that happened to him during the pandemic. Fortunately, I made a follow-up question to Papa Obet, does he entertain listeners who request him to sing? So, according to Papa Obet, this is actually not new because he does sing and he even shared that there are listeners who ask and made requests for him to sing the song, that is what they did in his online show.  What else can you expect from a DJ ballader, nothing but pure heartfelt songs.

Talent, looks, voice and something else, only from Papa Obet!

Papa Obet Sessions EP is now available for streaming on iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, and other digital music streaming services worldwide.

See Love and Life's Color with DonBelle in "Love is Color Blind"

10:46:00 PM

If you're one of the baby boomers then you have probably enjoyed watching TV and movies in plain black and white. I, myself who loves classic movies somehow once thrilled with black and white. The story of DonBelle's first cinematic collaboration movie revolves around colors. "Love is Color Blind," is Star Cinema's newest offering, which premieres on Dec. 10 (Friday) on KTX.ph, Sky Pay-Per-View, and iWantTFC.

After the hit love team in the series, He's Into Her, the couple will be giving another romantic chill for their fans and followers with the newest love film, directed by John Leo Garcia, as best friends Ino (Donny) and Cara (Belle). Cara is there to help him add color to his life and show him that he is not too blind to find love, despite the vision problem that prevents him from seeing vibrant colors. However, along the way, they both meet others who attempt to blur the lines of their relationship.

Regardless of these not-so-colorful instances among them, will Ino finally find the colors of happiness and love he's looking for with Cara?

During the media conference, I managed to throw in some short questions for the couple. What colors they both see on each other. As for Belle, she sees Donny with full of colors, while Donny sees a bright yellow on Belle, which he explained that she lights her world.

Find out how their vivid love story will unfold in the world premiere of "Love is Color Blind" starting December 10 on SKY Pay-Per-View, KTX.ph, and iWantTFC.

Catch all of Ino and Cara's sweetest and most colorful moments together in the comfort of your homes.

Hopefully, through our film, the audience will be able to broaden their understanding of people dealing with mental health problems,” said the film's director, Lester Dimaranan.

Second phase of the Governance in Justice programme (GOJUST): EU commits over Php 1 billion to support the Philippine Government’s efforts to improve access to justice for all Filipinos

7:07:00 AM

Sharing this interesting news in the justice part of the government.

The European Union, in partnership with the Philippine Government, launched the second phase of its Justice Sector Reform Programme: Governance in Justice (GOJUST).

With an investment of Euro 19 million (Php 1.1 billion) over a period of four years, GOJUST will support ongoing efforts by the Philippine Supreme Court, the Department of Justice, and the Department of the Interior and Local Government, to improve access to justice for all Filipinos and thus, contribute to inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development.

The overall support provided under GOJUST includes a component to help strengthen the Commission on Human Rights.

The launch took place virtually on 25 November 2021 with a keynote address by the Chief Justice of the Philippines, Alexander G. Gesmundo. Messages were also given by the Secretary of the Department of Justice, Menardo I. Guevarra, Secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government, Eduardo M. Año, and EU Ambassador Luc Véron.

“The European Union has been a committed partner to the Philippine’s Justice Sector reform since 2006. Our engagement stems from the importance we attach to democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Also, by working with the Philippines on improving access to justice, in particular for vulnerable communities, we can improve access to all other civil, political, economic and social rights.”

“We are honored to accompany the justice sector reform efforts with GOJUST II, which has been developed in close partnership with the Supreme Court, the Department of Justice and the Department of Interior and Local Government, and will be our largest investment in this area to date,” said EU Ambassador Luc Véron.

"It will be a partnership that once more will deliver dividends where it counts most – in making justice, human rights, and the rule of law not only well-entrenched and enduring institutions in Philippine society, but also a felt reality in the everyday life of every Filipino," said Secretary of the Department of Justice, Menardo I. Guevarra.

“Composed of the DOJ, the DILG and the Supreme Court, the JSCC is both a venue and a mechanism for communication, principled cooperation and studied coordination without sacrificing institutional independence. Through the JSCC, the coordinated approach to delivering justice is the chosen platform to achieve real time satisfaction of justice needs," said Chief Justice of the Philippines, Alexander G. Gesmundo.

“We at the Department of the Interior and Local Government are honored and grateful to work again with the distinguished vanguards of justice in pursuing wider paths of improving access to justice for all Filipinos,” said DILG Secretary Eduardo M. Año.

“The launching of the Justice Sector Reform Programme: Governance in Justice II or GOJUST II presents us all a greater opportunity not only to come up with reforms and timely initiatives in the delivery of justice, but also to expand the reach and fortify the foundations of what we have started to work on in the past four and a half years,” he added.

Recognizing that many issues involving justice and justice delivery originate in local communities, Secretary Año vowed that the DILG and its attached agencies will work closely with the justice sector and other stakeholders in bringing about much-needed reforms to give rise to a fairer, more effective, efficient, and accountable justice, especially in the local and grassroots level.

“While we recognize that our work may not completely reform the justice system overnight, it will certainly lock in some basic principles and lay concrete steps that we firmly believe are going to make a fairer and more just society over the long term,” the Secretary said.

GOJUST will support the development of more responsive and accountable justice services in the Philippines. It will contribute to reducing case backlogs with the automation of courts and prosecution offices among other innovations; support the coordination of justice sector agencies at national and local level (Justice Zones); and foster the use of research in the design and management of justice sector policies.

To improve access to justice – with a focus on those most vulnerable, including women, LGBTI, persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, and other excluded groups – the programme includes a grant mechanism. Funds will be awarded to civil society organizations and law schools with the best initiatives on rights awareness, paralegal training, policy advocacy and direct legal services, and the strengthening of the Barangay Justice System and informal justice providers.
v In line with the findings of the Gender and Social Inclusion Assessment (GESI), this new phase of GOJUST will support justice sector agencies in addressing gender inequalities in access to justice. For example, the programme will contribute to combatting violence against women and girls by increasing the barangays’ capacity to issue protection orders as mandated by the law.

The first phase of GOJUST ran from 2016 to 2020.

GOJUST is implemented through technical assistance by the British Council and logistical and grant management support from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). The support for the Commission on Human Rights under GOJUST is implemented by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).

Ben&Ben to push the boundaries of concert production on a scale that’s never been done before with ‘Kuwaderno’

9:48:00 PM

Ben&Ben are redefining the virtual concert-going experience with the biggest headline show of their career.

Aptly titled Kuwaderno: A Ben&Ben Online Concert, the Filipino nine-piece collective are pushing the boundaries of music shows in the new normal setting by integrating creative disciplines such as drama, dance, orchestra, and technology with a live performance. Their highly anticipated major concert will be staged at the SMART Araneta Coliseum, and will be streamed live on December 5, 2021, from 8pm to 11pm via digital streaming platform, KTX.ph.

“We can’t deny the fact that it’s the biggest project we’ve undertaken so far, and I think you just somehow know that it’s a leap of faith when the streams of guidance and providence lead you to the right people who believe in the same vision you have: To bring the music and the messages they carry to life,” the award-winning group said. “This spirit of collaboration was one of the defining themes of our album ‘Pebble House Volume One: Kuwaderno’ and it was only by natural desire that we brought the same spirit and attitude when we began working on the concert. As for the play between grand and intimate, we really wanted our listeners to relish in the grandiosity of what their support means to us. Doing a concert on this scale and bringing them closer into that bigger picture is our way of expressing immense gratitude to them as well.”

The audio-visual spectacle promises to bring the immense joy of experiencing live music and give an impression of conceptual grandness that are at par with the most memorable concerts in recent history. From mounting multiple-stage setups to performing in one of the biggest live music venues in the country, Kuwaderno aims to open new possibilities despite the limitations of the platform, and intimately build a connection with the audience all over the world.

The awe-inspiring creativity and ambition that Kuwaderno dares to achieve, wouldn’t be possible without the collaborators that painstakingly put their heart and soul into the project. Concert director Paolo Valenciano, along with co-director Maribel Legarda, Philippine Theater Association (PETA), and veteran light designer Shakira Villa-Symes—to name a few, understood Ben&Ben’s unique vision and translated them so clearly to create a cohesive piece of work. Ben&Ben attest to how significant their contributions are, not only in turning the concert into a reality, but in making sure that they are able to nurture a creative environment that promotes healthy exchange of ideas. “Working closely with them on this concert only made it clearer to us why they are the biggest names in the industry. The flow of ideas and creative energies really went on naturally because of their openness, and their generosity to share with us their thoughts, but what makes them more admirable is their skill to work within the limitations that we have and to adapt when faced with challenges. We definitely learned a lot from their work ethic.”

Believing in the magic that happens when different forms of art intertwine, the prolific folk-pop asserts that some feelings are best conveyed not just by the music elements alone. This prompted Ben&Ben and their team to include actors and dancers as part of the visual narrative to give the audience a semblance of being physically present with them throughout the concert journey. “Movement and dance and the entire visual narrative of it all woven into our music brought our songs to life,” the band said in a statement. “The talented dancers we’ve worked with, headed by choreographer Gio Gahol, are from different dance groups as well. It is amazing to see how they seem to get along and dance so passionately with each other easily.”

In terms of production design, the team stepped up their game in being more in line with the times, and pushing the envelope in terms of how the music can be represented visually. According to the nine-piece ensemble, each stage has its own purpose, its own symbolisms and visual elements. Even the lighting has its own poignant significance. “We want our listeners to know that each piece of the puzzle was thoughtfully included, and we’re excited to see them piece everything together when they watch the full show.”

The band is confident that Kuwaderno: A Ben&Ben Online Concert will not only deliver unparalleled innovation to local concert productions, but also bring light to a lot of people suffering in silence during the most challenging of times. “Having the opportunity to do so during the pandemic, we also felt such a huge responsibility to be able to inspire more people with stories of humanity and hope. We’ve received a lot of messages from Liwanag (the fan club) telling us how the band has helped them get through the tough times. Hopefully through this concert, we’ll be able to use our platform in making them feel that they’re not alone in this fight.”

Ms. Val Guico, the General Manager of Ben&Ben Music Productions, is also equally grateful to the people involved in the production for making strides in pulling off an envelope-pushing event. According to her, one of the main goals of mounting Kuwaderno is to extend help to the production team whose livelihood and work have been greatly affected by the pandemic. “Bulk of the concert earnings will be shared to everyone behind the scenes,” the concert producer reveals. “They are the unsung heroes of the show. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to bring Ben&Ben’s vision to life.” Tickets to Kuwaderno: A Ben&Ben Online Concert can be purchased via the KTX website. The TINATANGI package (priced at PHP 8,000), which gives you access to the online concert, plus an Exclusive 1 on 1 Harana Session with the band on Zoom and a raffle entry to the Exclusive Ben&Ben House Tour, is already SOLD OUT.
