Top Ten All-Time Favorite Horror Movies That Inspire Halloween Costumes

10/31/2024 07:15:00 AM

Halloween parties gives us the moment to dress up and have fun. Did you ever wonder what are the most common costumes the people love to dress during Halloween?

Well, here are what fans of horror usually take on the chilling personas of some of cinema's scariest characters. From iconic slashers to supernatural creeps, these figures bring a mix of nostalgia and fear to costume parties. Below, we look at the top ten favorite horror movies that have left an unforgettable mark on pop culture, driving fans to embody these characters every October.

1. Michael Myers – Halloween (1978)
Actor: Nick Castle

One of horror's most recognized villains, Michael Myers first terrified audiences in John Carpenter’s classic Halloween. After escaping from a mental institution, the masked killer returns to his hometown of Haddonfield to hunt down teenager Laurie Strode. Michael’s featureless, ghostly-white mask, mechanic jumpsuit, and his slow, unstoppable pursuit of his prey cemented him as a terrifying Halloween icon. Costume enthusiasts love donning Michael’s mask, re-creating his unfeeling stare and slow, dreadful stride.

2. Freddy Krueger – A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Actor: Robert Englund

With his burnt face, razor glove, and worn striped sweater, Freddy Krueger is instantly recognizable. Wes Craven’s creation in A Nightmare on Elm Street has haunted generations in their sleep, as Freddy invades the dreams of teenagers in the fictional town of Springwood. Portrayed with disturbing charm by Robert Englund, Freddy’s dark wit and sinister laugh make him a popular choice for costume-goers who enjoy delivering a few scares along with a good one-liner.

3. Ghostface – Scream (1996)
Actor: Multiple actors, including Skeet Ulrich and Matthew Lillard in the first film

The Ghostface mask, derived from the famous Edvard Munch painting The Scream, was an instant hit for fans and horror enthusiasts. In Wes Craven’s Scream, Ghostface calls and terrorizes high schooler Sidney Prescott and her friends, asking chilling questions about scary movies. Unlike many horror villains, Ghostface is often portrayed by a different person in each sequel, keeping the mask’s mystery alive. The black robe and white mask make this costume both affordable and eerie, perfect for Halloween parties.

4. Jason Voorhees – Friday the 13th Series
Actor: Ari Lehman, Kane Hodder (various films)

Jason Voorhees, the hockey-mask-wearing slasher of Camp Crystal Lake, has been a horror staple since his debut. Though he only briefly appears in the original Friday the 13th, Jason’s character becomes a relentless force in later sequels. Jason’s hulking frame, silent demeanor, and brutal methods make him a favorite for those looking to add a touch of terror to their Halloween. With a tattered jacket, worn jeans, and iconic hockey mask, a Jason costume always stands out.

5. Pennywise – It (1990, 2017)
Actors: Tim Curry (1990), Bill Skarsgård (2017)

Stephen King’s Pennywise the Clown has traumatized children and adults alike for decades. The 1990 mini-series featured Tim Curry’s unsettling portrayal, while Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd brought a fresh intensity to the role in the 2017 adaptation. Pennywise lurks in the sewers, preying on the town of Derry’s children, often greeting them with the sinister line, “We all float down here.” A Pennywise costume complete with ruffled clown suit, red balloon, and menacing grin brings plenty of chills and remains a Halloween favorite.

6. Regan MacNeil – The Exorcist (1973)
Actor: Linda Blair

The Exorcist is often hailed as one of the scariest movies of all time, and Linda Blair’s portrayal of the possessed Regan MacNeil is unforgettable. When Regan’s innocent face becomes twisted and horrifying, it’s a sight that viewers never forget. Her torn, nightgown-clad look, greenish skin, and unsettling, demonic expressions make it an iconic costume choice. Adding makeup to re-create her sickly appearance and using eerie voice effects ensures an authentically spine-tingling impression.

7. Chucky – Child's Play (1988)
Voice Actor: Brad Dourif, with a doll as Chucky

What’s scarier than a murderous doll with the soul of a serial killer? Child’s Play introduced Chucky, a Good Guy doll who becomes possessed by the spirit of a killer named Charles Lee Ray. Voiced by Brad Dourif, Chucky’s playful, childlike voice mixed with dark humor and deadly intent made him a horrifying addition to the horror genre. A striped sweater, overalls, red shoes, and wild red hair complete the classic Chucky look, making this costume a hit for both humor and scares.

8. Carrie White – Carrie (1976)
Actor: Sissy Spacek

Stephen King’s Carrie introduces audiences to a bullied high school girl with telekinetic powers, leading up to a prom night disaster. Sissy Spacek’s haunting portrayal of Carrie White at her prom, drenched in blood, has left an indelible mark on horror history. The combination of a pink prom dress, a blank expression, and splattered blood creates a powerful and chilling look. Carrie is a popular costume for those who enjoy a darker, tragic figure with a blend of supernatural terror.

9. Leatherface – The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
Actor: Gunnar Hansen

The chainsaw-wielding Leatherface is one of horror’s most terrifying villains. Loosely inspired by real-life killers, Leatherface is part of a twisted family that terrorizes a group of friends. His gruesome mask made of human skin and his butcher’s apron add to the horror, with his constant pursuit of his victims making him unforgettable. Leatherface’s grotesque mask and his signature chainsaw are unmistakable, making this costume ideal for those who want a truly fear-inducing Halloween look.

10. Annabelle – Annabelle (2014) and The Conjuring Universe
Character portrayed as a doll

In The Conjuring universe, Annabelle is a haunted doll that leaves a trail of terror. Based on a real-life Raggedy Ann doll believed to be possessed, Annabelle is recognized by her eerie stare and cracked porcelain face. Dressed in a white, vintage dress with pigtails and a red ribbon, she may seem innocent, but her malevolent aura is anything but. Fans of the supernatural genre can bring Annabelle’s sinister vibe to life, making her a haunting addition to any Halloween gathering.

Each of these horror icons has left an indelible mark on moviegoers and Halloween alike. From the silent but deadly Michael Myers to the nightmarish Freddy Krueger, these characters give Halloween parties a dose of cinematic horror. Whether you're after classic scares or modern chills, these characters provide a perfect blend of fright and fun—ideal for an unforgettable Halloween.

Realizing the Spooky Origins and Evolution of Halloween

10/30/2023 11:02:00 PM

The historian in me just kicked-in. So, here's my short article about the origins and evolution of Halloween. Crafted to make the living enjoy life this Halloween.

Halloween, celebrated on October 31st, is a time when people across the world embrace the spooky and supernatural. But where did this eerie holiday come from, and how did it evolve into the modern celebration we know today? Let's explore the fascinating history of Halloween, its ancient roots, and how it has found a place even in countries like the Philippines, predominantly Christian.

A Glimpse into History:
Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that on the night of October 31st, the boundary between the living and the dead blurred, allowing spirits to return to Earth. To ward off these wandering souls, people would light bonfires and wear costumes.

Christian Influence:
As Christianity spread, November 1st became All Saints' Day, a day to honor saints and martyrs. The night before All Saints' Day became known as All Hallows' Eve, eventually shortened to Halloween. It integrated some of the Samhain traditions, such as costumes and the belief in supernatural beings.

Here are some of the traditions or activities up right before November 1.

Five Spine-Tingling Halloween Traditions:

  1. Jack-O'-Lanterns: Carving pumpkins into scary faces or intricate designs is a Halloween tradition that originated from the Irish legend of Stingy Jack.
  2. Trick-or-Treating: The custom of children going door-to-door for candy can be traced back to a practice called "souling" in medieval Europe. In the Philippines, some call it "Nangangaluluwa."
  3. Costumes: Dressing up as witches, ghosts, and monsters is a nod to the Celtic belief in warding off spirits with disguises.
  4. Haunted Houses: The idea of creating spooky, haunted attractions during Halloween started in the United States. In the Philippines you can check out the known places in Baguio City.
  5. Apple Bobbing: An old tradition that dates back to Roman times, where young people would try to bite apples floating in water without using their hands.

Halloween in the Philippines:
The Philippines, a predominantly Christian country, has managed to embrace Halloween while maintaining its Christian values. Filipinos often participate in Halloween traditions, such as costume parties and trick-or-treating. Still, they add a unique twist by incorporating religious elements, like All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, which follow immediately after Halloween.

Families visit cemeteries to clean and decorate the graves of their loved ones, light candles, and offer prayers. In this way, they combine the spooky fun of Halloween with the remembrance of the departed, blending both ancient and Christian customs.

In totality, Halloween has a rich history, stemming from ancient Celtic beliefs and evolving through the influence of Christianity. Today, it's celebrated worldwide in various ways, even in countries like the Philippines, where Christian traditions harmonize with the spooky spirit of Halloween. So, whether you're carving pumpkins, dressing up in costumes, or simply enjoying some tasty treats, Halloween offers something for everyone to enjoy and remember the past, both the living and the departed. So this coming All Hollow's Eve, Happy Halloween!

When was the last time you've watch a horror movie? Well, if you want some horror movie to watch right before Halloween, then you can have this on your list. "Hellcome Home" the newest offering of ABS-CBN films-Star Cinema this Halloween, topbills Dennis Trillio, Raymond Bagatsing, Alyssa Muhlach, and Beauty Gonzales.

Helmed by young director Bobby Bonifacio Jr. (of last year's Cinema One Originals' top grosser, "Hospicio",) the film tells the story of two families: The Domingos-husband and wife Nandy (Raymond) and Cynthia (Beauty) with kids Fred, Mia and Pia, portrayed by Teejay Marquez, Gillian Vicencio, and Miel Espinosa, restectively - and the Villareals- husband and wife Peter (Dennis) and Marcy (Alyssa) with kids Sky (Nhikzy Calma) and Baby Starr.

The Domingos and the Villareals both want the same thing: to have a peaceful home away from all the outside noise. However, it seems they cannot escape their inner chaos.

Upon settling in, their dream home becomes a nightmare from hell as things happen--sounds and whispers too uncanny to ignore, strange shadows lurking at every corner, and trespassers bearing offerings. Both families experience horrifying phenomena that are eeriely parallel.

Perhaps the house is evil itself, hungry for souls and wants to feed, once every few years. Who can save them from the house? Or is there no escape when hell has come home?

"(Basically), it's a story of two families na tumira sa iisang bahay. Pagdating nila roon they are being haunted, ginugulo sila ng kung anu-amung klaseng evil spirits," says Bonifacio Jr.
"Helcome Home" marks the first time the cast worked together, except for Beauty and Raymond, who teamed up in ABS-CBN's afternoon series "Pusong Ligaw" back in 2017.

This film also marks Dennis comeback to Star Cinema after doing the romance movie "You're Still The One' with Maja Salvador and Richard Yap in 2015.

Alyssa and Gillian both come from blockbuster horror films this year, 'Clarita' and 'Eerie,' respectively.

'Hellcome Home' premiere October 30 in cinemas across the Philippines.
