Realizing the Spooky Origins and Evolution of Halloween

11:02:00 PM

The historian in me just kicked-in. So, here's my short article about the origins and evolution of Halloween. Crafted to make the living enjoy life this Halloween.

Halloween, celebrated on October 31st, is a time when people across the world embrace the spooky and supernatural. But where did this eerie holiday come from, and how did it evolve into the modern celebration we know today? Let's explore the fascinating history of Halloween, its ancient roots, and how it has found a place even in countries like the Philippines, predominantly Christian.

A Glimpse into History:
Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that on the night of October 31st, the boundary between the living and the dead blurred, allowing spirits to return to Earth. To ward off these wandering souls, people would light bonfires and wear costumes.

Christian Influence:
As Christianity spread, November 1st became All Saints' Day, a day to honor saints and martyrs. The night before All Saints' Day became known as All Hallows' Eve, eventually shortened to Halloween. It integrated some of the Samhain traditions, such as costumes and the belief in supernatural beings.

Here are some of the traditions or activities up right before November 1.

Five Spine-Tingling Halloween Traditions:

  1. Jack-O'-Lanterns: Carving pumpkins into scary faces or intricate designs is a Halloween tradition that originated from the Irish legend of Stingy Jack.
  2. Trick-or-Treating: The custom of children going door-to-door for candy can be traced back to a practice called "souling" in medieval Europe. In the Philippines, some call it "Nangangaluluwa."
  3. Costumes: Dressing up as witches, ghosts, and monsters is a nod to the Celtic belief in warding off spirits with disguises.
  4. Haunted Houses: The idea of creating spooky, haunted attractions during Halloween started in the United States. In the Philippines you can check out the known places in Baguio City.
  5. Apple Bobbing: An old tradition that dates back to Roman times, where young people would try to bite apples floating in water without using their hands.

Halloween in the Philippines:
The Philippines, a predominantly Christian country, has managed to embrace Halloween while maintaining its Christian values. Filipinos often participate in Halloween traditions, such as costume parties and trick-or-treating. Still, they add a unique twist by incorporating religious elements, like All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, which follow immediately after Halloween.

Families visit cemeteries to clean and decorate the graves of their loved ones, light candles, and offer prayers. In this way, they combine the spooky fun of Halloween with the remembrance of the departed, blending both ancient and Christian customs.

In totality, Halloween has a rich history, stemming from ancient Celtic beliefs and evolving through the influence of Christianity. Today, it's celebrated worldwide in various ways, even in countries like the Philippines, where Christian traditions harmonize with the spooky spirit of Halloween. So, whether you're carving pumpkins, dressing up in costumes, or simply enjoying some tasty treats, Halloween offers something for everyone to enjoy and remember the past, both the living and the departed. So this coming All Hollow's Eve, Happy Halloween!

Hellcome Home Will Scare You Out of Your Seat this Halloween

10:16:00 AM

When was the last time you've watch a horror movie? Well, if you want some horror movie to watch right before Halloween, then you can have this on your list. "Hellcome Home" the newest offering of ABS-CBN films-Star Cinema this Halloween, topbills Dennis Trillio, Raymond Bagatsing, Alyssa Muhlach, and Beauty Gonzales.

Helmed by young director Bobby Bonifacio Jr. (of last year's Cinema One Originals' top grosser, "Hospicio",) the film tells the story of two families: The Domingos-husband and wife Nandy (Raymond) and Cynthia (Beauty) with kids Fred, Mia and Pia, portrayed by Teejay Marquez, Gillian Vicencio, and Miel Espinosa, restectively - and the Villareals- husband and wife Peter (Dennis) and Marcy (Alyssa) with kids Sky (Nhikzy Calma) and Baby Starr.

The Domingos and the Villareals both want the same thing: to have a peaceful home away from all the outside noise. However, it seems they cannot escape their inner chaos.

Upon settling in, their dream home becomes a nightmare from hell as things happen--sounds and whispers too uncanny to ignore, strange shadows lurking at every corner, and trespassers bearing offerings. Both families experience horrifying phenomena that are eeriely parallel.

Perhaps the house is evil itself, hungry for souls and wants to feed, once every few years. Who can save them from the house? Or is there no escape when hell has come home?

"(Basically), it's a story of two families na tumira sa iisang bahay. Pagdating nila roon they are being haunted, ginugulo sila ng kung anu-amung klaseng evil spirits," says Bonifacio Jr.
"Helcome Home" marks the first time the cast worked together, except for Beauty and Raymond, who teamed up in ABS-CBN's afternoon series "Pusong Ligaw" back in 2017.

This film also marks Dennis comeback to Star Cinema after doing the romance movie "You're Still The One' with Maja Salvador and Richard Yap in 2015.

Alyssa and Gillian both come from blockbuster horror films this year, 'Clarita' and 'Eerie,' respectively.

'Hellcome Home' premiere October 30 in cinemas across the Philippines.
