ALOHA's Equation for Brainpower, Hello to Mental Math Magic

9:41:00 PM

One of my dream destination is Hawaii, but my recent event is not about beach and big waves. It’s all about numbers, abacus and problem solving. Yes, you read it right it involves figures and mathematics. Though its name is ALOHA it does not basically says hello but instead it stands for Abacus Learning of Higher Arithmetic. It may not literary means hello but it’s hello to the world of numbers.

Me, together with some other bloggers were invited for the media conference of ALOHA Mental Arithmetic. It is one of the learning centers established here in the Philippines earlier before the pandemic.

According to its Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Ivy Sato, ALOHA acquired their license in 2018 and started their growth. Unfortunately, the pandemic happened and some of their branches were unable to continue. Only a few managed to stand the struggle.

What is ALOHA?

ALOHA is a brain development program that is created and specifically designed for children ages 4 to 13. The founder, Mr. Loh Mun Sung, founded, adapted and developed this concept in 1993. It is based on the Abacus Computational methods from China and Taiwan. The program was initially introduced in Malaysia and gained popularity that leads to its expansion to other countries.

As it was presented during the media conference, ALOHA offers a comprehensive curriculum that focuses on enhancing a child’s mental arithmetic skills and overall brain development. It provides training that enables children to perform calculations swiftly and accurately without relying on external tools such as calculators, computers, or other gadgets. The program utilizes specific teaching methods to help children improve their ability to solve math problems using their mental abilities, regardless of the complexity of the numbers involved.

As proof of the effectivity of the program is the success of its students who participated in the ALOHA Mental Arithmetic International Competition at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last July 30. The participants, Darylyn Faith Fabilane, 11 years old from Fizal, and Rheana Yasmin Campos, 10 years old from Caloocan won as the grand champions of the competition out of 700 students from different countries like Bangladesh, Croatia, China, Canada, Cambodia, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Panama, taiwan, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Venezuela, and the Philippines. Also jake Conner Yao, 9 years old from San Juan City was crowned Champion while Ryan Warren Merdegia, 9 years old from Pampanga, brought home the second runner-up title.
v At the media conference, Rheana Yasmin Campos made an appearance and gave a little demonstration together with her coach of how they compute simple and complex numbers by using the abacus and mental computation.

ALOHA Mental Arithmetic is not just about mathematical skills but it is also about targeting the child’s IQ (intelligence quotients) and EQ (emotional quotient). The program aims to assist children in completing their homework more efficiently, developing exceptional mental calculation skills, improving problem-solving abilities, enhancing their capacity to remember information and visualizing conceptual maps in their minds. With this, and by engaging in ALOHA, children can strengthen their cognitive abilities and build more confidence in their math skills, alleviating their Math Anxiety.

Why ALOHA?

Here are 5 things to know about ALOHA that parents can consider.

World Reference. ALOHA has catered to more than 4 million students in more than 40 countries since its establishment in 1993 up to today.

Quality Material. The teaching material used in ALOHA is designed, revised, and updated constantly by a group of experts in the educational field.

Competitions. ALHOA prepares the students to demonstrate their regional, national, and international skills, solving 70 operations in 5 minutes.

Certified Coaches. All ALOHA coaches are qualified and trained to teach the program, receiving constant support from the Quality Department.

Scientific Studies. There is a study demonstrating that students enhance their abilities and increase their academic performance with ALOHA.

What are the Programs of ALOHA

During the media conference, Ms. Sato, shared the different programs of ALOHA. Accordingly, all programs are created for each age bracket and the category or level of learning. It is also shared that all students must course through the ladder of learning.

So, here are the programs that ALOHA offers. The first program, Kinder Tiny Tots, is designed for children ages 4-5 years old and consists of two levels. The second program, Tiny Tots, is for children ages 5-7 years old and encompasses ten levels. The last program is the Kids program, which is intended for students ages 8-13 years old and comprises of eight levels.

Ms. Sato, said that the recent competition shows that young Filipinos can unlock their full potential and make a significant impact in the global arena as long as they are given adequate support back home.

Support, training, and guidance are the aspects needed for a successful student, most especially in the field where most of us less like it, Math.

ALOHA Mental Arithmetic is accredited by Malaysia Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Association (MAMAA) and Zheijang Abacus Association of China

Knowledge Channel's “MATHDALI” is Back with New Season

9:12:00 AM

If I remember it correctly the very first TV show that I have watched that explains about math is also from the Kapamilya Network which is titled as "Mathinik". I was glad that they have a new one that is going for its new season, "Mathdali". It's really easy when your cognitive and creativity are in line together.

For this season of Mathdali, Kapamilya actor and Math enthusiast Robi Domingo and his gang, Kuya Igi (Igi Boy Flores), Kuya Vic (Vic Robinson), and twins Ate Joj and Ate Jai (Joj and Jai Agpangan), are back to bring the fun in learning and solving math problems as Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc.’s (KCFI) “MathDali” returns for new episodes this season.

“MathDali” is a program aligned with the K-12 curriculum of the Department of Education and aims to prove that learning Math isn’t difficult as it uses key strategies and practical classroom approaches in making learning more fun and enjoyable for each student.

KCFI developed “MathDali” in 2016 after years of familiarity with the Philippine educational landscape. Through the program, integral life skills like critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration and the growth mindset, which Filipino students need to develop, are honed. The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 found these as very strong skills-component in students from top performing countries.

“Don’t be afraid of Math because with it, we learn values that we can apply to real life. We don’t just teach kids about numbers and solving problems, we also teach them to be more determined, more patient, and more creative,” Kuya Vic said.

By regularly watching “MathDali,” Filipino students can improve their understanding and practical use of Math concepts, and their scores in tests.

The new season of “MathDali” airs every Sunday on ABS-CBN at 9:15am and everyday at 10:00am-10:30am and 1:30pm-2:00pm on Knowledge Channel on SKY Cable, SKY Direct, and ABS-CBN TV Plus.

A production of Knowledge Channel Foundation, ABS-CBN Corporation, and ABS-CBN Foundation Inc., “MathDali” is a certified child-friendly in the 2019 AnakTV Seal Awards.
