Produced by Mentorque Productions, known for the award-winning horror film Mallari, Uninvited promises another milestone for Filipino cinema. The film is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a key partner in last year’s MMFF success. Adding to its pedigree is the involvement of Project 8 Projects, marking their first collaboration with Mentorque.

Prepare for a cinematic experience that’s set to leave audiences on the edge of their seats.

"Hindi Lang 'To Basta Party!"

The tagline “Hindi lang ’to basta party!” (“This is no ordinary party!”) teases the gripping mystery at the heart of Uninvited. What are the real stories and secrets behind the characters, and how are they connected?

Directed by Dan Villegas in his comeback directorial film after six years, Uninvited showcases an unforgettable collaboration of some of the most celebrated actors in Philippine cinema, with a screenplay written by Dodo Dayao.

Official Synopsis

Eva Candelaria (Vilma Santos) has been waiting for this day for the last ten years—the birthday party of Guilly Vega (Aga Muhlach), the billionaire who brutally murdered her only daughter a decade ago and escaped justice.

Disguised as a socialite, Eva attends the opulent event with a single goal: revenge. As the night unfolds, she carefully stalks each person involved in her daughter’s murder, inching closer to her ultimate target. But who is the true villain of her story? Is it Guilly or his daughter Nicole (Nadine Lustre)? Unarmed and without a concrete plan, Eva must make life-or-death choices as her options dwindle. Will she fulfill her mission, or will the night claim her life instead?

A Gift to Filipino Audiences

In celebration of MMFF’s 50th anniversary, Uninvited stands as a testament to the unparalleled excellence of Filipino filmmaking. Mentorque Productions, following the massive success of the MMFF 2023 entry Mallari, teams up with Project 8 Projects to craft a movie that guarantees a meaningful and unforgettable experience for viewers.

“We understand the challenges Filipinos face today,” shares Mentorque CEO John Bryan Diamante. “Watching a movie in theaters is a luxury, so we made sure this is worth every peso.”

It’s indeed a full cinematic experience in theaters this Christmas!

URC Brands Remain Filipino Household Favorites

11/23/2024 10:55:00 PM

Six Universal Robina Corp. (URC) brands have earned a spot as household favorites for millions of Filipinos, based on the Brand Footprint report by Kantar Group.

The report revealed that three URC brands—C2, Nissin, and Cream All—rose in this year’s rankings. Meanwhile, Great Taste secured a spot in the top 10 most chosen brands in the Total FMCG and Beverages categories, and Piattos held its place as a top pick in the food sector.

Payless, meanwhile, landed in the list of 20 most chosen food brands for the first time.

“We are happy to see that our well-loved brands are reaching even more Filipinos, delighting them with good food choices everyday,” said Mian David, URC’s chief marketing officer and managing director of URC International.

“This report also inspires us to continue giving Pinoys products of superior quality and value. Indeed, Great Taste, C2,Piattos, Payless, Nissin and Cream All are just some of our brands loved by Filipinos across generations,” she added.

Kantar’s Brand Footprint study uses a metric called “consumer reach points” (CRP), which measures a brand’s strength based on how many shoppers are buying the brand and how often.

It essentially shows which brands are winning at the point of purchase.

“Filipinos are now spending more on FMCG, presenting a bigger opportunity for more brands to win. Among these brands, many of them are able to do so with improved penetration,” said Mieke Bartholomeus, Strategic Insights Director at Kantar’s Worldpanel Division.

URC’s Great Taste coffee – with 440m CRP – ranked 8th among fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), and fourth in the beverages sector.

Ready-to-drink tea C2’s CRP rose 25 per cent to 32m, making it the 14th most chosen brand in the beverages sector.

The number of households that bought C2 rose by some 281,000 in 2023, with better presence in groceries, sari-sari stores and market stalls.

In the food sector, snack brand Piattos held on to the 7th spot, while Nissin instant noodles climbed to No. 16.

Another instant noodles brand, Payless, broke into the list of Top 20 brands in the segment with a CRP of 74m, landing in 19th place in the food sector and 50th among FMCG brands.

Core variant Payless Xtra Big is still a big draw, while the still small, newly-launched Payless Sakto is already driving traction for the brand.

Cream All went up to No. 19 in the dairy sector.

As part of Kantar, Worldpanel provides brands and retailers with a unique, 360-degree understanding of consumer behavior across the globe. Worldpanel continuously monitors shopping behavior to shape the brands of tomorrow by better understanding people everywhere.

URC produces iconic brands such as Great Taste, C2 Cool & Clean, Piattos, Maxx candy and Cream-O cookies, which have been part of Filipinos’ lives for decades. One of the country’s largest food and beverage manufacturers, URC also has significant, and growing, presence in ASEAN. Its leading regional brands include Lexus, Tivoli and Fun-O.

Brands from food and beverage firm Universal Robina Corp. (URC) continue to be among the top choices among millions of Filipino households, according to brand consulting firm Kantar Group’s Brand Footprint report

Why Mount Purro Nature Reserve?

11/23/2024 10:13:00 PM

Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountain range, just a short drive from Metro Manila, lies Mount Purro Nature Reserve. It's more than just an eco-park—it's a sanctuary where nature thrives and conservation efforts flourish. During our visit, we discovered why this protected area in Rizal has become a favorite spot for nature lovers, trekkers, and those simply looking for a peaceful retreat from the city.

A Place Rooted in Conservation

At Mount Purro, everything starts with a commitment to conservation. As soon as you step into the reserve, you’ll notice the lush greenery that surrounds you, a testament to the park's ongoing reforestation efforts. The trees, rivers, and wildlife in the area are part of a delicate ecosystem that the people at Mount Purro work hard to protect.

Their conservation initiatives go beyond just maintaining the beauty of the place; they’re ensuring that future generations can enjoy the same natural wonders. It’s an inspiring reminder of the importance of protecting our environment, not only for ourselves but for the planet as a whole.

The Dumagat Culture: Living in Harmony with Nature

One of the highlights of our visit was learning about the Dumagat culture. The Dumagat are the indigenous people of the Sierra Madre, and they’ve lived here long before modern development touched these lands.

At Mount Purro, we were given the opportunity to immerse ourselves in their traditions. We visited their traditional huts, learned about their way of life, and heard stories of how they coexist with nature. The Dumagat people have a deep respect for the land, and through their stories, we gained a greater appreciation for what it means to live sustainably.

This cultural exchange was one of the most meaningful parts of our trip. It gave us a sense of connection not only to the environment but also to the history and people of the area.

Trekking Through Nature's Wonderland

If you’re an adventure seeker, trekking at Mount Purro won’t disappoint. The trails here are perfect for both beginners and seasoned hikers. As we walked through the forest, we were greeted by the fresh scent of pine trees, the chirping of birds, and the cool mountain breeze. It was the kind of peacefulness you can only find in nature.

The trek leads up to Malvar's Peak, where you can take in panoramic views of Rizal’s untouched landscape. The sight of the rolling hills, dense forests, and distant mountains is simply breathtaking. It’s a reminder of how beautiful the Philippines is when nature is left to flourish.

Cooling Off with a River Trek

After our trek, we took part in another of Mount Purro’s activities—the river trek. Wading through the clear, cool waters of the river was both refreshing and fun. It’s the perfect way to cool off after a hike, and the beauty of the surrounding forest adds to the experience.

The river is clean and inviting, a testament to the efforts of the reserve to maintain the purity of the environment. Whether you’re walking through the shallow parts or simply sitting by the water’s edge, it’s a relaxing and invigorating experience.

Packages and What to Expect

Mount Purro offers a variety of packages for guests, whether you're planning a day trip or an overnight stay. We opted for an overnight package, which included cozy, eco-friendly accommodations nestled right in the heart of the forest. The rooms are simple but comfortable, blending perfectly with the natural surroundings.

One of the things that stood out during our stay was the tranquility of the place. Waking up to the sounds of birds, feeling the fresh mountain air, and enjoying the peacefulness of nature—these are experiences that are hard to come by in our fast-paced, urban lives.

For those seeking relaxation, there are plenty of quiet spots around the reserve where you can just sit, breathe, and take in the beauty of the environment. For the more adventurous, activities like trekking and river trekking are available to keep you engaged with the land.

Why Mount Purro is Worth a Visit

Our visit to Mount Purro Nature Reserve was more than just an adventure—it was an experience that reconnected us with nature, culture, and conservation. The reserve is a reminder of how important it is to preserve our natural resources, and it offers a space where we can truly appreciate the beauty of the environment.

Whether you’re looking for an adventurous trek, a cultural experience with the Dumagat, or simply a peaceful retreat into nature, Mount Purro has something to offer. It’s a place where you can escape the noise of the city, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and take home not just memories, but a renewed sense of connection to the natural world.

So if you’re planning your next trip, consider a visit to Mount Purro Nature Reserve. It’s a destination where nature and conservation come together to create a truly meaningful experience.

Denise Julia Unveils Bold New EP, Sweet Nothings (Chapter 2), Redefining Filipino R&B

11/23/2024 09:39:00 PM

Filipino R&B artist Denise Julia cements her place in the music scene with the release of her latest EP, Sweet Nothings (Chapter 2), distributed by Sony Music Entertainment.

The 9-track collection showcases her growth as an artist, blending emotional depth with refined production. Revisiting themes from her 2023 EP, the new release offers a more mature perspective, marked by personal experiences and heartfelt storytelling.

“These songs feel more real, with richer textures in the production, and they’re a lot more personal,” Denise shares. “This chapter reveals more about who I am, especially after coming out earlier this year. My writing has become freer and more daring—I’m saying what I want without holding back.”

With this release, Denise Julia continues to solidify her reputation as a powerful voice in Filipino R&B, combining honesty and artistry in every track.

Sweet Nothings (Chapter 2) embodies every aspect of Denise Julia: the real person stepping out of the limelight and online fanfare, stripped to the core with nothing but life lessons and bittersweet endings. On her latest EP, she candidly expressed the feelings of being vulnerable and in love, and putting on a brave face even when confronted by the difficult times.

Denise Julia's songwriting, characterized by unsparing confessionals that explore her sexuality and the messy nature of adolescent life choices, shines brighter this time around—a proof that there’s a silver lining in openness. In Sweet Nothings (Chapter 2), the R&B/soul vixen doesn’t pretend to have it all figured out, but she knows that through her storytelling, she would inspire more women and queer folks to go with their gut feel and embrace the love and respect they truly deserve.

“I wanted to capture those bittersweet moments of love and self-discovery—the real stuff we don’t always put into words,” DJ adds. “My inspiration was a mix of personal experiences, growing into myself, and just the feelings people keep bottled up but wish they could say out loud."

Denise Julia’s latest EP draws a lot from classic R&B but doesn’t shy away from embracing its modern edge. Whether it’s a sensual bop straight from the Aaliyah/Brandy playbook or a confessional ballad that reveals moments of unfiltered fragility, the B.A.D. hitmaker knows when to lurch forward or snap back with her chameleonic but sultry singing style. For this EP, she hones her contemporary R&B sound with touches of soul and pop, going for something that is both nostalgic and fresh.

Some of the highlights of the EP include the focus track “sweet nothings,” a collaboration with Jay R, the R&B King of the Philippines. Propelling the narrative forward with transcendent moments of harmony and sensual bliss, the song tackles the honeymoon-phase feeling in a relationship where everything feels so good that you don’t want to let go.

According to the ‘Patron Saint of Situationships,’ as the fans often call her, working with Jay R was a dream come true. “He understands R&B on such a deep level, and having his influence really elevated the song. I feel like if you told young Denise that she would collaborate with the King of R&B in the future, she would have never believed you, so this is such a monumental thing for me. He’s the best at what he does, and I hope to take what I’ve learned from working with him into my own craft.”

Other notable collaborations in the EP were the DENȲ-assisted “don’t matter,” which showcases the duo’s effortlessly sultry side while maintaining their individuality throughout the process, and “twin flames,” which features Vietnamese-American artist thuy. Denise Julia considers both artists an inspiration, with each adding their own flavor to the material.

Here is the track list for Sweet Nothings (Chapter 2):

1.better than he does
2.sweet nothings (feat. Jay R)
3.thinkin’ bout you
4.twin flames (feat. thuy)
5.(boy it’s just) attraction
6.inhibitions
7.bet
8.there’s no way you’d want me back
9.don’t matter (feat. DENȲ)

Denise Julia’s new EP, Sweet Nothings (Chapter 2), is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.

Denise Julia is also slated to headline her solo concert soon! For future announcements and details, visit www.denisejulia.com.

House Bill Seeks to End Dress Code Discrimination in Government Frontline Services

11/22/2024 07:00:00 PM

Akbayan Party-list Representative Perci Cendaña has filed House Bill 11078, also known as the "Bawal Judgemental Bill," to eliminate strict dress codes in government offices offering frontline services. The measure aims to make government transactions more accessible, especially for marginalized communities, by addressing policies that discriminate against individuals based on their attire.

“Strict dress codes only end up discriminating against the poor and indigenous communities,” Cendaña explained. “We want to remove judgment based on clothing, especially when it has no bearing on the services being accessed.”

Cendaña emphasized that public services should be inclusive and welcoming. "Not everyone can afford an ‘outfit check.’ Government offices should serve everyone equally, regardless of socioeconomic status," he added.

What the "Bawal Judgemental" Bill Proposes

Formally titled the Open Door Policy Act, the bill seeks to prohibit government agencies from imposing unnecessary dress codes on citizens availing of frontline services. This includes situations where specific attire or footwear has no practical connection to the transaction being performed.

If passed, the measure would remove a significant barrier for individuals from low-income and indigenous communities, ensuring they can access essential government services without fear of discrimination.

Beyond the Bill: Conversations with Rep. Cendaña

In a candid discussion, Rep. Cendaña shared insights into his legislative priorities beyond the "Bawal Judgemental" Bill. Among his advocacies are:

  • The SOGIE Equality Bill, promoting equal rights for members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
  • The Mining Act, which seeks to protect the environment and ensure sustainable mining practices.
  • The Kian Bill, named after Kian delos Santos, to address the issues of extrajudicial killings and police accountability.
Cendaña also touched on the challenges in agriculture, particularly the difficulty of encouraging young people to pursue farming. Many farmers dream of their children becoming engineers, doctors, or lawyers, rather than following in their footstep.

During my years of involvement in youth organizations, I often met students whose parents were farmers. We encouraged them to take pride in their roots, reminding them that their families’ land and labor made them wealthier than they realized—not just in resources, but in values and resilience.

This perspective ties into the broader theme of inclusivity and opportunity that Rep. Cendaña's bill represents. It’s a reminder that government services—and indeed society—should lift people up rather than hold them back due to arbitrary rules or societal biases.

A Step Toward Inclusive Governance

House Bill 11078 signals a step forward in ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their background, feel welcome and respected in public spaces. By breaking down barriers like unnecessary dress codes, the bill champions accessibility and equality in government services—values that resonate with the core principles of public service.

Ely Buendia Releases Second Solo Album, Method Adaptor

11/19/2024 11:29:00 PM

Filipino music icon Ely Buendia is set to release his second solo album, Method Adaptor, on Friday, November 8, 2024. The album, under Offshore Music and Sony Music Entertainment, marks a significant moment in his solo career.

Method Adaptor stays true to the signature sound that has made Buendia a legend in OPM and Pinoy rock. The album dives into themes of memories, life experiences, and social issues, showcasing his growth as a storyteller. Known for crafting relatable narratives with heartfelt lyrics and intricate music, Buendia blends emotional depth with musical complexity. His latest work offers a rich listening experience, skillfully balancing simplicity and sophistication to captivate his audience.

As Ely explains it best, “I think all the songs have something to do with rebelling—be it from the disappointments and hardships of life or from the control that people want to have on your mind. I would say these are the most defiant songs I’ve written so far.”

Navigating through themes of sorrow, anger, joy, and triumph, the ten-track record shapes up to be one of the most captivating rock releases that came down the pike in recent memory. After being in the music business for more than 30 years, Ely admits that this album explores vulnerability that comes from a place of complicated humanity, revealing moments of fragility and darkness as he deals with the pressures of social expectations and career.

“Fame didn’t mix well with me,” Ely Buendia shares. “I just felt it got in the way of my trying to evolve as an artist and made me more guarded as a whole. Coming out for me means owning everything, both my failures and successes.”

Produced by Jerome Velasco and Audry Dionisio, with a little help from Erwin Romulo, Method Adaptor sounds consistently delightful from top to bottom, but with enough room to surprise or provoke.

"Kandarapa," the album's focus track and one of its highlights, is about fighting through the hard times not knowing if you can make it until the end. The music legend reveals that there are times when pressure in life can be a bit overwhelming, and all you want is to buckle and submit to the whim. “Sometimes you feel like you’re going to have to battle your way through the rest of your life.”

Other featured tracks in the album include previously releases “Tagpi-Tagping Piraso” and “Bulaklak Sa Buwan;” the somber piano ballad “Faithful Song,” the brooding, synth-pop tune “Kontrabando,” and the menacing stomper “Tamang Hinala”—to name a few.

Check out the Method Adaptor track list:
1. Faithful Song
2. Kandarapa
3. Bulaklak Sa Buwan
4. Tamang Hinala
5. Deadbeat Creeper
6. Sige
7. Tagpi-Tagping Piraso
8. Kontrabando
9. Chance Passenger
10. Esprit de Corpse

Ely Buendia’s Method Adaptor is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Offshore and Sony Music Entertainment.

Award-winning Filipino filmmaker Joseph Abello brings his climate advocacy to the screen using the vivo V40 in his latest short film, created for the Oscar M. Lopez Foundation’s Mga Kwento ng Klima (MKK) Short Films 2024. This annual competition invites storytellers to spotlight the Filipino experience of climate change and emphasize the urgent need for environmental action.

Known for acclaimed films What Home Feels Like and Double Twisting Double Back, Abello directed Water for Three Sisters to depict the impact of water interruptions in Cainta, Rizal, his hometown. Using the V40, he highlights the struggles of local communities, urging Filipinos to reflect on the pressing climate challenges affecting lives nationwide.

“As a filmmaker, very powerful to be a filmmaker because people watch us, we can influence people through our content. So, it’s really time to do something more than just fun or more than just content. Do something na may laman, do something that can really influence people for the good,” Abello shared.

A loyal vivo user, Abello recently upgraded from the vivo V21 to the V40, specifically for this project. The vivo V40, developed in partnership with the renowned German optics company ZEISS, boasts three 50MP cameras that deliver professional-grade image quality, a perfect match for Abello’s creative vision.

So, when deciding ano bang mobile phone yung gagamitin ko to shoot this short film, I knew talaga I had to go with vivo. Like I said, I really trust vivo as a brand,” he explained.

Abello shot his film using the vivo V40’s 4K video resolution at 30 frames per second, achieving cinematic quality comparable to high-end cameras. “For me, using vivo V40 allows me to create a film not just in a budget-friendly way but at the same time, produce a film na yung quality niya parang shoot mo talaga using an expensive filmmaking camera,” he said.

Expressing his gratitude to vivo Philippines, Abello added, “Thank you so much vivo Philippines for helping me create my short film using your vivo V40, co-engineered by ZEISS. It really helped me produce a quality-looking short film."
