Water Resilience in Action: SM's Conservation Efforts for a Changing Climate

6/19/2026 07:57:00 AM

For more than two decades, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime) has been championing responsible resource management through water circularity initiatives across its nationwide network of SM Supermalls. Since the late 1990s, the company has continuously invested in water conservation programs designed to promote sustainability and support the responsible use of one of the country's most vital resources.

At the heart of these efforts are innovative water management systems integrated into mall operations. These solutions help reduce water consumption, minimize wastage, and lessen reliance on the national water supply. By maximizing efficiency and reusing resources whenever possible, SM Malls continue to create long-term value while helping address the growing challenges of water security in an increasingly unpredictable environment.

Macro to Micro: SM’s approach to water conservation

Against the looming possibility of an extended drought caused by El Niño, saving every drop of water finds greater importance for SM Supermalls. Designed with sustainability in mind, SM Malls use innovative water management systems that not only promote saving water from wastage but also significantly reduce consumption. This helps lessen the use of fresh water resources from national water systems and leave more water for its surrounding communities to use.

SM ensures sustainable water use through advanced recycling and rainwater harvesting systems. In 2025, sewage treatment plants in its 89 malls recycle an estimated 6.6 million cubic meters of property wastewater for non-potable use. The rainwater treatment facility in SM Baguio innovatively harvests and treats rainwater collected during the wet season and transforms it into water for kitchen and tenant use.

As a key customer touchpoint in water management, faucets also regulate the outflow of water for every use. SM’s investments in "push delay" faucets create sustainable operations to strengthen water conservation. These faucets save water by preventing it from being left running by restricting water flow through a certain window of time.

Technology then paved the way for enhanced conservation, and SM started using no-touch, sensor type faucets in 2015, far before the sanitary restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sensor type faucets help save water by automatically shutting outflow of water once the sensor does not detect a user. Additionally, these types of faucets typically require less water pressure, which also reduces water waste. Significant investments in systems such as sensor faucets also reduce wear and tear on fixtures and equipment, resulting in long-term savings and improved water conservation.

With its implementation, SM saw a 59% reduction in water waste, translating to saving the equivalent of a 1.5-liter bottle of water per user using the faucet over just 7 seconds.

By equipping its most-loved malls with water-efficient fixtures enhanced with technology, SM is protecting resources critical not just to its operations but to its surrounding communities. Under the guidance of the Water for Tomorrow pillar of the SM Green Movement, SM champions sustainable water use, reducing environmental impact and securing access to water for generations to come.

Liza B. Silerio, SM Supermalls VP for Corporate Compliance and Sustainability; Engr. Junias Eusebio, SM Supermalls VP for Operations; Joaquin San Agustin, SM Supermalls EVP for Marketing; Engr. Charles Singson, SM Supermalls AVP for Mall Operations, Mina Kahn, SM Supermalls AVP for Transport Management)

SM Supermalls has unveiled the “SM Supermalls Sustainability Digest 2025: Work and Wins.” The inaugural report showcases how sustainability is woven deeply into SM’s core strategies, ensuring its nationwide network of most-loved Supermalls remain safe, resilient, and environmentally responsible for the benefit of Filipinos and the communities that surround its business.

The comprehensive report spotlights SM’s environmental efforts that stem from the sustainability pillars of energy, water, and waste. Through the digest, SM Supermalls reinforces its commitment to blending environmentally responsible practices into its operations focused on creating more resilient communities and advancing environmental management.

“What makes the sustainability approach of SM Supermalls unique is the scale in which we are able to implement our hard work. For us sustainability is not about mere compliance. It is deeply embedded in every aspect of operations across our nationwide network of most-loved Supermalls to serve our customers and communities better,” said Joaquin San Agustin, SM Supermalls Executive Vice President for Marketing.

SM Supermalls’ dedication to environmental responsibility dates back to the 90s, when Mr. Hans Sy, current Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime Holdings, pioneered resource-saving initiatives, particularly by leading the installation of sewage treatment plants that recycle water for irrigation, sanitation, and air-conditioning.

Today, SM’s environmental efforts continue to evolve through integrated solutions in renewable energy, water stewardship, and waste management across its mall operations nationwide.

On energy efficiency, SM Supermalls Vice-President for Mall Operations Junias M. Eusebio highlighted the company’s increased reliance on renewables to support its long-term sustainability goals.

“Not all solar energy can power the whole supply. But rather, it complements the energy mix of the grid plus the solar energy we generate.”

SM’s environmental programs have also expanded to involve broader customer touchpoints for deeper community engagement across the Philippines.

“Our scale gives us the unique privilege of involving our customers and communities across the country in the shared journey toward sustainability. SM not only strives to implement measures that preserve our natural resources, we also empower everyone to engage with customer touchpoints on sustainability at their most-loved SM mall,” said Liza B. Silerio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Sustainability.

SM’s executives for sustainability and mall operations highlight its initiatives for water conservation, energy efficiency, and waste management.

Moreover, SM Supermalls enhances community resilience against natural disasters by continuously upgrading its rainwater catchment basins, automated weather stations, and earthquake-monitoring systems. SM Supermalls has carried Mr. Sy’s vision forward by making sustainability a core part of how its malls are designed, managed, and operated.

Together with government institutions, local government units, stakeholders, and volunteers, SM Supermalls has strengthened its role in working for a cleaner, greener future for all.

Additionally, SM Prime’s Net Zero 2040 goal envisions powering malls with renewable energy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These objectives align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals that integrate environmental action and resilience-building.

Mark Lapid and the Many Hats He Wears

6/07/2026 08:44:00 AM

Some people are known for one thing. Mark Lapid is not one of them.

Depending on who you ask, he could be the former governor of Pampanga, a tourism official, an actor, a husband, a father, or simply the son of one of Philippine showbiz and politics' most recognizable names. The interesting part is that he has managed to be all of those at different points in his life, and sometimes all at the same time.

Listening to Mark Lapid talk about his career, you get the impression that he doesn't see these roles as separate worlds. For him, they are all connected by one thing: responsibility.

Many people first got to know him through politics. Long before social media became part of everyday life, Lapid was already involved in public service. He started young, serving as SK chairman before eventually becoming governor of Pampanga at just 24 years old.

That alone would have been a major achievement for most people.

But instead of staying in one lane, Lapid continued exploring different paths. After his stint as governor, he moved into tourism development, helping oversee projects through the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA). His work allowed him to contribute to the growth of destinations and tourism facilities across the country.

What stands out is how naturally he talks about service. There is no dramatic story about chasing power or titles. Instead, his focus seems to be on getting the job done and helping where he can.

At the same time, he maintained another career that many government officials would probably find difficult to juggle, which is acting.

Coming from a family deeply rooted in entertainment, the move wasn't surprising. Still, acting is not something that can be done halfway. It requires time, commitment, and a willingness to step into a completely different world.

Lapid appeared in films and television projects while continuing his work in government. For most people, managing one demanding career is already challenging. Managing two is another story altogether.

When asked how he balances everything, his answer is refreshingly simple: priorities.

There is no secret formula. No life hacks. Just knowing what matters most at a given moment and making sure time is spent where it is needed.

Of course, that comes with sacrifices.

He admits that family often bears the weight of his busy schedule. There are moments he misses because of work commitments. Fortunately, he has a strong support system at home, especially his wife, actress Tanya Garcia.

Because she comes from the same industry, she understands the late nights, long shoots, and unpredictable schedules. That understanding has helped them navigate the challenges that come with raising a family while both pursuing careers.

As a father, Lapid seems especially aware of how much the world has changed. He often compares his childhood, when television viewing was limited and choices were few, to the reality facing young people today.

Back then, kids waited for their favorite cartoons to air. Today, almost everything is available with a few taps on a phone.

For him, that is exactly why parents need to stay involved.

Not by restricting children from enjoying technology, but by helping guide them through it.

Perhaps that's what ties all of his roles together.

Whether he is a government official making decisions, an actor portraying a character, a husband supporting his wife, or a father guiding his children, the common thread is responsibility.

And maybe that's why Mark Lapid's story is interesting.

It isn't just about politics. It isn't just about show business.

It's about a man constantly switching hats, adjusting to different responsibilities, and doing his best to make each role count.

‘Backrooms’ Brings Jump Scares That Feel Real and a Horror Experience That Pulls You In

5/30/2026 10:53:00 PM

Horror movies often try to scare viewers. Backrooms does something a little different. It does not just try to scare you from a distance, it tries to make you feel like you are inside the fear itself.

After watching the advance screening at SM Megamall, one thing stood out clearly: this film knows exactly when to hit you with a jump scare, and more importantly, it makes those moments feel earned rather than forced.

Based on the viral internet creepypasta, Backrooms brings to life the unsettling idea of accidentally slipping into an endless maze of empty, liminal spaces. But what makes the film effective is not just the concept, it is how it executes the experience of being trapped.

From the start, the movie builds tension slowly, almost patiently. It lets silence sit too long. It lets empty rooms feel too wide. It lets footsteps echo just a little more than what is comfortable. And just when the viewer starts adjusting to that rhythm, it breaks it.

That is where the jump scares land.

They are not overused, and they are not random. Instead, they come at moments where the audience has already started lowering their guard. That timing makes them feel sharper and more impactful. There were moments where the entire theater reacted at the same time—not because the film shouted at the audience, but because it quietly built up pressure until it snapped.

What is impressive is how the film manages to let viewers experience what the characters are going through. The sense of disorientation is not just shown—it is felt. The camera work, sound design, and pacing work together to create a feeling of being lost inside something that does not make sense.

You are not just watching someone walk through endless hallways. You start to feel like you are walking with them.

Another strong point is how the movie balances its scares without relying too much on heavy visual effects or excessive prosthetics. Instead of overloading the screen with digital monsters or constant CGI chaos, Backrooms leans into suggestion. It uses shadows, movement in the distance, and sudden changes in sound to trigger fear.

This choice actually makes the horror more believable. When something finally appears—or even when something almost appears—it hits harder because the film has already trained the viewer to fear what they cannot fully see.

There is also a grounded, almost physical quality to the film’s environment. The set design feels tangible, as if those walls and hallways could actually exist somewhere forgotten. This adds to the immersion. It does not feel like a digital creation. It feels like a place you could accidentally end up in.

And that is where the film succeeds most.

It makes the audience share the same discomfort as the characters: confusion, anticipation, and that constant feeling that something might be just around the corner.

The experience is stressful in a controlled way. It keeps the audience alert, almost like they are waiting for something they cannot fully prepare for. And yet, even in those tense moments, there is a strange curiosity that keeps you watching.

What makes Backrooms stand out in modern horror is its restraint. It does not try to overwhelm the viewer. It does not rely on nonstop chaos. Instead, it builds a rhythm of silence, tension, and sudden impact that feels more personal than theatrical.

It is not just a movie you watch.

It is a movie you react to.

Backrooms premieres on June 3. If you are expecting a typical horror film, this might not be it. But if you want something that makes you feel the tension, the silence, and the sudden fear of the unknown, then this film delivers exactly that.

Just be ready—because the scares do not come often, but when they do, they feel uncomfortably close.
