Yoshinoya Gyudon Eating Contest on It’s 4th Year

9:40:00 AM

This is actually my second year to cover the Yoshinoya Gyudon Eating Contest. Last year was my first which I was able to witness the winner Douglas James Candano, not actually just eat but gobbled up more than 6 bowls of gyudon. Also one of the bloggers, Florencio Jusay, Jr. won in the media category. It was indeed a day of gyudon. Imagine the look of these contestants eyeing to finish more bowls of gyudon than the other and also imagine the number of gyudon that Yoshinoya have to prepare. Well, it’s more than imagine but it happened last year.
So this year, for the last several weeks of getting qualifiers from different branches of Yoshinoya, they finally completed the list of individuals eager and hungry to take on the challenge and finish a number of gyudon. As Yoshinoya’s Gyudon Eating Contest marks its 4th year, many hungry Filipinos are in to test their mettle to gastronomic challenges. If Coney Island in New York, USA has the world-famous Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, then the Philippines definitely has Yoshinoya. And just like in the previous editions, the Yoshinoya Gyudon Eating Contest promises to be nothing short of excitement.

Labor Day Job Fair at SM City Fairview

1:51:00 PM
Nobody says that landing a job is easy, unless you’re the top of your batch and you’re one of the highly qualified individual. But if you’re one of the average Juans who've graduated from your class, well you’d better start putting an extra effort in hunting a job. It pays off when you’re diligent enough.  Just like what had happened in the recently concluded Nationwide Labor Day Job Fair. It was a nationwide job fair event happened in different selected malls of SM. The event has indeed made a huge impact for job hunters, especially in SM City Fairview where Kwento Ni Toto covered the said event.

Axe Apollo's Last Man Standing, Filipino on Space

11:27:00 PM

As we all know Axe is a brand that brings unique products for men.  I remember one of their contest that made chaos in one of the malls in the metro, the AXE Raid.  They sure made a bang with that contest and now they've brought much higher than the ground as Axe created another unusual contest for the brave and strong willed men with the Axe Apollo National Challenge.  Having 400 men strive and battled to be the last two winners to be shipped off to train at the international AXE Apollo Space camp in the U.S. and with a possibility of being the First Filipino into Space.

Correspondent Justin witnessed the battle of these men as they all undergone with different challenges to test their strength, their will, and of course their guts.  As the usual saying "no guts no glory" and for these 400 men they are there to perhaps test themselves for how long they can last or perhaps win as well.

Celebrating Easter At SM North EDSA

11:30:00 PM

Happy Easter from Kwent Ni Toto!  Christ is risen today!  Today is Easter Sunday and as usual we started our at an early time or should I say at dawn.  To some they celebrate this day with an activity called "Salubong" but for us the day is welcomed with songs and praises.  A thanksgiving that Christ is risen from the dead and He is alive.

Since the day will be very busy, we indulge our morning with a heavy breakfast from one of our favorite food chain which opens early.

SM City Sta. Mesa 3Day Sale Coverage

10:33:00 PM

Sunday has always been a busy day for Kwento Ni Toto but for this specific day it is much more busier than what I have thought. Of course this has nothing to do with the usual Sunday regimen, this time it's a busy day inside the mall. If you're one of our dear followers, I'm sure you've already read about the recent post regarding the sale that will transpire at one of the SM Malls which is the SM City Sta. Mesa or mostly known as SM Centerpoint.

In last year's sale features we have already featured some of their sale activities here in this blog. Kwento Ni Toto believed that many have seen it and we just don't know if shoppers was able to hunt for some good discounts and best buys. But of course with SM's sales you'll definitely find one for you. I do hope that you, my readers, was able to go there as well.

Las Piñas Water Lily Festival on Its 7th Year

11:17:00 PM

Event covered by Angelyn Demo

It was a Thursday Morning and thank God it wasn't raining. The day was just right for the event and for travel but as usual traffic has always been there that caused me to be late on the designated meeting place! Then were off to the festival.

It was the celebration of Las Piñas' 7th Water Lily Festival. A celebration that has become more popular every year because of the livelihood products produced out of Water Hyacinth led by the Managing Director of the the Villar Foundation, Cynthia Villar.

We arrived early but it seems that the celebration started much earlier. The festivity commenced already and people are in tune with the celebration. People were pretty eager to watch the pageant perhaps because of their bet candidates and of course most of them are really lovely. Many people were present during the festivity and the only thing that is not pleasant was the weather. Though it was not raining it made a not so good condition because it made us look tired and haggard because of that hot weather. Perhaps the heat also flared up because of the number of guests and participants present.

I did try to ask people around to know what they think of the celebration and one of the person I've interviewed was a “kagawad” (councilor) of the barangay. She said that they were lucky that projects like these were conceptualized and helped the communities a lot. After the interview she even introduced me to their barangay captain.

The Water Lily Festival was conceptualized in order to promote the water hyacinth-based livelihood products made by the residents of Las Piñas living along the river. Before these water lilies or water hyacints were treated as aquatic pests that clog the river but now are useful raw materials. Products made from these water lilies are baskets, trays, slippers and other functional and ornamental items.

The festival highlighted for this year the Miss Las Piñas Water Lily which was a pre-pageant that was held on Tuesday (July 17) and last Thursday (July 19) the winner was crowned as this year's Miss Las Piñas Water Lily. Since the water lily is the highlighted ingredient of this festival, gowns made of this material were created by known designers like Noli Hans and as well the barangay residents themeselves. Other highlights of the 7th Water Lily Festival are the fluvial parade, street dancing, musical performances from Manunugtog Kawayan and other local bands, water lily weaving demonstrations and of course, a display exhibit of various handicrafts made out of water lilies.

According to Mrs. Villar “We can do it if we want to”, she also explained that there are lots of improvements needed for next year's festival like the cheering squads should train hard and they were also planning to conceptualize a river cruise in Las Piñas. Mrs. Villar also mentioned that “cleaning a river is really a challenge and the Las Piñas was praised for cleaning the river.” It is indeed one of the good efforts that the Villar Foundation have done to Las Piñas and to its communities.

This festivity is really good in promoting local tourism and locally made products. Other places should also strive to do the same for the future generation. Just what Mrs. Villar said “we can do it if we want to”.

Do you want to visit this festivity next year? If you're planning to, just visit the Villar Foundation website to see the details of their programs and activities.

Rain Or Shine, Run United 2 Go!

10:53:00 PM

Another great running event organized by Unilab Active Health and RunRio Inc., The Run United 2. It is the second leg of the trilogy and runners who've joined the first run would have already completed two thirds of the pie medal.

Early dawn of June 17, 2012 came a bed weather. As much as I wanted to stay in bed and curled under the sheet, duty calls, plus I wanted to see this well anticipated running event. Rain starts to shower when I left the house, then it pours a bit harder while travelling off to SM Mall of Asia.

The Start and Finish Line
The road was wet and the whole venue were still dripping with rain water. Though the weather was not good, still, runners are coming in and piling up for this running event. Some were still with sleepy eyes and some are already eager to run. It was around past 5 AM when runners started looking for their category areas. Great that the whole venue are well mapped out with signs and banners to easily locate category areas.

Runners looking for their category area.
Runners getting ready for the run'

Few minutes before 5:30 AM, runners for the 10K Category run started to gather in the starting line and they were given a little warm up and some few reminders before the run. Then the gun fire was shot. Bang! And they're off.  Few minutes after, it was time for the 5K Category run.  Everyone lined up in front of the starting line and as a routine runners need to get warmed up before engaging to a run.  Everyone pump up their joints and ligaments with the beat of the music.  Runners settled and waited.  Then the much awaited gun shot fired! The 5K Category run has most number of participants which took time before the area was cleared.  As much as I wanted to join the run, I'm well aware that I wouldn't catch up with the fastest runner and I might not catch the winners crossing the finish line. So, I've stayed behind and waited.

It's the right decision to stay behind and waited because just a few minutes after they've been off to run, the fastest runner for the 10K Category run was already visible from the finish line. Few more seconds and he reached the finish line. Followed by the fastest runner from the 5K Category.  Two of the 5K Category runner were Filipinos and the other one is a foreigner.  They are just minutes away from each other.  Panting for their breath, marshals placed an ID tag on them to indicate that they were the top three fastest runner for the 5K Category Run.  Top three fastest female runner for the 5K Category run were also given an ID tag for proper distinction.  Few more minutes and most of the runners already crossed the finish line, mostly are 5K Category runners.   Different runners, different styles and different tricks to attract attention but they all have one common goal... to cross that finish line.

Runners finishing one by one.

Great way to celebrate FATHER'S DAY with Dad!
Since the 5K Category run has the most number of participants, runners built a traffic in getting their loot bags.  Thanks to the marshals it was immediately addressed and avoided longer build up of traffic.  Some of the runners who runs the 5K Category is the Father and Son tandem (see the picture above) in which the son is proudly wrote "MY DAD" and a line pointing to his father on his chest.  He sure was aware of the Father's Day.

After covering the runs it was time to roam around the event area. Get to try different facilities and brand booths. Most of the brand booths were engaging enough for the runners, kids and parents. It is indeed a great place to enjoy by the whole family, especially in a very good weather. While doing round ups with the booths I was able to interview different runners and get their insights about the entire event. Three of whom I've interviewed were first timers who take down the challenge of running the 5K Category run and two were a couple who happens to be celebrating their wedding anniversary that day. They enjoyed the run and they assured that they'll be joining again on the next run. I was able to interview other runners who have joined the first leg and they were very happy to have completed the second leg and they are looking forward for the next leg of the run. All of them agreed that it was a great running event, though there were some recommendations raised. Some of the recommendations were:
  • To have more tables and staff in providing loot bags and giveaways for the runners.
  • To have more kilometer marker.

John, first time to join a run.
Sweet couple, first time to join a run.
After an hour of booth hopping and interviews it was time for the announcements of winners. The first few awarding was enjoined by Zoren Legazpi and Carmina Villaroel together with their kids. Trophies, medals, and other prizes were given to the winners. In between of the awarding, participants for the Cheerdance Competition does their routine. Here are the winners of Run United 2 in different categories.

Great that the weather cooperated with the event which enables the runners and organizers (Unilab Active Health and Ranrio Inc.) to make the entire activity a success. What I like about the event is the whole shebangs. They were able to grasp the interests of runners not only during the run but also after. The thirst are not only quench but also the hunger for fun and exciting activities.
