Charo Santos and Dingdong Dantes Explore a Love Beyond Labels in “Only We Know”

6/07/2025 05:50:00 AM

Two people. One connection. A story only they understand.

That’s the central thread in the upcoming romantic drama Only We Know, starring screen veterans Charo Santos and Dingdong Dantes. The film opens in cinemas nationwide on June 11, bringing with it a quietly powerful tale that navigates the undefined spaces of human relationships.

Directed and written by Irene Emma Villamor, known for hits like Meet Me in St. Gallen and Sid and Aya, the film dissects labels, age gaps, and expectations. In Only We Know, the connection between Betty and Ryan doesn’t need to be named but only understood.

The title draws from a moment captured on the film’s poster: Betty and Ryan in a quiet, intense conversation, smiling as if sharing an inside joke. It’s that kind of bond, intimate, undefined, and deeply personal, that shapes the film’s core message.

Betty, played by Charo Santos, is a retired English teacher finding her rhythm in life after work. Ryan, portrayed by Dingdong Dantes, is a grieving engineer still haunted by the sudden loss of his wife. They meet by chance and, through shared moments and emotional healing, form a connection neither of them expected.

“It is a story about love, however you want to define it,” Santos shared during a press event. “It’s only Betty and Ryan who can define the beautiful kind of relationship that they have.”

The film steers clear of conventional romance formulas. While early thought and buzz focused on the “older woman, younger man” pairing, both the stars and the director insist the story digs deeper than stereotypes. “Ang interesting sa pelikula na ito ay babasagin nito ang kahulugan ng label,” Dantes said.

Villamor revealed the idea of the pairing surfaced seven years ago and took shape through multiple rewrites. The pandemic reshaped not just the storyline but the perspective from which the narrative is told. “The good thing was that the script was distilled to its very essence,” she said.

Shot in just 13 days, the film benefited from a chronological shooting schedule, allowing the chemistry between the leads to grow naturally. Despite being first-time co-stars, Santos and Dantes built a rapport on and off camera that director Villamor described as “10 out of 10.”

Their chemistry is visible in the trailer’s now-viral “great love” moment, where Betty wonders if we only ever get one true love in a lifetime. It's a question that lingers throughout the film, challenging both characters, and viewers, to think about how they define love and companionship.

In one scene, Betty muses on the beauty of routine, a detail that anchors the emotional realism of their relationship. They shop for groceries, drink together, and swap stories, are just some of the ordinary moments made extraordinary by the intimacy they build.

The supporting cast includes Shamaine Buencamino, Joel Saracho, Max Collins, Al Tantay, and Soliman Cruz, adding depth to Betty and Ryan’s world. One dinner scene sees Tantay’s character question Ryan’s intentions, a reminder that not everyone understands a bond that exists outside the lines.

In a world full of noise, Only We Know offers a soft yet resounding reminder: sometimes, the most meaningful relationships are the ones that don’t need explanation. Just understanding.

Catch Only We Know in cinemas starting June 11 and witness a love story that’s as thoughtful as it is tender, one that invites you to feel, not define.

The Living Tombstone to Perform Live in Manila

4/30/2025 09:58:00 PM

Electronic music duo The Living Tombstone is set to perform in Manila on July 8, 2025, at the New Frontier Theater. The show is presented by Ovation Productions, with Blast TV serving as the official media partner.

The act, composed of Yoav Landau and Sam Haft, has become a major name in online music and geek culture, thanks to its signature blend of electronic beats, catchy hooks, and genre-defying compositions. The group boasts more than 8 million subscribers on YouTube and over 70 billion streams across digital platforms.

The upcoming Manila concert follows a successful, sold-out North American tour in 2024.

Best known for their viral track Five Nights at Freddy’s, which reached No. 4 on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic chart and was featured in the credits of a Blumhouse and NBC Universal film adaptation, The Living Tombstone has built a loyal fanbase in the intersection of gaming, animation, and music.

Landau, who performs as the character “zero_one” onstage, founded the project over a decade ago while growing up in Israel, using music as a creative outlet and a way to connect with global fandom communities. Haft, a former TV and film writer, joined as vocalist and lyricist in 2017.

“They disproved the rule that you can’t just put your music out there and expect people to find it,” said the group’s manager, David Boxenbaum, co-founder of Octone Records. “They did exactly that—and millions did.”

Boxenbaum discovered the duo during his time at Avex, a Japanese entertainment company, where they collaborated on a TV project. He later encouraged the team to develop their debut album zero_one, which was met with critical and fan acclaim.

The duo has since expanded into gaming and animation projects, including the indie horror game In Sound Mind, which received positive reviews and a “overwhelmingly positive” rating on Steam. They also developed an animated series pilot, Rock N Rumble, and a companion video game, AudioClash: Battle of the Bands, currently in beta.

Now signed to 10K Projects, The Living Tombstone is preparing to release its sophomore album, Rust, in 2025, produced by CJ Baran (Panic! At the Disco, COIN, One OK Rock). Haft describes the new album as “an exploration of rebellion, dystopia, and the hope of building a better future.”

Tickets for the Manila concert are priced at PHP5,000 for VIP, PHP3,500 for Loge, and PHP2,500 for Balcony, excluding ticketing charges. Tickets will be available at ticketnet.com.ph, with artist presale starting April 30 and general sales beginning May 2.

‘The Kingdom’: A Metro Manila Film Festival Entry That Reimagines Philippine History

3/15/2025 11:05:00 PM

Here's my late review of the MMFF entry "The Kingdom"

What If History Took a Different Turn?

The Kingdom, one of this year’s standout entries in the Metro Manila Film Festival, dares to explore an intriguing question: What if the Philippines had never been colonized? The film presents an alternative reality where the country remained under the rule of pre-colonial leaders—Lakans and Rajahs—across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

With a powerhouse cast led by Vic Sotto, The Kingdom transports audiences into a visually striking world that reimagines the nation’s cultural roots. It breathes life into long-forgotten traditions—gestures like pagmamano (a sign of respect for elders), ritual handwashing before meals, the influential role of babaylan (spiritual leaders), and pagtutunggali, a form of combat used to settle disputes.

The Cast and their Roles

The movie is indeed a powerhouse cast, with each actor bringing their character to life in an interesting way. Here are the actors and their played characters. In addition is some of their quotable lines.

Vic Sotto - Lakan Makisig Nandula
"Sa tanda kong ito, hindi pa rin ako sanay sa bigat ng ginto sa'king ulo."

Piolo Pascual - Sulo/ Sulayman Tagum
"Mahirap makita ang katotohanan kapag nasa itaas."

Sue Ramirez - Dayang Lualhati Nandula
"Ngiti ang kabilang mukha ng pighati."

Sid Lucero - Magat Bagwis Nandula
"Magkabangga man tayo ng paniniwala, lahat tayo kung hindi man kapatid, anak."

Cristine Reyes - Dayang Matimyas Nandula
"Balang araw, ipapahamak ka ng bulag mong katapatan."

Nico Antonio - Tarek
Iza Calzado - Rosa
arthur acuña - Carpio
Ruby Ruiz - Silayan Hil-um
Zion cruz - Felipe

The Portrayal, the Picture, and What Stands Out

Throughout past Metro Manila Film Festivals, Vic Sotto has been a staple in the comedy genre, rarely venturing into other territories. This time, however, he takes on a different challenge. Despite aging gracefully, his performance remains top-notch, bringing depth to his character. Of course, true to form, he still manages to slip in a few well-timed comedic lines—effortlessly and naturally.

Sue Ramirez delivers a convincing portrayal of a Dayang betrothed to a foreign prince. Her performance, much like her previous roles, is simple, sincere, and engaging. She brings an air of authenticity that makes her character believable and relatable.

Piolo Pascual steps into the role of Sulo (Sulayman Tagum), a character shrouded in mystery and consumed by deep-seated rage. He embodies the role with intensity, reminiscent of his performances in Dekada ‘70 and other films that explore similar themes of anger and inner turmoil. His presence alone adds weight to the film’s narrative.

Cristine Reyes takes on a particularly challenging role, balancing two contrasting personalities—an angelic, dutiful daughter seeking her father’s approval and an ambitious, power-hungry woman who believes she is destined for the throne. Her performance keeps the audience intrigued, making us wonder what more she has to offer in future roles.

The supporting cast also deserves recognition, as each actor brings authenticity and energy to their respective characters, contributing to the film’s immersive atmosphere.

If there’s one aspect where the film could have done more, it’s in executing large-scale battle scenes. The grandeur of war sequences could have been better managed, with more dynamic camera angles and choreography to elevate the intensity of these moments.

A Deep Dive into Forgotten Traditions

One of the film’s greatest strengths is its dedication to reviving ancient Filipino customs. It reminds viewers how deeply our ancestors valued respect, honor, and community. Even the intricacies of royal succession and burial rites are carefully depicted, offering a glimpse of a heritage that could have evolved differently without foreign intervention.

However, while The Kingdom excels in storytelling and cultural representation, its fight choreography could have been more gripping. The action sequences, though pivotal to the plot, sometimes lack the intensity expected of epic battle scenes. Despite this, the film’s exploration of socio-political themes remains its strongest asset.

Themes That Resonate Today

Although set in a fictional pre-colonial era, The Kingdom subtly mirrors modern Philippine society. The film tackles themes that remain relevant today:

Power Struggles – The battle for control among leaders reflects the political rivalries that still shape the nation.
Sibling Rivalry – The tension between royal heirs vying for power is a reminder of family disputes over authority and inheritance.
Class Divide – The stark contrast between the elite and the common folk highlights social inequalities that persist to this day.
Corruption – Even in an imagined ancient society, the ruling class struggles with corruption, making the story feel all too familiar.
Tradition vs. Reform – The Lakan’s internal battle between upholding traditions and embracing change echoes today’s cultural debates.
Family and Honor – At its core, the film underscores the Filipino values of dignity, honor, and loyalty to family, even in the face of adversity.

A Reflection on What Could Have Been

The Kingdom challenges audiences to consider an alternate history. How would the Philippines have developed without colonization? Would its people have forged a stronger, uninterrupted cultural identity? The film doesn’t provide definitive answers, but it sparks meaningful reflection.

Thoughts About the Whole Film

The film may not be as perfect as most of us expects based on western big film companies, The Kingdom is a compelling blend of historical speculation and cultural appreciation. It doesn’t just entertain—it educates and inspires. By reimagining the country’s past, the film offers a fresh perspective on what it means to be Filipino.

For those eager to explore an alternate history of the Philippines, The Kingdom is a must-watch. It reignites pride in pre-colonial traditions and reminds us that our identity is shaped as much by what we have lost as by what we still hold dear.

Catch The Kingdom in theaters during the Metro Manila Film Festival, and immerse yourself in a world of what-ifs and what-could-have-beens.
