SM Foundation provides life-saving aid to earthquake-ravaged communities in Turkey and Syria

7:55:00 AM

SM Foundation Inc. (SMFI) has extended a helping hand to Türkiye and Syria, two countries that were hit by devastating earthquakes. On February 27, 2023, SMFI sent aid through the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) to assist with relief efforts.

The aid was in the form of 200 units of gasoline generators, which were handed over to the PRC by SM Foundation Health and Medical Programs Executive Director Connie Angeles. These generators will provide power to the quake-stricken areas and will help to ensure that essential services, such as hospitals and emergency response centers, are able to operate.

In addition to the generators, SM Foundation also donated Php5 million to assist with the needs of earthquake victims. This contribution will go towards providing food, water, shelter, and medical supplies to those affected by the disaster.

The earthquakes that hit Türkiye and Syria were both extremely powerful. The first earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.8, struck southeast Türkiye and northwest Syria, causing widespread damage and loss of life. This was followed by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake that hit southern Türkiye, leading to additional casualties and destruction.

SM Foundation's aid is an important gesture of solidarity with the people of Türkiye and Syria during this difficult time. The foundation has a long-standing commitment to supporting social good initiatives, and its efforts to provide assistance in the wake of natural disasters are just one example of its commitment to making a positive impact in the world.

Shawarma Shack Provides Help For the Victims of Taal Volcano

8:03:00 PM

The notable buy one take one shawarma store and one of the easiest access to Middle Eastern food, Shawarma Shack, made an effort to visit the affected communities of the recent Taal Volcano eruption, particularly those in Tanauan City, Batangas. The company donated bottled water and relief goods to over 1,000 families in different areas.

This good effort came from the heart of Shawarma Shack founder Walther Buenavista's wife, Patricia Buenavista, who spent her early childhood in Tanauan City. It was disclosed that she has relatives residing in the area when the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised alert level 4 for Taal Volcano on January 12, 2020.

Multiple houses and livelihoods were destroyed since the volcano started erupting, forcing residents within the 14-kilometer radius from the main crater to immediately evacuate. This is when the bayanihan evidently blossomed among Filipinos—everyone, even in their own little way, lent a helping hand.

Shawarma Shack visited and gave aid to 170 families relocated to La Consolation College, 70 families at Daughters of Mary Immaculate School, 89 families at Tanauan Local Government Unit Evacuation Center, 120 families at Tapia Elementary School in Barangay Trapiche, 98 families at Jesus is Lord Christian School, 45 families at Tanauan City College, 250 families at Pamahalaang Sentral ng Hilagang Tanauan, 98 families at Ulango Elementary School, and 92 families at Pantay Bata Elementary School.

Tanauan City Vice Mayor Atty. Herminigildo "Jun-jun" G. Trinidad assisted the Buenavista family along with other Shawarma Shack volunteers during this relief operation.
