Mayonnaise culminates 20th anniversary with a concert at the QC Circle

6:20:00 PM

Filipino alternative rock band Mayonnaise wraps up the celebration of their 20th anniversary in the Philippine music scene with a massive concert on May 20, 2023, at the QC Circle, from 5pm onwards. Dubbed MAYO 20: The Finale, the anniversary concert marks the legacy of Mayonnaise as one of the most important Filipino bands of their time, producing remarkable hits that resonate with listeners of all ages and backgrounds.

MAYO 20: The Finale serves as the culminating event in a series of shows that aim to give back to the music fans who have supported the band since day one.

“I’m honestly surprised that we’ve made it this far,” Mayonnaise frontman Monty Macalino admits. “MAYO 20: The Finale is more than just a celebration of longevity and all the great things that have happened to us. We want to give our fans what they truly deserve, and we want to return the favor by going all out with our performance. Presented by Yellow Room Music and Killer Bear, and supported by Minsan Studios and Araw Sa Gabi, the finale show will feature a long set by Mayonnaise themselves, with the special participation of their
music industry peers such as Barbie Almalbis, Champ Lui Pio of Hale, Sud Ballecer (Sud), Argee Guerrero (I Belong To The Zoo), and Josh Villena (Autotelic).

"Experience JR De Guzman's Music and Comedy Fusion in the "Later That Evening" Show"

7:47:00 AM

On June 3 (Friday) at 7 pm, MYX Global will present "Later That Evening," a comedic and musical performance by JR De Guzman, an internationally acclaimed comedian who was recently recognized as one of Variety's 10 Comics to Watch in 2022. The event will take place at The Theatre at Solaire, promising an evening filled with humor and entertainment.

One of the most effective way to engage the audience is music and humor. So if you're fond of this two, well you can actually enjoy both in JR De Guzman's show.

Joining the “StandUp NBC” 2016 winner are his fellow Filipino comedians Red Ollero and Ryan Puno for the opening acts.

Ryan, a comic-writer-actor-director who started the online comedy channel Solid OK, is a headliner of Comedy Manila. He was also featured in “Comedy Central’s Stand-Up, Asia!” alongside JR.

Red has been doing stand-up shows for 16 years and has led sold-out shows in the Music Museum, PMC Spotlight Blackbox Theater, and Samsung Performing Arts Theater. He has also opened for international comedy stars like Jo Koy.

JR is “super excited” to reunite with Ryan and Red whom he has worked with previously in stand-up shows almost a decade ago.

“Later That Evening” is JR’s hit show that has been on tour across the United States and will be on its first-ever Asian leg next month. Audiences love JR’s knack for musical comedy while he talks about his experiences as a Filipino growing up in America and his take on racism. Now, he is ready to bring all the fun to the Philippines.

In MYX’s virtual media conference for “Later That Evening,” JR shared one of his favorite jokes that represent his Filipino upbringing but at the same time seem relatable to most audiences.

“I just talk about how I learned how to sing and play music in the church cause my grandma took me to church like twice a day growing up,” he jested. "Everyone kind of relates to having sort of strict, conservative grandparents. Like every problem you have they tell you to pray.”

The fast-rising comedian also said that there is no limit to the topic that he would consider for his shows. “There is not really anything that I wouldn’t touch if I could make it funny. If it’s a topic that I genuinely think I can have a funny perspective on then I would do it,” he affirmed.

Born in the Philippines and raised in California, JR was also named ‘New Face’ in “Just for Laughs 2017” and got featured in the Netflix special “The Comedy Lineup” and Comedy Central’s “Kevin Hart Presents: Hart of the City.” He also previously released an album called “Dual Citizen.”

The Manila leg of “Later That Evening” was made possible by MYX, which advocates for Asian music and is on a mission to create a culture that showcases Filipino and Asian talent on a global scale.

Be part of JR’s “Later That Evening” one-night show happening at the Theatre at Solaire on June 3 (Saturday) at 7 pm. Get ready to immerse yourself in a divine musical experience as WATERWALK RECORDS releases their new worship compilation album, "Sambahan".

7:27:00 AM

Music label WATERWALK RECORDS has recently unveiled a new compilation album aimed at promoting faith-based entertainment artists to the modern streaming audience. The album is packed with powerful declarations of love, worship, and faith.

Entitled SAMBAHAN, is a new record that boasts 11 awe-inspiring tracks that showcase the talents of various worship leaders from different Christian churches and congregations.

SAMBAHAN is more than just an album; it's a project that embodies the spirit of collaboration and connection. The record features original Tagalog worship songs, written and composed by members of the KONEKOLAB Worship fellowship - a group of church-based songwriters. The tracks are then performed and interpreted by worship leaders, creating a diverse and dynamic collection of music.

Jungee Marcelo, the main producer and A&R of the label responsible for SAMBAHAN, describes the project as a product of the KONEKOLAB "worship" endeavor. “SAMBAHAN is a compilation of original Tagalog worship songs written and composed via the KONEKOLAB Worship fellowship of Church-based songwriters, and interpreted by worship leaders.”

“The concept was developed within the KONEKOLAB ‘worship’ endeavor —- a convening of like-minded music artists who ‘connect and collaborate’ in an unconventional lab setting,” Jungee added.

SAMBAHAN is not only a celebration of music but also a celebration of the power of faith and community. It's a reminder that no matter our backgrounds or beliefs, we can come together to create something beautiful and inspiring. With its uplifting lyrics and dynamic arrangements, SAMBAHAN is a must-listen for fans of Christian music and beyond.

According to Marcelo, the songs were pitched to WATERWALK Records, and eventually got the greenlight of the executives. He considers the project a blessing as it is created for the sole purpose of glorifying the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

He reveals, “The plan is to release one song every week in a compilation aptly entitled SAMBAHAN. Initially, it was dubbed as ‘Worship’ but Sony Music Philippines head Roslyn Pineda thought it was better to come up with a project title in Filipino since all the songs are in the local lingo. We ended up with the nomenclature ‘SAMBAHAN’ which in essence has three distinct context definitions: a. act of worship, b. communal worship, liturgy, c. a place of worship.”

Marcelo, who also happens to be the founder of KONEKOLAB, narrates that SAMBAHAN initially started when he posted an invitation to a group of grassroots, Church-based songwriters back in December 2022 for a collaborative take on a worship song. What was initially a one-time endeavor grew into more work being submitted by participants in the pool, with Marcelo having to filter the choices down to forty participants. The Lord, as Marcelo recounts, provisionally led him to selecting 40 potential songwriters and divide them into 10 teams, 4 per team.

“The late evenings and early mornings of December were invested in daily online songwriting collab-turned-mentoring sessions, a team at a time, rotating in shifts,” he shares enthusiastically. “By the end of December, the songs were finally completed --- praise God for His wisdom and enabling.”

Containing music styles that naturally complement each individual and communal preferences, SAMBAHAN features themes that adhere to the overall concept of worship. The songs were produced by Jungee Marcelo himself, and were arranged with each musician providing personal inputs to enhance the overall sound texture of the material, resulting into a wonderfully crafted piece of worship offering.

Check out the SAMBAHAN Tracklist:

Every day is Earth Day at SM Supermalls! 1700 children celebrate Earth Day at SM malls nationwide

1:42:00 PM

SM Supermalls, in collaboration with its corporate social responsibility arm, SM Cares, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), local government units and partner schools and organizations joined the rest of the world in celebrating Earth Day at SM malls nationwide on April 22, 2023.

With the theme "Invest In Our Planet, Invest In Our Youth," SM Supermalls and SM Cares lined up various activities that aimed to raise awareness among children and their families about the importance of coming together across various sectors to take care of the environment. SM malls nationwide simultaneously held relevant and impactful celebrations with activities such as Children’s Storytelling, Coloring, and Sustainability Tours, gathering 1700 children and 350 employee volunteers. These activities aimed to encourage everyone in the family, particularly the young ones, to protect and respect Mother Earth.

Earth Day is an annual celebration led by the Earth Day Network that puts the spotlight on issues that are affecting the environment. First held in 1970, Earth Day was the result of a need for a unified response against various environmental problems like pollution and resource depletion. Today, the event is considered the biggest environmental movement in the world, with millions joining celebrations every year.

Children learn about how to protect the environment individually and as a community through art, storytelling and a Sustainability tour around SM malls

“At SM, every day is Earth Day. However, today we are reminded of our responsibility to protect the planet we live in. We believe that we must all come together and take the necessary steps against this climate crisis and accelerate a greener and more equitable future for everyone,” shared Ms. Liza B. Silerio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and SM Cares Program Director for the Environment.

SM Supermalls featured the art of multi-awarded Filipino artist, sculptor and illustrator, Manuel Baldemor. His works depict the rich cultural aspects of the Philippines and can be found in multiple institutions worldwide. His drawings and Earth Day poem inspired the Earth Day program at SM, reflecting a long-time partnership on SM Cares programs for the environment, starting with his design of SM’s first eco bags in 2007.

The storytelling activity featured a special Earth Day story based on Baldemor’s artworks. The story reflected simple ways children can participate in living sustainably on their own and with their families. Meanwhile, kids and kids-at-heart were welcomed at the coloring activity section. Participants were given art materials and a selection of Baldemor's drawings to color in. Malls used recycled materials in designing the activity areas.

And to cap off the celebration, a sustainability tour was held wherein everyone participated in a guided tour to one or more of the mall’s eco-friendly facilities such as the EV charging stations, water recycling treatment plants, waste segregation bins, Plastic Waste Collection booths, E-waste Collection bins and various bicycle amenities.

Filipino artist Manuel Baldemor’s artistic contribution provide inspiration for the Earth Day program. Joining him at SM City Fairview were DENR NCR Director Mr. Manuel T. Escasura; Quezon City Vice Mayor, Honorable Gian Sotto; Ms. Andrea Villaroman, Head of the Quezon City Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability Department, Planet CORA’s Partnerships Director, Cat Trivino and SM Supermalls executives.

To highlight the role of collaborating with the public sector in driving environmental programs forward, SM City Fairview hosted the DENR Gawad Taga-ilog Awards photo exhibit, which recognized winning local government units who are leading in protecting Metro Manila’s waterways. The agency also further provided 800 tree seedlings to participants and customers through a DENR Community Pan-TREE to encourage at SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia, SM North EDSA, SM City Fairview, SM City Novaliches, SM City Marikina, SM City East Ortigas and SM Southmall.

The Quezon City Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability Department also promoted the city’s Trash to Cashback program to encourage its citizens to be Eco Warriors and promote recycling.

Youth participants join forces with SM Supermalls for a sustainable future.

The Earth Day celebration is just one of the numerous ways that SM is promoting sustainable living among Filipinos, and the company has other programs aimed at helping care for the environment. These are the Trash to Cash Recycling Market held every first Friday and Saturday of the month; daily water recycling systems, and environmental campaigns such as the Green Film Festival, Green Retail Agenda, and the International Coastal Cleanup Drive, just to name a few.

SM Cares is the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Prime Holdings, responsible for initiatives that promote sustainability and the development of the community. SM Cares’ advocacies include programs on Women and Breastfeeding Mothers, Persons with Disabilities, Senior Citizens, and Children and Youth, as well as the Bike-Friendly SM initiative, in addition to its Programs on Environment.

It's not bad to think of the things that could possibly be an intriguing model for Metro Manila, but of course there are basis that ought us to think these kind of ideas.

Metro Manila is comprised of 16 cities and 1 municipality - is the economic, political, and cultural capital.

Metro Manila’s forecast of becoming a global power city is challenged by the consequences of rapid urbanization. The UN-Habitat lists the effects of climate change, natural disasters that hamper urban infrastructures and city competitiveness, unequal livability, job creation, and poverty reduction.

Is there a way out of Metro Manila’s challenges? Architect and urban designer Chintan Raveshia, and urban planner and sustainability consultant Tony Chan of Singapore-based Arup emphasize urban development should also consider people’s aspirations, its changing needs and expectations, and the national identity of the residents.

Finding the identity of the city

Raveshia inspires responsible stakeholders to ask themselves first the most fundamental question: “What’s the identity of the city and how do we make its residents proud?”

He quips, “Singapore, a city that is high on everyone’s liveability list, is also working with citizens and grass roots organizations to inculcate a sense of ‘lovability’ for the city. This helps to strengthen the societal bond, increase equity, improve community safety, and exude pride and a feeling of ownership of the city amongst the residents. The balance of liveability, efficiency, and lovability paves the way for a true success of our cities in this climate emergency era”.

For his part, Chan believes that a successful sustainable urban development goes hand in hand with the capability to enhance people’s quality of life. “We must develop and harness models of development that have low-carbon targets, which are also of a human scale, thriving and inclusive; models that are also just, secured and enhances the quality of life for all its residents. In addition, we should look at creative ways to increase local citizen participation as well as new technologies or products that can support the overarching vision and development objectives”, says Chan.

Melbourne is considered by many experts as one of the most liveable cities for the past decade.

If Singapore reclaims lands for more affordable housing and increased integrated city developments and Melbourne builds accessible green spaces to promote social interaction, what plans would best fit Metro Manila’s sustainable and livable future while maintaining its identity? Here are five urban development aspirations Filipinos hope for the country’s main political and economic hub.

1. Accessibility across all social classes
While Metro Manila is the Philippines’ major economic driver – accounting for 32% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) – it’s often challenged in sustaining accessible living conditions for residents across all social classes. UK-based The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) ranked Metro Manila 105th out of 139 cities in the Global Liveability Index 2022. The increasing population density in Metro Manila has resulted in some inconveniences in daily conditions like vehicular traffic situations, least green open spaces, high carbon footprint, inaccessibility to affordable housing, and unequal income opportunities.

Urban planners and developers suggest mixed-use planning in the metropolis and coastal developments because they are crucial to achieving the 15-minute concept. Here, residents across all walks of life are encouraged to live a healthy, affordable, and sustainable lifestyle because residential, commercial, and office spaces are integrated within a single development.

2. Open green spaces for a healthy and sustainable living environment

Despite land scarcity, Singapore manages to be one of the greenest cities in the world with over 400 parks, more than 3,300 hectares of nature reserve, and over 300 kilometers of park connector network.

Studies shows that Metro Manila has only 5 square meters of green space available per person, this number is well below the 9 square meters set by the World Health Organization.COVID-19 had the entire world reassess their health conditions, lifestyle practices, and environmental situations. The impact was even more drastic in Metro Manila due to population density, crowded space, and insufficient parks and open areas.

Aside from improving air quality and enhancing biodiversity, green spaces also moderate temperatures during the warm season.

3. Enhancing Human health and wellbeing
Cities with sufficient healthcare facilities, access to health coverage, and infrastructures that enhance well-being and promote a healthy lifestyle, produce prosperous societies.

The way cities are planned, designed, and executed has a crucial impact on how people live as it presents opportunities and effects on their lifestyles and overall well-being. While there is evident progress in Metro Manila’s health sector, rapid urbanization continues to pose risks in communities due to challenges in overcrowded neighborhoods, vehicular emissions, heavy traffic, pollution, and flood-prone areas.

4. Resilient community
Resilience is the capacity of individuals, communities, and systems to adapt, survive, and grow in the face of stress and shocks, and even transform when conditions require it. Relevant dimensions under the City Resilience Index (https://www.cityresilienceindex.org) by the Rockefeller Foundation & Arup, other dimensions include Health & Well Being, Economy & Society, Infrastructure & Environment as well as Leadership & Strategy

As Philippines and Manila grows, we face a dual challenge of adapting to climate change and the need to alter development strategies that are increasingly contributing to global warming. Philippines is among the top 10 countries in the world most affected by climate change in the past 20 years, according to the Global Climate Risk Index As an archipelago, impacts resulting from climate change are immense. In addition, metro Manila’s safety and resilience are endangered by various natural disasters.

Natural disasters persist every season due to our geographical location.

Well-planned and executed urban designs have the power to build safe and resilient communities in Metro Manila. Infrastructures like proper bike lanes and walkable streets ensure residents’ safety, accessibility, and comfort, whereas science and technology-based solutions that can build flexible structures, multi-use systems, and technologies can help residents adapt and prepare for changing conditions.

5. Global and competitive city

In 2022, Singapore is placed 3rd in the World Competitiveness Ranking – the small country out of Asia even placed 1st in 2019 and 2020.

Metro Manila is one of Asia’s premier regions. As the country’s engine growth driver, it has growing investments in infrastructures and multitudes of business investments and developments.

The metropolis’ rising potential can further step up by following global models like Singapore, Melbourne, and Hong Kong which created several integrated cities and coastal developments that ushered in a vibrant economy and paved for a better urban lifestyle. These visions create an avenue to further increase opportunities for jobs, better education, better lifestyle, and bustling economic activities.

These can contribute to the Philippines’ national and local economies by driving tourism and infrastructure development while also creating equitable and inclusive communities. These, in turn, create a wider room of opportunities and, therefore, attracts more talent.

Building inclusive and sustainable growth centers
When all stakeholders are listened to and addressed, communities will be energized when introduced to well-designed, master-planned and implemented developments. This will result to a lasting impact on Metro Manila’s future and its residents because it fosters more inclusive growth and makes the urban landscape an extension of their home.

When a city embraces its history, celebrates its milestones, innovates and adopts for the future, and most importantly, nurtures its residents and responds to their aspirations – it is a city working toward competitiveness and unlocking future potential.

How about you? What would you aspire your city to be?

From Repurposing to Renewable Energy: How Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PCPPI) is Championing Sustainable Living at Home and in Communities

9:41:00 PM

The essence and foundation of sustainability starts at home, as each and every household decision has the power and potential to impact the environment and the communities around us. As a company that supports the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PCPPI) advocates for the Filipino people to be more conscientious in their consumption and management of precious resources such as water, energy, and oil.

The exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country, PCPPI reaffirms its sustainability commitments ahead of Earth Day, which is observed worldwide on April 22. According to Frederick D. Ong, PCPPI president and chief executive officer, adopting sustainable lifestyle habits affects people and planet for the better. “The daily decisions we make can help reduce household waste, save expenses, and improve our well-being. Living ‘sustainably’ does not have to be complex, as we can all start with the choices we make at home,” he said.

Re-use and repurpose.
It often takes a fresh perspective to see our everyday tasks differently. One of the ways to reduce household waste is through repurposing old items, like plastic water bottles which may be transformed into plant holders or vases. Used boxes can also be turned into organizers, while brown paper bags can be used as craft paper for school projects.

Meal planning.
Apart from selecting healthier food options from the market or grocery, meal planning has the added benefit of consuming just the right amount of food—thereby cutting down on excess and food waste. Planning meals ahead of time also helps manage one’s budget, as well as electricity costs.

Unplug when not in use.
Turning off that are not in use, using enough water to wash hands, or unplugging fully charged devices are some good practices to manage resource consumption at home. These also help maintain the health of electrical appliances, helping them run properly for longer.

Go digital, go paperless.
One of the shifts accelerated during the community lockdowns was the move towards paperless transactions. Mail and bills are now accessed electronically, minimizing the need to consume paper. With further advances in technology, the possibilities are endless with how the world can help preserve and protect trees.

As PCPPI supports the practice of these sustainable practices, the organization continues to work on its own sustainability initiatives that demonstrate its long-term commitment towards care respect for the environment.

PCPPI aims to reduce the use of virgin plastic and reach 100% recyclable packaging. The company continues to expand its efforts in lightweighting and exploring alternative packaging sources. Since early 2021, PCPPI has also transitioned to renewable energy use to supply the energy requirements of its plants. Solar panels are installed in its Batangas, Cebu, and Davao manufacturing facilities.

In line with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) Adopt-an-Estero Program, PCPPI has organized clean-up drives near bodies of water in the communities where it operates. PCPPI has adopted key waterways across the country, including those in San Fernando, Iloilo, Bacolod, Davao, Cebu, and Zamboanga. Partnerships with agencies like the Laguna Lake Development Authority allow PCPPI to regularly meet with other community stakeholders on how to best address environmental concerns and develop innovative ways to protect local ecosystems.

PCPPI is the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country. It distributes well-loved brands such as Pepsi-Cola, Mountain Dew, 7-Up, Mirinda, Mug, Gatorade, Sting, Tropicana, Lipton Iced Tea, Milkis, Chum Churum Soonhari, and Premier.
