As part of the SM Green Movement, the SM Foundation has recently introduced a rainwater harvesting arrangement at the Brgy. Irawan Birthing Facility located in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. This undertaking is aligned with their objective to bolster environmental preservation efforts and secure the well-being of upcoming generations.

In a concerted endeavor to amplify water preservation and adept administration within the premises, the ingenious contrivance adeptly gathers rainwater coursing down from the rooftop and conduits. Skillfully navigating its course through meticulously crafted vinyl-coated mesh filters, this ingenious system stands as a vigilant sentinel, unwaveringly upholding the sanctity of the water's quality. A capacious reservoir boasting an impressive 800-liter capacity stands as a testament to this orchestrated effort, earmarking the harvested water to satiate the establishment's non-potable demands with elegance and efficacy. From the nurturing caress bestowed upon verdant flora to the meticulous cleansing rituals, and even to the discrete yet essential act of toilet flushing, every droplet derived from this meticulous process serves a noble purpose, epitomizing the fusion of ingenuity and responsibility.

Faucets connected to the rainwater catchment are duly marked to help guide the community.

The rainwater harvesting facility also operates without electricity and features labeled faucets for intuitive recycled water use. Midwife Narcisa Jagmis, who leads the said birthing facility, said that the facility will help them reduce their reliance on the city’s water supply systems.

“Mahalagang hindi kami nawawalan ng tubig sa center, lalo na po pag nagsimula kaming magoperate bilang birthing clinic. Ngunit minsan po, walang dumadaloy na tubig at wala kaming mapagkukunan,” Jagmis shared.

“Kaya napaka laking tulog po ng natural na tubig mula sa rainwater catchment system na. Madali namin itong naaccess upang gamiting panglinis o pandilig dahil konektado ito sa mga gripo. Ang tubig naman mula sa main line ay maitatabi namin para sa aming sterile operations,” she said. .

SCPW, UAPSA join hands with SM Prime in promoting wetland conservation

On the occasion of the 2023 International Day for Biological Diversity, SM Prime Holdings Inc. (SM Prime) participated in conjunction with the Society for the Conservation of Philippine Wetlands, Inc. (SCPW), in presenting the fourth SCPW Wetland Center Design Symposium. The event took place on May 29th, within the premises of the MAAX Building situated in the Mall of Asia Complex.

Notable experts in the field also graced the event, sharing their insights and experiences including Chris Rostron, the global manager of Wetland Link International, and Alex Hughes of Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust in London, UK. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in conjunction with SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime), a prominent real estate developer in Southeast Asia, has urged local public officials to abstain from the extraction of groundwater. Instead, they are advocating for a shift towards rainwater collection methods, promoting recycling and impoundment. Furthermore, officials are being encouraged to delve into innovative technologies like modular desalination and modular sewage treatment facilities. These measures aim to effectively address the impact of climate change on the nation's water resources.

During the recent "Towards a Greener Footprint" multi-stakeholder symposium held in Iloilo City, Environment Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga presented a series of solution-oriented directives aimed at aiding the local government in curbing their carbon footprint. Notably, Yulo-Loyzaga underscored the significance of water preservation as a pivotal measure to tackle the impending water scarcity while concurrently enhancing the populace's availability to secure water sources and sanitation facilities.

At the multi-stakeholder forum, "Towards a Greener Footprint", in Iloilo City recently, Environment Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga shared solutions-focused guidelines to help the local government reduce carbon footprint, with emphasis on water conservation to address the looming water crisis and increase access to safe water and sanitation. “We need to invest in the appropriate engineering and infrastructure to deliver water from the source,” Secretary Loyzaga said. “We must avoid, if not reduce drastically, the extraction of groundwater which in low-lying coastal areas causes subsidence and increases flooding.”

“Rainwater catchments will not only provide additional supply for household use but will also help ensure the availability of surface water through the maintenance of watershed cover when impounded,” Secretary Loyzaga said.

Based on the latest report of the Philippine Statistics Authority, water abstracted for own use increased from 215.2 billion cubic meters (bcm) in 2020 to 217.8 bcm in 2021 countrywide. From 2010 to 2021, the largest amount of self-abstracted water is for the power sector (58.7%). This was followed by agriculture (33.5%); mining and quarrying, manufacturing, and construction (5.3%); and services sector and households (2.6%).

Earlier this month, the DENR said the country still has enough water supply, but proper management is needed to prevent a possible water crisis by the end of the year.

The call was met with a resounding response from the private sector, particularly, SM Prime. In the same forum, SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance Engr. Liza B. Silerio shared how SM Prime has stepped up the sustainability programs that it has been doing since SM Supermalls started recycling water in the 1990s.

From rainwater catchment to help deter flooding in communities where its malls are located, SM Prime also pioneered the mall-based rainwater filtration system that converts the collected rainwater to be potable enough for washing, cleaning and even drinking. Launched at SM City Baguio, the facility will supply mall tenants with enough potable water to help reduce sourcing from the communities’ water table.

“As an integrated property developer, we have seen the first-hand effects of natural hazards that are caused by the change in weather patterns in the Philippines,” Engr. Silerio explained. “El Nino and La Nina are two phenomena resulting from climate change. Our country ranks number one in the World Risk Index 2022 report as the most vulnerable among 193 nations.”

Faced with this challenge, Engr. Silerio shared that SM Prime will continue to find innovative ways to address the climate challenges. “We continue to evolve and adapt technology to improve our resource consumption as part of our climate action,” she concluded.

Intricate storytelling

When Direk FM first heard the story of “Nag-aapoy na Damdamin” he was immediately enticed by the depth and the burning emotions of its characters.

He shared, “Nung invited ako to direct, sabi ko confident ako dahil sobrang attracted ako sa kwento. From different perspectives ikukuwento yung pangyayari at iba-iba yung kakalabasan. Ang intricate at delicate ng storytelling ng JRB Creative Production so pagkabasa ko excited ako at alam ko na kailangan nito ng matinghas na pag-aaral.”

Experimenting with male perspectives

Aside from showcasing female perspectives on the show, Direk FM also puts the spotlight on male protagonists to accommodate the changing habits of viewers. Evidently, JC and Tony who play Philip and Lucas respectively earned praise for their effective portrayal of masculine figures.

“Even before the pandemic nababago na ang point of view ng mga manonood. Mas marami dati ang nanay sa bahay and the statistics are showing that there are more househusbands now and so the flavor for theme hindi na lang naco-concentrate sa female centered stories kundi naghahanap na rin ng strong masculine stories. We are also taking the perspective of the male protagonists in the show. You might call it experimental kasi kung sanay na yung manonood na ganoon na ang sensibility kaya that is something quite new na we are offering,” said Direk FM.

Getting to the character’s core

He might be strict but Direk FM certainly knows how to encourage artists to be the best version of themselves when portraying their character.

He said, "Kapag binasa nila yung script and from what they have deduced out of it, I ask them, 'What do you think drives your character? What is the core?' Incidentally, ang lalim ng kwento, ang hirap ipaliwanag, hindi pwedeng hindi ka mag-aral, susuriin nila yung kalolooban nila kasi ang basehan ko lang palagi ay truth in performance and you get to see if the eyes are lying, if it’s not convincing enough. In that process, you’re not just a director para ka na rin psychologist, para ka rin retreat master."

Elevating the quality

The pandemic has greatly affected how viewers consume content, not to mention the numerous platforms offering various forms of entertainment in just a few clicks. Direk FM noted that these changes challenged them to produce a drama series that can elevate the quality of local TV shows.

"Watching shows has changed a lot during the pandemic. Nagiging mas mataas yung level of appreciation ng mga manonood so nagiging mahirap sa artists pati na rin sa mga nasa likod ng camera. We have to keep up with the time asking of us, the demand for making better shows," he said.

ALOHA's Equation for Brainpower, Hello to Mental Math Magic

One of my dream destination is Hawaii, but my recent event is not about beach and big waves. It’s all about numbers, abacus and problem solving. Yes, you read it right it involves figures and mathematics. Though its name is ALOHA it does not basically says hello but instead it stands for Abacus Learning of Higher Arithmetic. It may not literary means hello but it’s hello to the world of numbers.

Me, together with some other bloggers were invited for the media conference of ALOHA Mental Arithmetic. It is one of the learning centers established here in the Philippines earlier before the pandemic.

According to its Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Ivy Sato, ALOHA acquired their license in 2018 and started their growth. Unfortunately, the pandemic happened and some of their branches were unable to continue. Only a few managed to stand the struggle.

What is ALOHA?

ALOHA is a brain development program that is created and specifically designed for children ages 4 to 13. The founder, Mr. Loh Mun Sung, founded, adapted and developed this concept in 1993. It is based on the Abacus Computational methods from China and Taiwan. The program was initially introduced in Malaysia and gained popularity that leads to its expansion to other countries.

As it was presented during the media conference, ALOHA offers a comprehensive curriculum that focuses on enhancing a child’s mental arithmetic skills and overall brain development. It provides training that enables children to perform calculations swiftly and accurately without relying on external tools such as calculators, computers, or other gadgets. The program utilizes specific teaching methods to help children improve their ability to solve math problems using their mental abilities, regardless of the complexity of the numbers involved.

As proof of the effectivity of the program is the success of its students who participated in the ALOHA Mental Arithmetic International Competition at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last July 30. The participants, Darylyn Faith Fabilane, 11 years old from Fizal, and Rheana Yasmin Campos, 10 years old from Caloocan won as the grand champions of the competition out of 700 students from different countries like Bangladesh, Croatia, China, Canada, Cambodia, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Panama, taiwan, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Venezuela, and the Philippines. Also jake Conner Yao, 9 years old from San Juan City was crowned Champion while Ryan Warren Merdegia, 9 years old from Pampanga, brought home the second runner-up title.
v At the media conference, Rheana Yasmin Campos made an appearance and gave a little demonstration together with her coach of how they compute simple and complex numbers by using the abacus and mental computation.

ALOHA Mental Arithmetic is not just about mathematical skills but it is also about targeting the child’s IQ (intelligence quotients) and EQ (emotional quotient). The program aims to assist children in completing their homework more efficiently, developing exceptional mental calculation skills, improving problem-solving abilities, enhancing their capacity to remember information and visualizing conceptual maps in their minds. With this, and by engaging in ALOHA, children can strengthen their cognitive abilities and build more confidence in their math skills, alleviating their Math Anxiety.

Why ALOHA?

Here are 5 things to know about ALOHA that parents can consider.

World Reference. ALOHA has catered to more than 4 million students in more than 40 countries since its establishment in 1993 up to today.

Quality Material. The teaching material used in ALOHA is designed, revised, and updated constantly by a group of experts in the educational field.

Competitions. ALHOA prepares the students to demonstrate their regional, national, and international skills, solving 70 operations in 5 minutes.

What are the Programs of ALOHA

During the media conference, Ms. Sato, shared the different programs of ALOHA. Accordingly, all programs are created for each age bracket and the category or level of learning. It is also shared that all students must course through the ladder of learning.

So, here are the programs that ALOHA offers. The first program, Kinder Tiny Tots, is designed for children ages 4-5 years old and consists of two levels. The second program, Tiny Tots, is for children ages 5-7 years old and encompasses ten levels. The last program is the Kids program, which is intended for students ages 8-13 years old and comprises of eight levels.

Ms. Sato, said that the recent competition shows that young Filipinos can unlock their full potential and make a significant impact in the global arena as long as they are given adequate support back home.

Support, training, and guidance are the aspects needed for a successful student, most especially in the field where most of us less like it, Math.
