CHILD Haus celebrates 21 years, Tears from Heaven

11/05/2023 11:28:00 AM

The SM Mall of Asia Music Hall hosted the 21st-anniversary party of CHILD Haus, a special place created by 'Mader' Ricky Reyes to give hope to kids with cancer. Over the years, the Sy family has been a big supporter of this place. In the beginning, it was Henry 'Tatang' Sy, Sr., and in recent years, Hans Sy, the Chairman of the Executive Committee at SM Prime Holdings Inc., has carried on the tradition started by his father.

At the forefront of the event were Mr. Sy and 'Mader' Ricky, and they invited several people and businesses who have supported CHILD Haus over the years. Many kids who have found a home at CHILD Haus were also there. The media covered the event, acknowledging the significant impact places like CHILD Haus have on children and their parents, often being their much-needed support.

During the event, they showcased three stories from CHILD Haus, featuring Aya, Laura, and Jessa in video clips. These videos were all about spreading hope and showing the life-saving efforts of the organization. Even the most experienced photographers in the press couldn't hold back tears, and it was truly amazing to see their emotional reactions. This shows just how deeply these stories touched everyone in the audience.

After ‘Mader’ Ricky's heartwarming welcome, Mr. Sy himself took the stage to present plaques of appreciation to the many friends of CHILD Haus whose generous donations have made the organization's life-saving work possible.

Those suffering from cancer and ‘adopted’ are provided food and shelter. There are presently two CHILD Haus locations - one in Manila, near the Philippine General Hospital, and one in Quezon City. Until the children are declared cancer-free and/or have completed their treatments and medical procedures, one child and one parent are allowed to live at CHILD Haus. If it’s an infant, both parents can stay.

A longtime supporter and regular visitor to CHILD Haus, Karylle, led the children in a rousing song composed by Karylle’s husband, Yael Yuzon. Then ‘Mader’ Ricky’s daughter sang a rendition of Florante’s ‘Handog’ that had been reworded to fit the sentiments of the children at CHILD Haus. These were two songs that the children had learnt and practiced as a “thank you” to the many guests who have helped make the ‘haus’ a reality.

In the end, both ‘Mader’ Ricky and Mr. Sy acknowledged the significance of this event, which commemorates 21 years of compassion, fortitude, and the spirit of giving and sharing.

SM Prime & WWF-Philippines Unite for Future Sustainability Champs

11/05/2023 10:16:00 AM

In a joint effort to prepare young student leaders for the vital task of safeguarding the environment in the future, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime) and World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines (WWF-Philippines) have unveiled the "YOUth are the Future" leadership program. This initiative focuses on educating and empowering the youth about environmental conservation, climate change, and sustainability concerns.

“There is no better time than now to educate the youth. As stewards of the planet, it is important that they have an opportunity to learn about environmental conservation, encourage them tovoice out their fresh ideas, and share new perspectives,” said WWF-Philippines Education for Sustainable Development Project Head Dino Calderon.

“When we provide our young student leaders with learning opportunities and expose them to practical solutions, we have a chance to help them design a sustainable future. We are committed to make sure that things change for the better,” says Hans “Chico” Sy, President of SM Engineering Design and Development Corporation (SMEDD) and SM sustainability champion.

Starting with a grand event on October 10, 2023, student ambassadors from different high schools in Metro Manila embarked on a guided tour of the SM Mall of Asia Complex. The tour highlighted SM Prime's sustainability initiatives and disaster preparedness practices. The official introduction of the "YOUth are the Future" Ambassadors took place at the SMX Convention Center, accompanied by a pinning ceremony. This significant gathering saw the participation of leaders and delegates from SM Prime, WWF-Philippines, government bodies, and foreign dignitaries.

In a message she delivered during the event, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga said, “Our journey is really about the race to resilience, as our climate changes, society is changing. Sustainability is our pathway to survival as a planet and that is what resilience is really about, the ability to withstand the impacts of the hazards that we know and those that we could face in the future.”

The youth ambassadors will participate in a three-day eco-camp at the Pico De Loro Beach and Country Club in November, where they will learn about waste and energy management, resource optimization, and climate mitigation and adaptation strategies from some of the country’s experts.

Renowned for its role in Olive Ridley Sea Turtle conservation, the 3-day eco camp in Hamilo Coast also serves as an immersive natural classroom in environmental conservation. The expected output from the eco-camp is a Green Manifesto that outlines their plans to effect change and a storybook module co-authored by all the participants. The program will culminate through a series of mall and school tours throughout Metro Manila to boost youth engagement and student ambassador recruitment.

In a message sent by her excellency Vice President and Department of Education Secretary Sara Z. Duterte, she said, “This visionary program embodies the transformative power of education and empowerment in shaping a more sustainable and resilient future. Taking advantage of this program will give you all a head start on becoming influential figures in creating a more sustainable and ecologically aware culture”.

Together with its partners, WWF-Philippines hopes to empower young Filipinos further to become the next generation of sustainability champions. Programs like YOUth are the Future, can help future generations become proactive leaders who can #ChangeTheEnding for the planet.

SM Foundation's 2nd Rainwater Harvesting System Expands Sustainability

11/05/2023 09:55:00 AM

Rainwater harvesting means collecting and saving rainwater for later. It's a good way to save water and not depend too much on regular water sources. Many old civilizations used it, and today, smart groups use it for eco-friendly water management.

SM Foundation, Inc., a part of the SM group focused on doing good for the community, has started using rainwater harvesting in two health centers they fixed up. They did this in Brgy. Irawan Birthing Facility in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, and San Fernando, Cebu Primary Health Care Facility.

Health workers in San Fernando, Cebu Primary Healthcare Facility water the locally sourced plants using the water from the rainwater harvesting system

SMFI’s Health and Medical Programs proactively implemented this innovation to help sustain the health of the local community while preserving the environment.

Ready in times of emergency

Dr. Alfredo P. Manugas VI, Municipal Health Officer and Health Department Head of San Fernando, Cebu Primary Health Care Facility, said that while water is crucial to their operations, water supply is not always available in their municipality, even their center.

“The rainwater harvesting system is essential in our health facility because the water supply in our municipality is not available 24/7,” he said. “We are now provided a source of water in times of emergency or any interruption of water supply. Our staff and visitors can use rainwater for cleaning, flushing the toilet bowls, and watering the plants.”

SMFI Health and Medical Programs senior project manager Albert Uy runs through how the system functions.

SMFI ensures that the facility is convenient and manageable to maximize its purpose. It operates without electricity, increasing its sustainability. To harvest water for non-potable use, it collects rainwater from the roof and gutter. The water is filtered through vinyl-coated mesh filters to ensure its quality before being stored in the 800-liter storage tank.

To guide users for safe recycled water use, all faucets connected to the facility have visible labels. Alongside this innovation, SMFI also used air-cleaning paints, LED lighting fixtures and appliances, and locally sourced plants to create a clean and comfortable environment for patients and health workers.

These green innovations exemplify the SM group’s commitment to the environment and community health within the broader context of the SM Green Movement. With the social good impact of the two rainwater harvesting systems, SMFI targets to replicate this initiative in other health centers in its pipeline, further improving water security in the face of challenges.

Realizing the Spooky Origins and Evolution of Halloween

10/30/2023 11:02:00 PM

The historian in me just kicked-in. So, here's my short article about the origins and evolution of Halloween. Crafted to make the living enjoy life this Halloween.

Halloween, celebrated on October 31st, is a time when people across the world embrace the spooky and supernatural. But where did this eerie holiday come from, and how did it evolve into the modern celebration we know today? Let's explore the fascinating history of Halloween, its ancient roots, and how it has found a place even in countries like the Philippines, predominantly Christian.

A Glimpse into History:
Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that on the night of October 31st, the boundary between the living and the dead blurred, allowing spirits to return to Earth. To ward off these wandering souls, people would light bonfires and wear costumes.

Christian Influence:
As Christianity spread, November 1st became All Saints' Day, a day to honor saints and martyrs. The night before All Saints' Day became known as All Hallows' Eve, eventually shortened to Halloween. It integrated some of the Samhain traditions, such as costumes and the belief in supernatural beings.

Here are some of the traditions or activities up right before November 1.

Five Spine-Tingling Halloween Traditions:

  1. Jack-O'-Lanterns: Carving pumpkins into scary faces or intricate designs is a Halloween tradition that originated from the Irish legend of Stingy Jack.
  2. Trick-or-Treating: The custom of children going door-to-door for candy can be traced back to a practice called "souling" in medieval Europe. In the Philippines, some call it "Nangangaluluwa."
  3. Costumes: Dressing up as witches, ghosts, and monsters is a nod to the Celtic belief in warding off spirits with disguises.
  4. Haunted Houses: The idea of creating spooky, haunted attractions during Halloween started in the United States. In the Philippines you can check out the known places in Baguio City.
  5. Apple Bobbing: An old tradition that dates back to Roman times, where young people would try to bite apples floating in water without using their hands.

Halloween in the Philippines:
The Philippines, a predominantly Christian country, has managed to embrace Halloween while maintaining its Christian values. Filipinos often participate in Halloween traditions, such as costume parties and trick-or-treating. Still, they add a unique twist by incorporating religious elements, like All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, which follow immediately after Halloween.

Families visit cemeteries to clean and decorate the graves of their loved ones, light candles, and offer prayers. In this way, they combine the spooky fun of Halloween with the remembrance of the departed, blending both ancient and Christian customs.

In totality, Halloween has a rich history, stemming from ancient Celtic beliefs and evolving through the influence of Christianity. Today, it's celebrated worldwide in various ways, even in countries like the Philippines, where Christian traditions harmonize with the spooky spirit of Halloween. So, whether you're carving pumpkins, dressing up in costumes, or simply enjoying some tasty treats, Halloween offers something for everyone to enjoy and remember the past, both the living and the departed. So this coming All Hollow's Eve, Happy Halloween!

Parañaque City's Telemedicine Success: A Model of Public-Private Partnership in Health

10/18/2023 09:18:00 PM

In a remarkable display of collaboration between public and private entities, SeeYouDoc (MA) Analytics recently hosted an event where Barangay Health workers and Doctors from 16 Barangays in Parañaque City shared their experiences in utilizing telemedicine. This innovative approach to healthcare delivery has not only proven its effectiveness but has become a beacon of success in the post-pandemic era, showcasing the power of cooperation in advancing health services.

The event, attended by representatives from WHO Philippines, highlighted the significant strides Parañaque City has made in promoting health and ensuring access to quality services. Dr. John Juliard Go, the National Professional Officer of WHO Philippines, commended the pilot barangays in Parañaque for their dedication to leveraging technology to enhance healthcare.

"I see we are blessed and happy; our pilot barangays in Parañaque certainly have done a lot in the past few years," remarked Dr. Go. He emphasized the pivotal role telemedicine played during the pandemic and stressed the importance of its continued use. Dr. Go underscored the need for trust, regulatory guidance, and equitable access, stating, "This is not just for the privileged and must be supported with adequate resources to institutionalize it. This is important for universal healthcare."

Dr. Olga Virtusio, the City Health Officer for Parañaque City Health Office, expressed her gratitude to the various stakeholders involved in the successful implementation of telemedicine. She playfully remarked, "Sitting beside Dr. Jojo is a little fun," acknowledging the collaborative effort that made the telemedicine initiative possible.

With a population of 704,904, Parañaque has achieved notable health milestones in the last five years, including a decrease in infant mortality rates, improvements in vaccination coverage, and an increase in consultation rates. The city has also provided 683 teleconsultations and continues to offer SeeYouDoc appointments, particularly to new and male patients. Infrastructure support, including the delivery of ICT equipment and internet facilities, has significantly enhanced the capabilities of Health Centers in the city.

Despite these achievements, Parañaque City faces challenges such as budget constraints, the need for additional health equipment, a demand for young health workers, transportation issues, and varying medicine requirements. However, the city's dedication to overcoming these obstacles underscores the commitment to inclusive healthcare.

The success in Parañaque City serves as a testament to the power of collaboration between public and private institutions. The seamless integration of telemedicine has not only improved health service delivery but also holds the promise of expanding universal health coverage across the city and, hopefully, to other parts of the country. With guidelines and procedures in place, Filipinos stand to benefit significantly in health management, logistics, and community support. The Parañaque model demonstrates that the future of healthcare lies in cooperation, innovation, and a shared commitment to leaving no one behind.

Dynamic Duo: Kathryn & Min Bernardo, AIA Philippines' Newest Brand Ambassadors

10/18/2023 05:26:00 AM

AIA Philippines, the leading life insurance company in the country, has just revealed that popular actress Kathryn Bernardo and her mother, Min, have joined the company as brand ambassadors.

Kathryn and Min Bernardo were officially introduced to the public through a reveal in the company’s social media assets, giving AIA followers a first peek into Kathryn and Min’s very special vlog.

The mother and daughter duo gave viewers a glimpse of their personal lives, which have not been previously shared publicly. They stopped by a local ube halaya vendor which made Min reminisce her pregnancy with Kathryn. “Not sure kung alam ninyo ito—kaya ganyan yung skin ni Kath ay dahil pinaglihi ko sya sa ube!” revealed Min. Min also shared their regular after school trips to the bookstore, where Kathryn asked her Mama to buy little trinkets, which she indulged as gift giving is one of her love languages.

Coincidentally, Min was once a Cabanatuan-based financial advisor of AIA Philippines—a decision she made after experiencing a life-changing event which prompted her to protect her family with life insurance, and finally say yes to becoming a financial advisor. “Out of that bad experience came something good. Kumuha ako agad ng life insurance. Then it became a career. Nagtatop ako sa branch namin at the same time, nakakatulong ako sa ibang tao. Natulungan ko sila to understand kung ano ang life insurance at kung gaano ka important ito,” Min shared. The experience made Min an ideal person to encourage people to get the protection they need so they can enjoy a secure future no matter what happens.

Min’s short-lived career with AIA Philippines allowed her to better contribute to the family, and help her clients become worry-free with the protection products she was able to offer them. In her one year as an advisor, she became a member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT), a select group of financial advisors who are considered at the top of their field. Unfortunately, she could no longer continue after a few years, with Kathryn’s career starting to flourish in Manila.

Kathryn and Min Bernardo are great examples of how AIA Philippines has been instrumental in helping families save lives and protect dreams, despite untoward life events. This is why Kathryn and Min are the perfect duo to represent how AIA Philippines can help Filipinos.

“We at AIA Philippines are excited to welcome Kathryn and Min Bernardo to the AIA family. Through them, we will be able to reach more people and communicate the importance of our mission of racing against risk to protect every Filipino family and empower them to live healthier, longer, better lives,” said Kelvin Ang, AIA Philippines CEO. “As someone who has first-hand account of what happens to a family who was not protected, I can’t stress enough the value of life insurance as an expression of love to those who matter most to us—our families. And Min has experienced it too. This understanding of our mission makes Kathryn and Min the best people to help us spread the word on how love can be better said with AIA.”

Kathryn and Min Bernardo join other influential figures in the Philippines—Gary Valenciano, Solenn Heussaff, Nico Bolzico, and Wil Dasovich—as AIA Philippines ambassadors, individuals who help bring to life its brand Purpose of helping people live healthier, longer, better lives.
