Yeng Versions Live! An OPM Tribute

8:16:00 PM

I have always liked how Yeng Constantino rocks everyone with her rock star personality.  I have liked her performances even during her stay in PDA.  Now this Rockoustic Princess launches her fourth solo album and her first-ever live music compilation titled “Yeng Versions Live!”

This compilation is released under Star Records.  Yeng’s latest album includes songs that she personally hand-picked.  In her desire to pay tribute to her great musical influences like Eraserheads, Apo Hiking Society and Rey Valera; she chose all-Filipino hits close to her heart as a singer and songwriter.

Recorded live in Teatrino Promenade in Greenhills, “Yeng Versions Live!” track list includes: “Alapaap” (composed by Ely Buendia of Eraserheads), “Mahirap Magmahal ng Soyta ng Iba” (composed by Jim Paredes of the Apo Hiking Society), “Paniwalaan Mo” (composed by Cecille Azarcon-Inocente), “Kahapon Lamang” (composed by Westdon Abay), “Banal Na Aso, Santong Kabayo” (composed by Westdon Abay) and a medley of two of Yeng’s signature compositions, “Hawak Kamay” and “Salamat”.

After her all-original album entitled “Lapit” which she collaborated with Raimund Marasigan as the album producer, Yeng’s “Yeng Versions Live!” is an another collaboration with another OPM music icon Jack Rufo, former lead guitarist of the 90’s band Neocolours.

Open your ears!  Get ready to rock and roll with Yeng’s live renditions of classic OPM hits in “Yeng Versions Live!” now available on your favorite record bars nationwide.  The songs can also be downloaded online via www.starrecords.ph

My 2nd SM Master Chef Event

11:51:00 AM

Gladly I was invited again to witness another food magic of the SM Master Chefs.  It was in the same place in SM Clark, same event, same time, but this time it’s a different chef.  Yes, it is a different chef and different brand that will showcase their cuisine and menu.

For this leg of event the brand that was presented was the San Miguel Food products and the Chef that demonstrated the dish was none other than Chef Jonathan Chua who’s a graduate of Hotel Restaurant and Institutional Management in De La Salle College of St. Benilde.  He also has an Associate Degree for Culinary Arts and Baking and Pastry in California Culinary Academy, USA.  So basically Chef Chua is a top-notch chef.  At present he is the Product Applications Specialist in San Miguel Purefoods Culinary Center.

Chef Chua has prepared four dishes for us, the Chicken and Mushroom Baked Rice, Star Ranchero Rice, Cheesy Hotdog and Fries Sandwich Overload, and Peaches and Cream Caramel Trifle.  All of these were easily made and prepared, some of which doesn’t require much cooking but all of them are quite interesting to eat and it I could say that it is intended for the kids.  Kids will surely enjoy these menus.

Foods are really great and on these menus, Chef Chua showed that leftover’s are still edible we just need a little bit of magic and innovations.

PressCon of the PRAYBEYT BENJAMIN

4:57:00 AM

Last September 28, 2011, after the surging winds and rain of Typhoon Pedring, we were able to attend the Press Conference of Vice Ganda’s newest and up-coming movie entitled PRAYBEYT BENJAMIN. The theme of the press conference was green and army.

It was a star studded press conference and also well formed cast by generation. This is what we have noticed there were the generation of the bachelor - Kean Cipriano and Carlos Agassi, the generation of bachelorette - Vice Ganda, the generation of young parents - Nikki Valdez and DJ Durano, the generation of matured parents - Malou De Guzman, and the last generation, the generation of the senior citizen – the honorable Director Eddie Garcia. I think Direk Wenn have created a cast of great actors of all generations to bring one heck of a good movie.

During the press conference there were many parts of the movie that were given emphasis. One of them is the acceptance issue not only in the gender issue but more precisely as an individual. There were also admission, like in the famous phrase “the truth shall set you free” and I think those who have admitted some events in their life surely set themselves free. So mainly the movie is not just laughs but it features pigments of reality, reality that is actually happening in our society.

As we all know Vice Ganda has become a very popular gay icon, from being a stand-up comedian up to becoming a product endorser, a host and a performer. Vice Ganda has been shining very bright and now it will shine much brighter with his latest upcoming movie “PRAYBEYT BEJAMIN”.

In this movie Vice plays the role of Bejamin Santos whose family has a long tradition of serving in the military. In fact, the movie’s stunning opening traces the roots of the Santos’ military service, from the days of Lapu-lapu and the Katipunan, up to the current times.

Conflict ensues when Lolo Benjamin which was played by Eddie Garcia fins out that his grandson (Vice) cannot continue the tradition because he is gay.

But when Lolo Benjamin is captured by terrorists, the grandson enters the military and musters all his masculine strength to save his dear grandfather, and the rest of the war-torn country as well.

Helping Praybeyt Benjamin in his quest are the member of a misfit platoon played by, among others, Derek Ramsay, DJ Durano, Vandolph, Jimmy Santos, Eddie Garcia, Dennis Padilla, Carlos Agassi, malouDe Guzman, Tutti Caringal, Kean Cipriano and Nikki Valdez.

This movie is the result of Vice’s good collaboration with the blockbuster director Wenn Deramas.

Be thrilled and be awed by Vice Ganda when “PRAYBEYT BENJAMIN’ opens in theaters nationwide on Oct. 12!

Blogger's Got A Taste of Benmore Four Casks Scotch Whisky

12:29:00 PM

After the launching event of BenMore where they’ve introduced their brand ambassador, Borgy Manotoc, they’ve organized an event exclusively for us, bloggers.  They wanted us to personally taste the flavor of BenMore Four Casks Scotch Whisky.

The venue for the blogger’s night event of Benmore was just right because it was the Wine Museum which shows instruments, pictures and materials used in wine making.  There were barrels and some squeezing instrument.  The right place for that kind of event.

As the program proceeds, BenMore was introduced more to us, bloggers.  There were some information that I have only known on that day like the “why whisky was return without an e?” some like that.   Also it was also elaborated how or what was the process of refining the BenMore Four Casks Scotch Whisky.  According to their presentation the Benmore Scotch’s course through four different types of oak casks in order for it to have a very much distinct tastes for the consumers and liquor drinking.  The four oaks casks were the Sherry Casks which create a richness that drinkers will savor, the Bourbon Casks which give the liquid just the perfect hint of woodiness, the Charred Casks which provide the ideal level of smoothness, and the Refill Casks which produce BenMore Four Casks signature complexity.

Aside from the BenMore 101 it was time for us bloggers to enjoy the taste.  But of course we were given drinking options so that we could enjoy the Scotch whisky in anyway that soothes our tastes.  Options were on the rocks, with water, with ice tea, tonic/ Soda or Cola.  We did try everything and had a fun tasting experience of all the offered options.  The only is that we should learn is that we should drink responsibly.

Also better watch out for their upcoming website www.benmoresctochwhisky.com.

Great Food at the Comida China de Manila

6:07:00 AM
One of our correspondent Jefferson Montas were able to get a taste of what Comida China de Manila offers. It was a delightfully tummy fillers according to Jefferson. Too bad he was just too conscious enough about his figure that he just tasted a right amount of servings.

So if you're looking for great Chinese cooking and taste just head on to the Comida China de Manila.

Here's an information about Comida China de Manila.

Filipino culture is richly embroidered with both Spanish and Chinese influences, with cuisine as the centerpiece attraction.

How the two cultures have blended perfectly in its host Filipino country is revealed in the names that Chinese dishes were called around the 1900s, with some names surviving through the present era.

Ever heard of Morisqueta Tostada? Pueco con Agreo Dulce? Camaron Rebosado, Ampalaya con Carne? All these Spanish sounding dishes are actually delicious, authentic Chinese food. Fried Rice, Sweet Sour Pork, Shrimps in Batter and Bitter Melon with Beef are what they are, respectively. And certified foodies of yesteryears did not go hunting for “Chinese Food” when they had food cravings or wanted to eat out with family and friends. They looked for “Comida China” (literally Chinese food in Spanish) which to old Manilans referred to that distinct style of panciteria fare in Binondo from the early 1900’s to the 1970’s.

Now, Panciteria San Jacinto – one of the favourite Chinese restaurants of Manilans in the pre-war and post-war era which has survived to this day – has changed its name to Comida China de Manila. Located along E. Rodriguez, Jr. Ave. (C5) in Pasig City, the present-day Panciteria San Jacinto is a favourite destination of Chinese food aficionados in the metro. Big Chinese families, Pinoy families on weekend feasts, regular foodies, office workers in the area and seekers of good Chinese food pay regular pilgrimages to the place to satisfy their palates. The lure of bountiful lauriats, all-time Chinese favourites and the discovery of new things on the menu (like dimsum and the unique, flavourful Comida China Soup) have lured them to Panciteria San Jacinto-Pasig since it opened in 1996.

Panciteria San Jacinto was one of the famous and favourite destinations for “comida china” since the pre-war years (it was first established in 1894), and we have been privileged to keep its legacy going through the years. We are happy to have revived the name and identity of the famous restaurant. We are also proud that we have taken its cuisine to new heights and made Panciteria San Jacinto’s comida china available to younger generations, thanks to our joint venture with its original owners,” explains Benny V. Torres, President of Comida China de Manila, Inc.

But Panciteria San Jacinto is only one of several Chinese restaurants that catered to old Manilans in that bygone era, Benny says. Only very few have survived to this day. In July this year, the Torres family, which runs Panciteria San Jacinto-Pasig and other restaurants like Mom and Tina’s and The Red Rickshaw Restaurant in Pampanga, decided to change the name of Panciteria San Jacinto to Comida China de Manila.

“We want to keep history alive and get younger generations in touch with the glorious past of Chinese restaurants along T. Pinpin street in Binondo, which by the way was originally named Calle San Jacinto. We chose Comida China de Manila as our new name because it is representative of all the panciterias of that era. Besides, the restaurant has evolved into something more than a panciteria. To begin with our Pasig branch, a full service 400-seater restaurant, is well appointed and comfortable. Our menu remains faithful to the classic Cantonese fare served in Binondo, complemented with new dishes put together by our Chief Cook who began his career in the very first Panciteria San Jacinto restaurant along T. Pinpin Street. The new name will also suit the vintage Manila look of our interiors, which is in the works.” Benny adds.

The Torres Family chose to take a different direction from the old panciteria concept of the Pasig restaurant by opting for a more formal and upscale ambience, says Benny, but the food at Comida China de Manila remains affordable to its clientele. Served in desired portions to match both pocket and appetite, old favourites and new fare are offered in poquito (half small or grazing portions), small, medium and large serving sizes.

Catering and in-house feasts are all still part of the Comida China de Manila offerings.

Younger generations who may not have even heard of the term “comida china” are suddenly discovering the charm of experiencing Chinese food with Spanish titles, observes Benny.

“It’s part of our mixed culture. The food itself and the names of the dishes are all part of our history. Perhaps through our new name we will be able to make younger generations become more aware and proud of our colourful past and the interwoven influences in our history,” he concludes.

The Kris of Justice

10:24:00 PM
Setting aside entertainment and foods, here's something to help an old classmate. Also this will be part of this blog's peace advocacy between Filipino Muslim and Christian. A series of understanding and learning.

Last July 23, 2011 they launched the book entitled "Kris of Justice" a novel written by Abdel Karim C. Tillah, a Filipino Muslim descendant of the Royal House of Tawi-Tawi.

Here are some excerpts from the Press Release

Image from the Press Release.
... “To come up with a peaceful and lasting solution to the never ending war between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Muslim rebels in Mindanao, we must first know the root cause of the conflict.” This was the statement issued by the the author Abdel Karim Cristobal Tillah during the launch of his novel last Saturday, July 23 at the UP School of Economics Auditorium. In partnership with the National Interfaith Consultative Committee (NICCOM) and the UP Institute of Islamic Studies, the launch was hosted by Mr. Chito Villegas. KRIS OF JUSTICE: The Story of the Greatest Race of Warriors the Modern World Never Knew, written by Abdel Tillah is the first novel that tries to explore the root causes of the ages-old conflict between Muslims and Christians in Mindanao. “How can you expect the Philippine government to come up with a just solution to the problem when the majority of Filipinos and even the members of the govt. peace panel don’t know much about the history of Mindanao and the root causes of the conflict?”, the author, a Filipino Muslim descendant of the Royal House of Tawi-Tawi, born to a Muslim father and a Christian mother, said...
Image from the Press Release.

...“The Kris of Justice is the first novel that aims to educate Filipinos in an entertaining way on the glorious history of the Moros. It is presented in a concise, comic-book, graphic novel, or movie-script style that can be easily absorbed by a generation of Filipinos not used to reading, but used to watching TV and reading Facebook, Twitter and comic books,” Mr. Larry Henares writes.

“The dramatic flow of narration along the rhythm of the history of the Muslim armed struggle and the deep longing for peace and national unity adds a meaningful value to the Filipino Muslim literature as part of national heritage,” Prof. Samuel Tan adds.

The novel is the result of the author’s extensive studies on the story and history of the Muslims in the Philippines and his experience and insights into the practice of both Islam and Christianity. Abdel was exposed to interfaith activities at an early age, since his father is a founding member of the first interfaith committee established in the Philippines {and probably the first in the world) in 1973. In 1992, Abdel Tillah composed an interfaith song entitled “God of Abraham.” This song is contained in the CD that is included with the book.

In his review of the book, Mr. Boyette San Diego, writer and a top executive of a printing corporation, narrates, “I think the journey away from simplistic portrayals of Islam and the Mindanao conflict and stereotypes begins in Chapter 9 – “Islam, the Light of the Dark Ages.” There’s so much fascinating information in the chapter – e.g., advances in science; that the first university in the world was founded by a Muslim, and a woman at that; the premium Muslims give to education, etc. – that will stimulate study and understanding and prevent rushes to judgment… The putting in context of the Muslim situation continues and is deepened in Chapter 10, “Hidden History” and Chapter 12,“More Hidden History,” which weaves superb research and scholarship into the historical origins of the current state of affairs in Mindanao. The idea of colonialism and its motivations and tactics (such as divide and rule) are fleshed out and illuminated with historical examples.”

The publication is a very interesting and engaging reading material that will help the readers, especially the youth to have a better understanding and appreciation of the Muslim culture. It hopes to foster solidarity among the present and succeeding generations of Muslims and Christians, not only in the Philippines but also in other countries. The author strongly believes that only by bringing out the truth, can there be genuine understanding between peoples of two faiths resulting in better Christian-Muslim relations, peace in Mindanao and ultimately, lasting peace for the Philippines and the whole world...

To purchase a copy of the book “Kris of Justice” with the included CD for P350.00 visit www.krisofjustice.com or if you wish to contact Mr. Abdel Karim Tillah, you can email him at truthhorizon@yahoo.com or by phone: 09178962528.
